  • I want this video on my G705 unit.

  • "Plus, because you have a ghost, you can even DIE! You're so lucky!"

    Man, that's deep.

  • i find this theory to be true.

  • i love the tachikomas

  • HURK..... when the hell does anime ACTUALLY do decent philosophy? oh, about now

this is a new experience for me, I'm going to go throw up I'm so happy and the butterflies are effecting my stomach

  • every time L or the tatchkomas talk i feel stupid

  • The value of 1 is disclosed in the existence of 0, relatively speaking then, could God be a similar nihility that stakes out our own actuality? Interesting correlation, reminds me of the video on the definitive nature of nothingness I watched a while back.

  • 0:08 - 0:16 Symbol that denies the absence of meaning. Referencing the ability of concious beings like Batou and the Tachicoma to realise that an empty something is still a something. The absence of a something can be just as significant as the presence of it e.g. your keys - not having your keys is just as important as having them.

0:16 to 0:27 could be referring to 0 as a number which appears in every basal numbering system, be it decimal, hex or binary. All 3 have 0 in them.

  • Necessity for delineation stems from the need for categorisation to allow for later memory and recall.

I think the TachiKoma's can aquire ghosts, and gradually have done so, albeit ghosts of a different kind. Digital almost. Batou started out human so his ghost will always be a human ghost. Not sure how this explains the tachicoma concept of God.

  • And people wonder why I think the Tachikomas are the greatest characters in GITS. LOL

  • Plus because you have a ghost, you can even die. You're so lucky!

    i don't think I call that lucky....lol

  • @Tweetymorris5 thats just... unfortunate... I see therapy!

  • Batou's face at the end.... priceless, the robot just trolled, that means it does have a ghost

  • "none of us will ever have a ghost " this is subjective, tachikoma...

  • Lol Batou just got blue screen because of overheating :D

  • LOL

  • so.. god is the existence of the concept of zero, and therefore the exitstence of ghosts? that's what i'm getting... 0_o

i'm also getting a somewhat worrying pain in my left temple...

  • @spazzypurplecat its just them attempting to 'splode your head... the less resistence you put up, the less likely it is to work...

  • That's the face I make when I read philosophy.

  • Why the hell don't they teach this at seminiary? lol

  • @TheProudAmerican777

    Bahnsen-approved

  • Never let AI get the idea of trying to comprehend 0

  • This is the best scene from GITS. Ever.

  • XD i saw this saturday night! i was like.. what is Batou thinking XD! hes like.. WHAT THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO!!!

  • 'plus, because you have a ghost, you can even die!! your so lucky!!!'

  • in other words the robot is an atheist

  • @girlontheoutside Robots have no concept of God. :|

  • @dinolandra Neither do you or any human in the world (myself included, of course), god is what you think is right, god is what you think its acceptable, god is the means to explain what happens to you when you die, "When you become 0", therefore, god is the need you have to explain something you don't know, god is the reason (or other theories) that your and my brain never gets screwed. If we didn't have faith in anything or hope, we sucked big time as windows vista, lol.

  • @SniperSX I love your analogy but really windows vista was not that bad I think vista hate was and is blown way out of proportion.

  • Riight, R2...

  • Batou XD haha.

  • cute

  • toilet rapist

  • This is why I love this anime.....the action is awesome and the ideas and dialogues go over EVERYONES heads! XD

And I think Tachikoma broke Batou! XD

  • It's performances like this that leads me to believe that GITS way be the best dubbed anime I've encountered.

  • I just have to laugh when I see Batou's face.

  • are the tachikomas from 2gig the same from SAC 1?.. I'd really appreciate if someone of you guys can explain me how they were recovered if they died for batou in SAC1.. and also, how they were recovered from the nuclear explosion in 2gig for SAC Solid State Society???.. they did like Kuze and went to the internet so the major recovered them? Thanks a lot!

