  • for those that say the sounds aren't accurate. the original broadcast are light years out but every time the spice girls, martin Luther king are broadcast they end up in space. so martin Luther kings broadcast near Jupiter is right, heck you could probably hear him from mars as itis being shown on telly somewhere now too. but your right the sounds in this clip are meant to be the original in which case the clip is wrong.

  • if there are aliens (if), they would have to make noise as well, maybe they won't have television but still a noisy planet which is a good thing like ours

  • we sure are a noisy planet!

  • @enchantress7 that's a good thing, shows this planet is thriving against the quite of space.

  • the BEST part of the whole movie

  • 0:40 Funkytown

  • The most advanced and modern scientific theories hold that our universe, incomprehensibly vast and ancient as it is, was created out of absolutely nothing billions of years ago, and has been rapidly expanding ever since. What caused the universe to spontaneously pop into existence and how long will it last?

  • How small do you feel after watching that?

  • @palakaman empty

  • The camera gliding through the universe recording history THANK GOD ALMIGHTY WE ARE FREE AT LAST

  • if you could dash off at the speed of light, and return to earth in only a couple of weeks, you'd never have to see nancy grace again....

  • This is art, not science.

  • personally i look at this as a reminder of how small we are in the universe, i know the songs and time lapses and all that aren't correct but can't we just appreciate it anyways?

  • message me if you want an intro

  • awesome movie

  • i love jodie...must shoot ronnie...i love jodie...must shoot ronnie...i love jodie......

  • beelions and beelions...

  • imagine how disappointed their gonna be if, if, if their cubs fans....

  • zombies exist

  • This was a great movie that didn't get the recognition it deserved.

  • Should have played the audio backwards for realism lol

  • @27Riverdale Perhaps, but the audience would not have gotten the point...

  • CAN ANYONE MAKE ME AN INTRO

  • this is for those that dont see space as we do, give it a break... i love concepts of space & how we were created, for instance start with the string theory have fun with that...

  • "and dr arroway here will be looking for, uh, um",......dr. arroway: "little green men"...

  • maybe this whole planet is just an electron in an atom.

  • @1skullduggery Electrons are fuzzy 'probability' objects. Planets, not so much...

  • HaHa! We as humans are puny in the Universe, funny.

  • The book is a billion times more accurate

  • ok its inaccurate but its a MOVIE and its amazing to see where we are in space

  • While it is somewhat inaccurate i do use this video as a way of trying to get people to understand just how big the universe is

  • Is anyone else disappointed that we won't ever get to understand the universe? It's pretty sad that we're still stuck on earth when 99.9999999999999999999999% (recurring) of existence is out there in space. I can guarantee that there are things out there that would blow your mind a million fold, but you will never get to witness or know of them. We're just like those people from the medieval times that never got to find out that the world was round, or that one day they might be able to fly.

  • @CrazyEurazion

In my opinion (and everyone is entitled to one), I disagree with the speculation of the movie, that if there is no one else out there then it's an aweful waste of space. Can't something exist purely for the sake of existing? I think that the great vastness of the universe serves the purpose that the Scriptures of the Hebrews tells us: to demonstrate to Mankind the greatness and wonder and power of God. And I'm content with that.

  • @hmghosthost yeah, i'd rather be left alone, anyway.

  • @CrazyEurazion good analogy, I completely agree that's it's sad that we will probably never see any of the wonders that are out there and also sad that the great majority of people on our speck in the universe don't care anyway. One bright spot on the horizon is that probably in 10 or 20 years virtual reality will be so immersive we'll be able to travel through the universe with all the sensation of actually being there!

  • To give the Universe justice: if this were to scale (and the humanity's radio sphere would last for 1 second), you'd have to listen to The Silence for almost 4.5 years!

  • This video always interests me because it explains real good how it take time for sound to travel and the further you go the older the music get since an object that starts in motion will stay in motion. It rminds me of a timeline since it just keeps adding on we could learn so much about space if we ever could discover a way how to travel faster than lightyears.

  • @MrScienceDiscoverer Is English your third language....

  • Granted, the radio waves are apparently overlaid to the visual a little slowly - but it definitely got a little creepy when it went silent...

  • the planets are conveniently aligned for this!

  • Such a good movie, such a terrible ending.

  • @balrogdude27 I agree. It totally went against everything that the book argued. I still watch the movie, but the ending is probably making sagan turn in his grave

  • FLOCK OF SEAGULLS!

