when i try to put exponents on y equals for some reason it puts 2 parallel lines above and below the equation but it didnt used to and it is messing me up on some calculations . does anyone know how to fix this?
@knueven5150 There is nothing wrong with your calculator. It didn't do that before, but with new version of the calculator OS, it does. It is normal to do that now, so don't worry about it.
@sandrapick32 The TI-84 is not designed to solve most equations (you can do some). Your equation is actually very easy to solve by hand. I can show you in webcam, but I do charge for this.
@EggProds No need to guess. Calculator has ability to get intersection. Your method is not the best way to solve, since getting items to be viewed in window may be a problem.
LOL back in the early 80's in my math/computer class in Jr High, we used basic to write our math programs and its almost exacly like the TI does it. We realized that using a PC to do that kind of work was over kill. But we also wrote out graphic programs to show the graphs and vectors. The computer classes today is sitting the kids in front of Word and the Internet. Its so sad that today kids are prevented from learning real computing. Even teachers are getting dumber these days. Its so sad...
Not exactly, today, in higher math courses (Calculus and above), we primarily use the TI to get exact numbers, but first we learn it the old way (from what my college courses have done). Essentially we are learning how to use them as tools rather than a crutch to rely upon. When you're trying to figure out square roots and graphing those exact numbers a calculator comes in handy.
Sorry to be a nitpick, but there is no such thing as a "TI-84". There is only the TI-84 Plus, which is a direct upgrade of the TI-83 Plus (in fact, it's exactly the same thing, just with some updated specs).
@onpon4 Sorry to nitpick, but there isn't ONLY a "TI-84 Plus." There is also the "TI-84 Plus Silver Edition." I just say "TI-84" to refer to both models. By the way, there are actually OTHER TI-84 models, including a couple of special teacher models I am aware of (I use one of the teacher models).
@videomathtutor Well, I would call the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition a TI-84 Plus, since it's a small upgrade of the TI-84 Plus, but I wouldn't call either the TI-84 Plus or the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition a TI-84. The reason for this is the TI-84 Plus was an upgrade of the TI-83 Plus. There was never a TI-84 and hence, other TI-84 Plus Series calculators cannot technically be put in the base category "TI-84", which was what I meant.
@TomislavDugandzic Teacher model can connect to other A/V devices. You can get by without one, even if a teacher. I believe you can buy directly from Texas Instruments. Some school supply stores may have them. I recommend just getting a regular model (cheaper) and get the TI-SmartView software (buy from TI).
@videomathtutor Oh, I see. I tried to order the Smartview software from TI directly but their shopping software didn't allow me to enter Sweden as the receiving country. So I ended up placing an order with Amazon instead. Too bad they still live in the 20:th century though - I have to wait several days for the package to arrive instead of just getting the software as a download / key by email :|.
@SemperVinco It is the TI-SmartView. It is available to teachers (special exception made to me, since I am a pro math tutor) at the Texas Instrument's education website.
I went out and purchase a TI-84 Silver Edition to day. I watched your video and tried to complete this math problem you had for an esample, but kept coming up with the wrong anwer: 1....the question you had was (1v5+3-(2*3 2))/(20/4+2)=-2 I had to alter the question a little, but I you can figure out what qustion i'm writting about.
Dude thank you alot im going to algebra next year and when I got this caculator from my dad I did not know alot of the keys. But you helped so thank you.
@almas99 Sure, but it would take a LONG time to do and would involve many videos (which I have not made yet). I can tutor you using a webcam, but I charge for that.
I noticed that the fraction answers came out to be an improper fraction. Is there anyway to change it to a display a mixed number? I use mixed numbers for work and some improper fractions may take me a few minutes to convert.
I don't know if this is only a silver edition thing, but on my TI-84, I press ALPHA, Y=, (this is labeled "F1"), 3. This converts improper to mixed and vice versa.
The second page of the MODE menu also has setting for default display of fractions which I have set to mixed number form.