  • @danfelbm They are the same. The units in the lab had their "brains" put on file when they were disassembled. Now there are two theories on the units that saved Batou. #1 their chips somehow survived when their bodies where destroyed, #2 their memories where copied with the others in the lab.

In second gig the Tachikomas make a backup file and send it out into the web before crashing their satellite into the nuke. In SSS the Major explains how she found them.

  • @bloo96 Thanks a lot!

  • @bloo96 ok if that is true. When was the design change done? there was an actual anime design change made because of the license rights were not allowed from the previous GITS. hence he had to redesign theme. The Fujikoma's and the Tachikoma's are seperate designs basically because of petty license rights.

  • Comment removed

  • The original question wasn't asking if Fuchikomas are the same as Tachikomas, the question was if the Tachikomas from Solid State Society were the same as the ones "personalities" from the first gig.

To answer your question, I believe that whole licensing thing happened when the series first started production and Fuchikomas were never used. A ripoff version, however, was introduced into the show at the end of 2nd gig and was called the Uchikoma. (This is all an evaluative guess)

  • To sum up all the debate on this page and what the Tachikoma was saying:

Try to explain the value of one without using the concept of zero, technically you can't thereby proving zero exists indirectly, if only as a reference point for digital values. Similarly the Tachikoma sees God as a 'value' which gives analogue values (or ghosts in this context) their meaning, if only as a reference point.

  • What I gathered from this is that the Tachikoma sees God as necessary. If zero "denies" the "absence" of meaning, that means it has meaning, it has to exist in the system, and if it is comparing that to God, then God is necessary in the universal system. Also, the Tachikoma is jealous that Batou has a "ghost," or soul, and has the potential to die and experience heaven (or hell i guess).

  • "Plus, because you have a ghost, you can even die! You're so lucky!"

So the robots think organic beings are lucky because we can actually die... No wonder they're always trying to kill us...

  • The best part of this video is Batou doing his 'O.O' face. X3

  • So she thinks god is the absence of anything physical? Everyone without a ghost will one day become god, and everyone with a ghost will never have that happen?

  • Batou's expression is just great ^^

  • the whole way batou is thinking "please dont kill me with that wench".

  • @megnus1 Best typo ever.

  • @LittleBigSnerky i did laugh when i read that :3

  • :O

  • Was that just an overly elaborate way of saying that it doesn't think there is a god?

  • What does god being comparable to 0 have to do with a robot never having a soul?

  • @JonLambert89 i think its trying to say its jealous it can't die and go to heaven.

  • @TopShelfization No, I get that part but I don't see how god being a 0 also describes how a machine will never be able to die and have an afterlife. Thanks for answering though.

  • so cute!

  • An existential Tachikoma, adorable!

  • HAHHAH batou is like WHAT THE FUCK?

  • i don't think they fully grasp the concept of death

  • I can't stop watching this. So bemusingly adorable.

  • How does the usage of binary imply there is an opposite of the natural world as a god? Let alone the existence of souls (or "ghosts").

This reeks of pseudo-philosophical bullshit. But I would be glad to be enlightened and proven wrong.

  • "batou-wtf-face.jpg" epicness

  • Batouface.jpg

  • You know i can actually keep up with the tachikomas conversations i kinda get what their talking about NO Lie

  • I just love Batou's face near the end. He's just like "WTF?"

  • Your brain has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

  • @P4per126 no don't tell me that even Sect 9 uses Windows instead of Linux or at least Apple? lol

  • @P4per126 HAHAHAHAH ITS FUNNY BECAUSE ITS TRUE HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @P4per126 illegal instructions do in fact exist, if you execute an privileged instruction in user mode, the cpu will cause a TRAP exception that jumps to supervisor mode and transfers control to the OS

  • The major was right. You are one messed up Tachikoma.

  • This blew my mind

  • Numbers are infinite, like the calculations of a circle. Math ≠ self-realization.