  • @Shahablo Hell ya!

  • Although it looks nice, this doesn't seem very accurate. IIRC, we don't live inside a nebula, and we're also supposed to be more on the outskirts of the milky way.

The radio broadcasts also went back in time too fast. Alpha Centauri is abour 4 ly away, so they would start picking up "Umbrella" from Rihanna right about now. :-)

  • @Cihl280777 i agree, it was also a horrible representation of the eagle nebula

  • @Cihl280777

That was my first reaction as well, Hitlers famous line from the 36 Olympics would be like 75 light years away (or parts of it, anyway). That's quite a way out.

  • @Cihl280777

Indeed. I heard Spice Girls before the camera got to the moon, which is only a few light seconds away.

  • @Cihl280777 Interesting analysis. The first time I saw this I thought it not only placed things in the proper perspective, but that it was also somewhat moving, as something like this should be. But the idea of Alpha Centauri being able to pick up a radio signal of something broadcast just within the last few years...I'll have to investigate that. :-)

  • @Cihl280777 No it did not go back to fast.. those songs are still being rebroadcasted. They just happen to by chance pick up those specific rebroadcasted messages.

  • @Cihl280777 Well while the mmovie might not be as accurate, the original book said that "they" were on the star Vega, which is if I recall 26 light years away

  • @Cihl280777 I agree with you except for 1 thing. I don't think the movie try to show that the Earth lives inside the Eagle Nebula, but more like flying through it. The problem is that the Eagle Nebula is too close to the alpha centauri stars. It should be thousands of light years further away.

Another huge bummer is that the nebula isn't mirror imaged. In the video we see the nebula in the same way as we see it from earth. :D

  • @Cihl280777 Regardless, it accomplished its task of showing how small we are.

  • @Cihl280777 I still really like it. We saw this in our class in High school. (I already knew about this, that radio waves were traveling and whatnot) but it demonstrated to the class that concept. It's still really good to show how small but noisy we are in this little cosmic speck. Not arguing about your claims of unrealistic-ness, I completely agree with those. But still... lay back and let it not matter so much.

  • @Imaigner1 I agree. It is a movie, after all, and movies aren't supposed to be accurate. Movies are poetic.

  • @Cihl280777 Our solar system is about 2/3 of the way out from the galactic center,so this is about right.

No, we're not 'in' a nebula, but as we're looking back toward Earth the entire time, if you pick a direction toward one, you can travel backwards 'through' a nebula, just as a plane might fly through a cloud as you look out of its rear...

And the broadcasts indeed don't match the distances. See 'The Known Universe' video by AMNH.for a better display of the limits of that.

  • @Cihl280777

This is the Oort cloud. Don't you people learn things at school.

The Eagle Nebula later shown in the sequence is about 7000 light years away from us.

You are right, watch?v=0fKBhvDjuy0 is more accurate.

  • @Cihl280777 It does not depict that we live inside a nebula, rather it depicts that the camera moves though one while it zips away from Earth.

  • @Cihl280777 you sir, are a gentleman and a scholar!

  • @Cihl280777 If the movie were made now ;)

  • TO TAKE a great man's words: I marvel at how humble was the repository of all of our potential.

  • Así debería ser cuando morimos. It should be that way when we die.

  • WHY IS THE UNIVERSE SO BIG? WE ALL FIND OUT WHEN WE DIE. ISN'T THAT BEAUTIFUL?

  • @cantforgetyou Why when we die?

and please turn off the caps

  • @Hairysteed Sorry, what do you mean with, please turn off the caps? I'm from Holland.

  • @cantforgetyou Caps lock on your keyboard. Turn it off.

  • @Hairysteed Hello, who are you to say if I use the caps or not? Ha, ha, ha. You are funny. GOODBYE AND HAVE A NICE DAY.

  • yes we are a tiny speck but as we can see by the radio waves, our influence can spread to an 'absurdly' large distance.. and we humans learn how to write only about 7000 years ago, imagine what we can accomplish with 7000 years more.

  • @ZZzzzzzWhat You're deluding yourself: the speed (in video) is not constant ... at all.

  • @TheBlaiseM if you are trying to refer the speed/distance of the radio waves i know that it can be exaggerated on this video but if you see the distance from Earth to Mars its an 'absurdly' large distance and we have accomplished radio transmissions larger than that distance. Its not a delusion, its reality.

