The value of 1 is disclosed in the existence of 0, relatively speaking then, could God be a similar nihility that stakes out our own actuality? Interesting correlation, reminds me of the video on the definitive nature of nothingness I watched a while back.
0:08 - 0:16 Symbol that denies the absence of meaning. Referencing the ability of concious beings like Batou and the Tachicoma to realise that an empty something is still a something. The absence of a something can be just as significant as the presence of it e.g. your keys - not having your keys is just as important as having them.
0:16 to 0:27 could be referring to 0 as a number which appears in every basal numbering system, be it decimal, hex or binary. All 3 have 0 in them.
Necessity for delineation stems from the need for categorisation to allow for later memory and recall.
I think the TachiKoma's can aquire ghosts, and gradually have done so, albeit ghosts of a different kind. Digital almost. Batou started out human so his ghost will always be a human ghost. Not sure how this explains the tachicoma concept of God.
@dinolandra Neither do you or any human in the world (myself included, of course), god is what you think is right, god is what you think its acceptable, god is the means to explain what happens to you when you die, "When you become 0", therefore, god is the need you have to explain something you don't know, god is the reason (or other theories) that your and my brain never gets screwed. If we didn't have faith in anything or hope, we sucked big time as windows vista, lol.
are the tachikomas from 2gig the same from SAC 1?.. I'd really appreciate if someone of you guys can explain me how they were recovered if they died for batou in SAC1.. and also, how they were recovered from the nuclear explosion in 2gig for SAC Solid State Society???.. they did like Kuze and went to the internet so the major recovered them? Thanks a lot!
@danfelbm They are the same. The units in the lab had their "brains" put on file when they were disassembled. Now there are two theories on the units that saved Batou. #1 their chips somehow survived when their bodies where destroyed, #2 their memories where copied with the others in the lab.
In second gig the Tachikomas make a backup file and send it out into the web before crashing their satellite into the nuke. In SSS the Major explains how she found them.
@bloo96 ok if that is true. When was the design change done? there was an actual anime design change made because of the license rights were not allowed from the previous GITS. hence he had to redesign theme. The Fujikoma's and the Tachikoma's are seperate designs basically because of petty license rights.
The original question wasn't asking if Fuchikomas are the same as Tachikomas, the question was if the Tachikomas from Solid State Society were the same as the ones "personalities" from the first gig.
To answer your question, I believe that whole licensing thing happened when the series first started production and Fuchikomas were never used. A ripoff version, however, was introduced into the show at the end of 2nd gig and was called the Uchikoma. (This is all an evaluative guess)
To sum up all the debate on this page and what the Tachikoma was saying:
Try to explain the value of one without using the concept of zero, technically you can't thereby proving zero exists indirectly, if only as a reference point for digital values. Similarly the Tachikoma sees God as a 'value' which gives analogue values (or ghosts in this context) their meaning, if only as a reference point.
What I gathered from this is that the Tachikoma sees God as necessary. If zero "denies" the "absence" of meaning, that means it has meaning, it has to exist in the system, and if it is comparing that to God, then God is necessary in the universal system. Also, the Tachikoma is jealous that Batou has a "ghost," or soul, and has the potential to die and experience heaven (or hell i guess).
So she thinks god is the absence of anything physical? Everyone without a ghost will one day become god, and everyone with a ghost will never have that happen?
@TopShelfization No, I get that part but I don't see how god being a 0 also describes how a machine will never be able to die and have an afterlife. Thanks for answering though.
@P4per126 illegal instructions do in fact exist, if you execute an privileged instruction in user mode, the cpu will cause a TRAP exception that jumps to supervisor mode and transfers control to the OS
It's funny to read the comments because in light of it we still have, by the end, Tachikoma who for all intents and purposes have souls. Remember, this whole speech is from the assumption that artificial thought does not and will never have what appears to be a 'soul'- something by it's own definition cannot be measured, included, or excluded. I think this only reinforces the ambiguity of the series, in regard to where the line between man and machine lies.
so lets translate kids: god is non-existing (yes he just said that). and that soul/ghosts exist only in living beings and cannot be recreated. the 0 the tachikoma refers to is the ghost of a human/living being.
@MCulpa the 0 in binary=the 0 in mathematics as in both meaning nothing...but a neccesary nothing in other words.. a ghost is the non-physical being.referred to as god and the sentimentalities of these ghost give meaning to things that a robot would see as an ABSENCE of meaning (because it is pointless to them). and the denial of that meaning is the incomprehension of it because even humans cannot explain the point of the sentimentality/spirit/existance of the ghost