@chekeeze111 No, it is a program called TI SmartVIew. It is only available for teachers (with special exception for me, a pro tutor). I use version 1 in videos, since it is better for widescreen. Version 3.2 is better for 4:3 aspect monitors, but has terrible scripting capabilities (essentially useless for video making). Version 1 cannot update its internal calculator software to the most recent OS version. There are similar programs for some other TI calculators.
@videomathtutor Why is / would it be available only to teachers and not students? I just ordered a copy of the TI-Smartview software from Amazon, and they never asked me to provide any teacher credentials.
@TomislavDugandzic I was not aware Amazon sold it. If so, that's great! The "rules" set by TI in the past may have changed, and now allow all to buy. I don't know. I think this is great software, and I recommend all to get it. it is a great way for teachers to show math on a computer monitor, and a great way for students to print up their homework and reports using great looking graphics.
@videomathtutor Yes, this software can be really useful if people help each other through the internet. Even students can ask / answer a question in the form of a video, not just teachers. Also I'd like to thank you for making this particular video. It's been very helpful to me. Thanks!
@TomislavDugandzic Glad I could help. I hope to have other parts to series later this year (rather busy with other projects now). I will also be making lessons for other calculator models.
how do i put in the problem: ( 2x-4)(x^2-2x+6) also (5t^2-t-3)(3t^2+5t-1) I just baught this calculator and im CONFUSED just looking at it !!! HELP !!
@krsdanie It depends on what you want to do this those algebraic expressions. Graph them? Evaluate them for a specific value of x or t? Multiply them out (not possible on TI-84, normally). Using an APP called ZOOM Math 200 can help you do the last two, which is really neat. Sent me an email for link (I can get you a discount code if you buy it too!).
@TheSeitari The TI-84 cannot do this. Sorry. The TI-36 and TI-89 can, as can many Casio, Sharp and HP calculators. Sorry. You may be able to find a program online that can do this. Do an internet search.
Awesome video, I'll recommend it to my girlfriend.... she's pretty horrible with using this thing :P
Anyways, I have a question. What is that at 9:58, that you're doing on your computer? I'm looking for a way to be able to write and edit programs straight from my laptop without having to juggle between my calc and my laptop. Where'd you find it?
@TheQuestion8 That is called "SmartView" by Texas Instruments. It is version 1. There is a newer version out now, but I like the older one for making videos. Visit the Texas Instruments education site for more info. I highly recommend this software for teachers to use in the classroom!
I hope Part 2 will be short & condensed ~ it is quite a bit towatch 34 mintues when much of the content can be condensed. When we (students)come and watch - we hope that it will be precise and condensed. But bla...h....h.ing too much really distract students from learning.....
@Onebluemew I will cover graphing in Part 2 (not done yet). y^2 is not a function, so graphing it on calculator is a bit more complicated. You would graph its inverse relation which is +/- sqrt(x). In other words, graph Y1=sqrt(x) and Y2= - sqrt(x). Sorry I cannot get into more detail here. You can get private tutoring from me (for a fee) if you need more help.
@parth285 Fractions are easy. You just enter the numerator divided by the denominator, and enclose this in parentheses. For one-half, it would look like (1/2). Not too hard, hmm? :) You can convert decimals to fractions by entering the decimal, then going to MATH > Frac. For example:
Good video, but when I type a number and add the power to the number. And continue on with another number, the rest of the numbers of the problem stay up like exponents. I dont know to get it off the exponent. Any suggestions
@jorgeykami If the calculator is using the most recent operating system, you need to press the right arrow to get out of the exponent. If using older OS, you need to separate the exponent with a math symbol, like +, _, *, (, ). I hope this helps.
@seandelevany Use parentheses instead of square brackets. Also make sure you use the "(-)" button instead of "-" for the first negative you have there.
@mbeckproductions I assume you mean to transfer TI calculator programs? You are supposed to use TI Connect X for that. Go to TI web site to download. It should also be on the CD-ROM that comes along with the TI Connectivity Kit (USB Cable).
@anamorphoscope The TI has a built in solver. No app needed. You don't input it like you listed, but it works. I cover it in my "Solving Linear Equations" video. You may also look at the app for sale at the zoommath website. It has some nice features that prove useful to you. By the way, a calculator is suppose to help you get answers, not be used to do all your work for you.