  • Every time I see this, it makes me feel empowered because all this every day nonsense becomes so insignificant and I know that I just have to do what I want to. Creating things like art, musik, thoughts, ideas!

  • We are such a tiny speck in the universe, running around like ants. I dont find this at all depressing, I find it gives me hope, as the universe is life-giving, so we cant be alone.

  • Makes you wonder why anyone should give a sh*t about other people. I mean, if the entire Earth was destroyed, and all the billions of people and trillions of organisms living on it ceased to exist, why would it matter? It's still just the slightest bit of dust in a huge universe that would continue as if nothing happened....

  • Is this the Andromeda galaxy together with the milky way at 2:37?

  • This made me depressed.

  • Watching this scene to my favorite band Muse's concert intro "We are the Universe" is the most awesome, chilling thing ever. The two were made to be played with each other. I mean really, its good: /watch?v=gznIJ-xdEvE

  • Not going to post a super-meaningful comment here.

Awesome damn intro. I forgot how cool it was until I saw it recently.

  • thats freaken crazy i feel like a freckle on the moon compared to this

  • I got bored and updated the intro.... watch?v=TtHWevz-8hQ

  • I feel like an atom

  • CQ! CQ! this is W9GFO! Come back?

  • saludos.. probando youtube

  • We are so extremely small compared to the whole universe, it doesnt even matter that we exist.

We ask our questions about the purpose of life and if there is there is other lfie out there.

Are we alone? Is there a god?

I think the only thing which can make us feel not alone in the universe, is the strong faith that we are not alone in the universe and that someone is asking the exact same questions about the meaning of life and the universe like we do.

  • @Itachi21x

I think the Alien (her father) in the movie points out our purpose of our exploration of the universe

"You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other."

  • In the beginning there was nothing...which then exploded!

  • @gh0s7walk3r

In the beginning there was nothing... and then something spoke... something that either created itself or always blah blah blah.

  • What is the structure revealed after the milkyway is revealed (the black and white sphere with a dark circle around it, seen at 2:48) I don't think it's a galaxy cluster because that structure is too uniform. Is it showing the theoretical multiverse?

    SOMEONE TELL ME!!!!!!

  • @xandermful i believe its another galaxy - an elliptical one like the messier 49

  • @xandermful

    Andromeda perhaps?

  • Watch the first two minutes and then pause the video after it zooms out of the Eagle Nebula (around 2:15 ) ...it feels like it's pulling you in. (it works quicker than 2 mins, but the longer you stay focused, the better the outcome)

  • This is arrogance's worst nightmare.

  • This is one of my favorite opening sequences in all of film.

I love how it represents the noise bubble that surrounds our planet and how that bubble eventually fades to a profound silence. Leaving the us to contemplate the vastness of the universe.

How easy it would be, to simply lose track of our home planet if humanity ever ventures beyond our solar system.

However, what is most remarkable is that humanity exists at all and is able to contemplate the universe and it's place in it.

  • For those who don't understand this beauty Islam is the answer.

  • 0:35 Dallas xDD

  • It's like we look at where we are on earth and we have everyday stuff where we exist in this huge-ass universe place

  • 40 people still believe we're the only living beings in the universe

  • this shows just how puny we really are and how we don't even matter. we're anything but at the center of the universe lol.

  • 1 of the greatest movies of all-time

  • i bealive that if jezus red youe comment he would lol at u firend.

  • GOD made this space:) you dont have to have proof... the PROOF is when you look up in the sky.. the proof is when you see your baby girl your girlfirend you in the mirror :)GOD wants as t bealive in him.. and some day he will come down as the bible says and not some idiot idiea of the space and how humans made.. how? from ground? maggots? lol its funny to even think of that.. so funny guys:) bealive and dont say wheres the proof.. proof is jezus all those places you see:) kiss youe girl.u see!

  • @747585aaa αν οι ανθρωποι σκεφτοντουσαν σαν εσενα ακομα σε σπηλιες θα ζουσαμε ταλιμπαν.

  • @747585aaa

That is what you believe - that man was made of dirt. So you can very well continue being that dirt. I am not. I live in real world, not in fairytale about talking snakes.

  • @747585aaa Ur a fuckin retard

  • Yeah Jodie Foster rocks this movie.