I would type in a lengthy theory of mine about what this tachikoma is trying to say, but this 500 character limit is way too restrictive.
But, basically, this tachikoma is speaking complete gibberish.
"Maybe, just maybe, it's a concept that's similar to a zero in mathematics. In other words, it's a symbol that denies the absence of meaning, the meaning that's necessitated by the delineation of one system from another. In analogue, that's God, in digital, it's zero!"
GITS:SAC and 2nd GIG. You know your viewers are not geniuses, yet you throw something like this every ten minutes. Yet continue to be ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
they lamp shade it in one episode too. It's quite lulzy
so since we have a ghost we can die...animals die too...that must mean they have a soul as well...they make decisions too...they suffer just as much as we do when we die...they have instincts...my conclusion is that either thats true or there was no such thing as a ghost in the first place...that could be just as fabricated as the whole religion thing...
@red88alert I think it depends upon what they mean when they use the term "ghost". Does it mean a non-corporeal soul a la Descartes' "Ghost in the machine"? Does it mean self-consciousness and/or sentience? Or something else?
@SentinelConvergence well thats another set of well thought of questions which are very interesting but i still do think that animals have souls because if you remember...were animals too...
@red88alert being able to die, as in stop living, is possible on a Tachikoma. It just has to be destroyed. If it is neutralized and it's AI put into another robot, he is not the "same" since he never really was "something".
While Batou, if wounded, can have it's ghost transfered to another shell and he would still be the same.
The point is: your "animal" arguement was just out of place because we know about animal behaviour but not their minds.
@bf2lover42 so since we dont know about their minds we cannot exclude the possibility that they have souls...i wasnt trying to stay relevant with what the tachikoma said :D
Having a god denies the absence of meaning; it allocates worrying into faith... it transforms that faith into blissful ignorance - taking the subject as is, ultimately leading the individual to feel important, to feel... immortal. Man is a selfish being. The thought of a "god," denying an end to man's life, is a selfish thought; that man cannot die. That there is always meaning, that their god denies the end.. it denies the absence of the meaning man longs for.
Zero is "nothing" which is the negation of "something." The defining of a zero helps complete the mathematical system by defining what it means to not have something instead of having something. Similarly, the metaphysical (or a god) represents the negation of the physical realm, and thus while we can't actually experience the metaphysical, we can define it in order to give the physical realm in which we live meaning.
Basically, this is philosophy seen through the eyes of digital logic.
I'm just saying that everyone can choose to believe in one god or another. I personally believe that most(obvious exceptions excluded) religions are still centered around one aspect. The freedom given to an individual and whether or not they choose to believe. The tachikomas see the number zero as a god because mathmatically it's a number that you can't do anything with and to CPUs numbers are power. They have complete control over every number except zero, so the AI sees that zero as a god.
I want this video on my G705 unit.

GITS:SAC and 2nd GIG. You know your viewers are not geniuses, yet you throw something like this every ten minutes. Yet continue to be ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
they lamp shade it in one episode too. It's quite lulzy

so since we have a ghost we can die...animals die too...that must mean they have a soul as well...they make decisions too...they suffer just as much as we do when we die...they have instincts...my conclusion is that either thats true or there was no such thing as a ghost in the first place...that could be just as fabricated as the whole religion thing...
red88alert 1 year ago
@red88alert I think it depends upon what they mean when they use the term "ghost". Does it mean a non-corporeal soul a la Descartes' "Ghost in the machine"? Does it mean self-consciousness and/or sentience? Or something else?
SentinelConvergence 1 year ago
@SentinelConvergence well thats another set of well thought of questions which are very interesting but i still do think that animals have souls because if you remember...were animals too...
red88alert 1 year ago
@red88alert being able to die, as in stop living, is possible on a Tachikoma. It just has to be destroyed. If it is neutralized and it's AI put into another robot, he is not the "same" since he never really was "something".
While Batou, if wounded, can have it's ghost transfered to another shell and he would still be the same.
The point is: your "animal" arguement was just out of place because we know about animal behaviour but not their minds.
bf2lover42 1 year ago

20+ seconds of Batou standing still with a dumbfounded expression on his face; not moving...at all.