silver edition is no diff between ti-84 plus. The onnly diff is a lil bit of memory which will never matter and that the silver comes with games . Buy the regular and ul save a ton of ccash
@anamorphoscope Well, it is also a bit faster. The memory CAN make a difference, depending on the number of APPS you want to use. Either model is fine and I recommend either one. To save money, just rent one at the graphtor website.
thank you It was so helpful. plz put the second one.I like it when you begin from first step but plz dont mention obvious points and go a little bit fast . I love your title
I kind of thought this would be more advanced, I already knew all of this stuff, but I guess it would be useful for people who don't know much about this calculator.
OMG!!! God bless you for doing this. I bought this expensive calculator and it just sat in my bookbag. NOW, I can actually use it, THANKS TO YOU, VIDEO MATH TUTOR!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Your explanations are making me feel confidence instead of intimidation!
I've always done things the old-fashioned paper/pencil way, but it is time to enter the 21st century LOL I hope you will post the sequel soon! Thank you so much!
I will cover graphing when I do Part 2 of this series. In the mean time, perhaps you can enclose both the numerator and denominator within parentheses. This should help.
OMG!! I LOVE YOU...I've needed someone to do this for soo long!. Thankyou for taking soo much time to explain everything. I'm borrowing one right now, but I'm getting the all pink one. It will be nice to know how to actually USE IT !
This is a great video! I wouldn't have been able to resist saying. "First put the batteries in, and turn on the calculator. If you can't get that one on the first try, you have no business doing these math problems."
TI calculators and their algebraic only entry logic are very tedious to use. Most real world engineers use HP calculators...why do you suppose that is?
Most HP calculators are RPN format, so they are easier to input data with less chance of error. Unfortunately, these calculators are also not very user friendly, and require a bit of a learning curve to use. I disagree that the TI calculators are "tedious" to use. They are actually the most user friendly calculators out there. They also get great support from TI, have both mac and PC software, and are updated frequently. HP cannot make those claims.
Well, I would agree there are some aspects of a TI that are more user friendly...But I would counter by claiming some aspects of an HP get the nod for user friendliness (the plot and numerical solver interfaces come to mind).
Anyway, I think you're doing a great service by putting these videos on the web, and from the comments I see, you are helping a lot of people. Keep up the good work.
I do not own the HP 50g, so I cannot give you an unbiassed opinion. If you are going to be an engineer or scientist, you are probably better off with the HP. Do be prepared for a large learning curve. I cannot help you learn how to use it. I do incorporate the TI-84 in most of my lessons. It is very straight forward and easy to use.
You will be better off getting the TI-84. I own over 30 calculators and have experimented with them all. I own the HP 49. Not very user friendly. The TI-84 is BY FAR the best. I even like it better than the new TI-nspire, which, while very powerful, also have a steep learning curve. The errors you (and others) tend to make is because you may not input the expression correctly. I cover all that in my lessons, to help you avoid mistakes. Another thing to keep in mind is that some teachers may...
I cannot spend TOO much time answering specific questions. That is why I am making the videos. Don't forget to watch my Basic Math videos for more help on using the TI-84 (and they are designed to be great reviews for those planning to take algebra!).
ok.. i watched for over 3 minutes and you've wasted that much time and haven't even opened the box yet. Please assume we already have one and it's already out of the box and we know how to put batteries in it. If we were retards, we wouldn't even care about a calculator like this.
I am not watching the rest of this video out of sheer frustration
Please respond to this, I dont have a disc, and I tried to download the software, but instead of it saying Open, it says Find, and I'll try to find, but it wont work.
This is like looking at an older version of myself. It's kinda creepy, actually. When confronted with a calculator problem my AP Physics teachers grabs the calculator, announces she'll fix it, then walks across the room, and hands it to me.
Is the Part 2 ti-84 video available?