Darüber könnte man studnenlang nachdenken.. :o)

  • Love this opening! So great.

  • After watching this scene, I can finally say for a fact that we aren't the only technologically advanced beings out there. I wouldn't be surprised if there's another Earth-like planet with humans aboard. I didn't think I'd like this movie because it's older and I thought it would be cheesy, but it's epic! I enjoyed every moment of it. I admit I cried in this beginning scene. True beauty. It's a shame all the pollution Earth is going through. It'd be so much more beautiful than it already is.

  • to think that space is so big, it would take billions of years for even light to travel across the emptiness. makes you feel so insignificant. and to think it would be impossible to make it to our neighboring star in one lifetime with our current technologies.

  • perhaps the real proof that intelligent ET creatures do exist is the fact that they never tried to show themself to mankind. I too would have hidden myself If I had knew before the cruelties of which our race is capable.

  • We're going through so much during our lives on this little piece of dust floating in the universe.

  • For all teachers out there, this is a great resource to start students on relative sizes and distances lessons in astronomy unit. They will be amazed at how insignificant at the size of earth in comparison with other planets and stars. Students will come in thinking that planets and stars are smaller and not that far away. What we can see with the naked eye or telescope isn't that far away from them. So great way to introduce the topic

  • We and our stupid, selfish problmes are so unimportant.

    In real terms.

  • The purpose of the aliens is to show us, that in any moment of our lives, we are not alone and that when living in union and harmony, we can do great things and enjoy the greatness of existence fully.

  • jezzzzzzzzzzzzzz how does a man create such a piece of art

  • I find it so funny that people get so defensive about not being able to be convinced. There is nothing to be convinced about at this point but there is just as much possibility of a designer as the big bang simply because of your argument that no one has proved it but no one has disproven it.

  • That is really coool

  • watch?v=e7j5ArJJxjw&feature=mh_lolz&list=LLzl23GFV_ii8 can anyone check my intro ? I rly need Views rly fast !!!! Thank you very much !

  • This depresses me somehow.

  • @ltsmum3316

This means that you have the wrong attitude towards life.

  • @ltsmum3316 or is it just "Humbling" you? : )

  • OK, THIS is the way to use the special effects. Are you listening me hollywood?

  • OoOh awesome intro... looks like someone knows how to use google earth ;)

  • great intro, crappy ending. agree?

  • epic

  • I like this intro.

  • I remember watching this movie in Grade 10 and became an atheist a few months later. Great film.

  • @S0vereignty Thats stupid because there is a god or a higher power out there. Nothing just sprouts up out of nothing, Big Bang, Multiverses, ect whatever it is something did this. It's absolutely crazy to think other wise. Sure I don't buy the Bible stuff or what the pope says, but there is a higher intelligence or God out there.

  • @Nicklin30112 Prove it. And if something can't be created out of nothing, where did God come from? It's crazy to believe in something that has no evidence. Why do you believe in this god and not Zeus, or Apollo? There is no evidence of a higher power. We are alone, and that's all that there is to it.

  • @S0vereignty You're wrong... Nothing just comes from nothing. I can't explain it. No one can, but something or someone did all this. Set it all in motion. Im not gonna argue with atheist. Im not a hardcore catholic or christian, but even I have enough common sense and brains to realize that a higher intelligence did this. ASK all the top scientist like Kaku, ext they all say there is an intelligence.

  • @Nicklin30112 How am I wrong when you have brought forth no evidence of this so called creator? You can't explain it, because there is nothing to explain. There is plenty of evidence for the big bang. There is none for this "designer". For all you know, Santa Claus could have designed the Universe. Stop trying to convince me of something you have no evidence of. Almost all scientists believe in the big bang, and I'd rather take their word over some guy on YouTube with no proof.

  • @S0vereignty

I don't understand why this argument steams so much anger and hatred...I can tell you are very angry when someone mentions God to you. I myself am a novice scientist, a medical student to be exact, and I believe the more I delve into biology, chemistry, and physics that it proves the existence of God...something we cannot understand...and honestly I am quite baffled that life exists due to very complex biochemical reactions. There are many scientists that believe in God.

  • @GibsonUSA87 There is nothing you can do to help these types of people understand. They simply can not stand nor want to understand or phathom that there may be a creator greater then they are. They simply are to self absorbed & cant even bear the thought of a holy father of "their" vast universe. They will always quote how if Jesus is so good why does he let us suffer, failing to grasp that it is we who twist his writings & we who make ourselves suffer by our own hands & for our own greed.=(

  • @S0vereignty She had 1 Evidence :D

  • @S0vereignty Arguing with these people is stupid in the first place, man. While rational nonreligious types may lack absolute proof of the Big Bang, hyper religious types will never lack any evidence, because they're certain in the first place that a wizard did it.

  • @S0vereignty I agree with your statement in a sense that science to this day seems to have mathematical and philosophical superiority over the faithful..one thing i know is i stand in between, right on top of that fence, i believe in both, science and our capability to evolve and understand it the way we do,,and then again faith, and a higher dimension and bigger start to the big bang, a creation of the molecules that created the big bang,,its trippy, yet awesome to be human...

  • @S0vereignty

    you are the man!

  • @S0vereignty there's no scientific evidence that you exist either (show me a peer-reviewed report on your existence) you dolt. There are multiple clues to a designer in every science - physics, biology. As well as mystical experiences that are direct experiences of the transcendent other world (you need to talk to a few people who have had them - I have). why is it that people like you are so adamant in believing you are nothing but a meaningless arrangement off atoms ?

  • @MrAussieJules Are you fucking retarded? Of course there's evidence you and I exist. I can show you photographic and physical evidence of my existence, as well as scientific evidence for my DNA structure. If you're using that utterly ridiculous way of thinking, you can't prove anything, which in that case gives us license to believe in absolutely anything and claim it as fact. Your "direct experiences" are no different than the experiences of Muslims and Hindus who have told me the same thing.

  • @MrAussieJules And what makes your "special experiences" so valid anyways? I'm assuming you're a Christian, so why should you credit your "experiences" to your God, when there are millions of others who have had these apparent transcendent experiences and credited them to other Gods? You point out these "clues" and never list any of them. Why? Because deep down you know that you are a sorrily deluded old coot.

  • @MrAussieJules Who says that's meaningless. Buddy I think your grasp to life is a little skewed there. What's wrong with his beliefs apart from your own. There is no more proof that there is a god then there isn't. It's an equal balance and if you have faith then good for you but don't force your opinion :)

  • @MrAussieJules I think you are right in that science is too full of itself at times. I mean all it has to do is look at itself in a linear timeline and see that. This universe or whatever it is may never reveal all that it is and there are just too many accounts of spiritual experiences for anyone in their right mind to believe we are just material clumped together and that's it. I think we are too limited as humans currently to see beyond our physics but that could change in our future.

  • @S0vereignty ...for me (and myself personally)...i feel like its much easier to have that little chance that hey maybe there is a designer or creator and that i could be saved some day that just live my life like there is no purpose....but hey not trying to judge anyone just trying to show you the christian prospective......God bless

  • @TORNxBigxBro So you live your whole life on a hunch? That's not a whole lot of undying faith you have. Your religion is there "just in case", which means that if your religion is false, you wasted the only life you ever had worshiping something that didn't exist.

  • @S0vereignty no... u are not understanding my point...why not rather, not "just in case" im saying that because i don't think u would rattier but u would look at it from the just in case

  • @S0vereignty you know, "believe just in case" is not a stupid way to be, it's hedging destiny really. In fact, it has a name that comes from a famous mathematician who put forward the idea: pascal's wager

  • @S0vereignty Dude there are things more obvious then evidence..and more important..so just stick your head back up your ass where it belongs and suffocate in your bodily gasses k!! maybe next time you'll use your brain and keep your mouth out of this topic..i just hope your family members aren't around when you snap finding out all of the ET crap as you think of it is all fucking true to the core..The creator ? here's the evidence you've been searching for all you life YOUR SOUL FUCK TARD

  • @DerrickB82 How eloquent. I'm sorry your were born as a failed abortion, because it's obvious that you're retarded. Just because you're too stupid to realize that you're invisible sky daddy and your magic soul doesn't exist doesn't mean you need to make an ass out of yourself. It's obvious you're just an angry, uneducated little toad. Here's some words for you: "THERE IS NO SOUL" FUCKTARD. Your body is bunch of cells and chemicals, but it's obvious that you're too mentally ill to understand that

  • @S0vereignty

Chill out old chap, please. It's not that serious, really.

  • @S0vereignty your sir a grade A moron! scientist will make you beli