@parth285 Fractions are easy. You just enter the numerator divided by the denominator, and enclose this in parentheses. For one-half, it would look like (1/2). Not too hard, hmm? :) You can convert decimals to fractions by entering the decimal, then going to MATH > Frac. For example:
.5 >Frac
1/2

Good video, but when I type a number and add the power to the number. And continue on with another number, the rest of the numbers of the problem stay up like exponents. I dont know to get it off the exponent. Any suggestions
jorgeykami 1 year ago
@jorgeykami If the calculator is using the most recent operating system, you need to press the right arrow to get out of the exponent. If using older OS, you need to separate the exponent with a math symbol, like +, _, *, (, ). I hope this helps.

Thanks for the video. If I could afford to hire you as a tutor I would. Times are tough though..
Anyway can you please explain to me why I cannot enter something as simple as :
simplify the expression - 3[2(3+9)-10]
seandelevany 1 year ago
@seandelevany Use parentheses instead of square brackets. Also make sure you use the "(-)" button instead of "-" for the first negative you have there.

What mac program are you using?
mbeckproductions 1 year ago
@mbeckproductions It is called TI-SmartView. It is available for sale to teachers at the TI web site. It is for mac or PC.
videomathtutor 1 year ago
@videomathtutor IS there a good mac app for transferring programs, i cant find one
mbeckproductions 1 year ago
@mbeckproductions I assume you mean to transfer TI calculator programs? You are supposed to use TI Connect X for that. Go to TI web site to download. It should also be on the CD-ROM that comes along with the TI Connectivity Kit (USB Cable).
videomathtutor 1 year ago
@mbeckproductions You should make a video for this as well, I really enjoy your videos

@mbeckproductions I will, eventually.

@videomathtutor IS there another program, i always get an error with that
mbeckproductions 1 year ago
@mbeckproductions Not that I know of.
videomathtutor 1 year ago
uh. Hey, just wondering. I know that you can put apps into the calculator. Is there any app that solves simple algebraic equations?
So if i input some thing like this : 2x+1= x-6
is there a app that will give me the answer. so in this case x=-7
thanks
anamorphoscope 1 year ago
@anamorphoscope The TI has a built in solver. No app needed. You don't input it like you listed, but it works. I cover it in my "Solving Linear Equations" video. You may also look at the app for sale at the zoommath website. It has some nice features that prove useful to you. By the way, a calculator is suppose to help you get answers, not be used to do all your work for you.

silver edition is no diff between ti-84 plus. The onnly diff is a lil bit of memory which will never matter and that the silver comes with games . Buy the regular and ul save a ton of ccash
anamorphoscope 1 year ago
@anamorphoscope Well, it is also a bit faster. The memory CAN make a difference, depending on the number of APPS you want to use. Either model is fine and I recommend either one. To save money, just rent one at the graphtor website.
videomathtutor 1 year ago
@anamorphoscope Where I bought it they were both being sold for the same price so I bought the silver one.

what does this mean i havent done anything i just press "y=" and it comes up with error:invalid same when i push "graph"
can anyone help me?
computer633k 2 years ago
Hmmm... you may need to reset the calculator. Consult your Guidebook to see how to do this. You may be also be running an app and not know it.

thanks very much!!

For you problem, press the following keys.
On
2nd
+
7

2. It will reset the defaults on your calculator. Maily good if you program. If not, you might be corageous enough to do 1 and have a full ram clear.

How do you graph a function that has a fraction in it?
cmoore2775 2 years ago
I will cover graphing when I do Part 2 of this series. In the mean time, perhaps you can enclose both the numerator and denominator within parentheses. This should help.
videomathtutor 2 years ago
OMG!! I LOVE YOU...I've needed someone to do this for soo long!. Thankyou for taking soo much time to explain everything. I'm borrowing one right now, but I'm getting the all pink one. It will be nice to know how to actually USE IT !

How do you modify a long problem without erasing the entire problem by clicking on clear.
Is there a way?

TI calculators and their algebraic only entry logic are very tedious to use. Most real world engineers use HP calculators...why do you suppose that is?
spokes64 2 years ago
Most HP calculators are RPN format, so they are easier to input data with less chance of error. Unfortunately, these calculators are also not very user friendly, and require a bit of a learning curve to use. I disagree that the TI calculators are "tedious" to use. They are actually the most user friendly calculators out there. They also get great support from TI, have both mac and PC software, and are updated frequently. HP cannot make those claims.
videomathtutor 2 years ago

Another thing to keep in mind is that some teachers may...
videomathtutor 2 years ago
... not allow the use of the HP 50, because it can "do it all."

I cannot spend TOO much time answering specific questions. That is why I am making the videos. Don't forget to watch my Basic Math videos for more help on using the TI-84 (and they are designed to be great reviews for those planning to take algebra!).
videomathtutor 2 years ago
ok.. i watched for over 3 minutes and you've wasted that much time and haven't even opened the box yet. Please assume we already have one and it's already out of the box and we know how to put batteries in it. If we were retards, we wouldn't even care about a calculator like this.
I am not watching the rest of this video out of sheer frustration

This is like looking at an older version of myself. It's kinda creepy, actually. When confronted with a calculator problem my AP Physics teachers grabs the calculator, announces she'll fix it, then walks across the room, and hands it to me.