  • i think that tachikoma just when totally mind fuck and double mind fuck Mr. Batou

  • It's funny to read the comments because in light of it we still have, by the end, Tachikoma who for all intents and purposes have souls. Remember, this whole speech is from the assumption that artificial thought does not and will never have what appears to be a 'soul'- something by it's own definition cannot be measured, included, or excluded. I think this only reinforces the ambiguity of the series, in regard to where the line between man and machine lies.

  • ...I think you broke Batou. o_o

  • This is practically the entire show in a nutshell, minus the violence and the Major's silly outfits.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, God= zero means, god exists only as a place holder, it has no real effect but occurs because everything else must be balanced.

Ai has no soul due to it being digital, but because cyborgs are bio in orgin, they have souls.

  • so lets translate kids: god is non-existing (yes he just said that). and that soul/ghosts exist only in living beings and cannot be recreated. the 0 the tachikoma refers to is the ghost of a human/living being.

  • @LoveNoteProjects

No, he didn't say non-existing, just the equivalent of 0 in binary. The DENIAL of the ABSENCE of meaning.

You get the take home prize. :D

  • @MCulpa no the robot said 0 in MATHEMATICS.

  • @LoveNoteProjects

He also said he meant "in digital," which breaks down to binary.

Also: the *denial* of the *absence* of meaning.

God is the non-physical being that gives physical things meaning. That's my interpretation of the robot's statement, anyway.

  • @MCulpa the 0 in binary=the 0 in mathematics as in both meaning nothing...but a neccesary nothing in other words.. a ghost is the non-physical being.referred to as god and the sentimentalities of these ghost give meaning to things that a robot would see as an ABSENCE of meaning (because it is pointless to them). and the denial of that meaning is the incomprehension of it because even humans cannot explain the point of the sentimentality/spirit/existance of the ghost

  • @LoveNoteProjects

It's obviously not pointless to that robot, because it's very excited about Batou having a ghost.

  • Tachikoma's have souls like R2-D2

  • "it's a symbol that denies the absence of meaning" you could stop right there

  • ROBOTS ARE GOD!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!

  • one of the best series ever made (live action OR animated)

  • tachikoma is how i pick women up, they just can't resist there cute personality.

  • Man I love those Tachikomas!

  • I always call it as "BabbleBot". It talks too much.

  • @etoangfavoriteko the Tachikoma didnt talk enough.

  • His face at 0:44 is just epic.

  • why dose the tachkoma's voice sound so familer

  • @ellnats It's Ed from Cowboy Bebop

  • @IheartMREs91 no i checked it out its lynn minmay from robotech AWSOME!!!!!!!!

  • @ellnats I think I remember a boss with same voice during ICC patch during my world of warcraft days with same voice. Hope that answers youre question.

  • @SmokingWickerman not really but i looked it up and its the same as one of my fav anime girls her name is LYNN MINMEI from robotech

  • @ellnats think of Code Geass Zero's sister (can't spell his real identity's name)

  • @Dare9179 ya

  • @Dare9179 Lelouch?

  • Having only been introduced to Hofstadter in highschool, I envy those little guys for progressing so quickly. Maybe I should start drinking machine oil to grok the concepts easier.

  • I like how they take the conversation from the manga and further it.

  • They sound so much better in japanese version.

  • Remember, the tachikomas once considered trying to download enlightenment from a Buddhist monk!

  • You know I usually can't stand overly-cute anime characters, but I FUCKING LOVE Tachikomas.

  • @solidmonkey09 Its because theyre not just "overly cute" I like to think of them as hyper intelligent children trying to make sense of things around them.

  • @devileye669 I like how you think about them

  • i think my brain just had a stick ramed between its

  • Batou: O_O...........................?

  • I think that's the tachikoma he spoiled with non-synthetic oil its so cute! ^^ apparently he gave it natural oil and it corroded its circuits and made it.... well sapient I guess you could call it

  • @huntersdman yeah lol, i like how all the tachikoma have slightly different personalities, Motoko's is really serious and dosnt like to fail a task, Batous is playfull and really chatty, And saitos allways wants to hear more stories

  • Batou: "Yeah.... I'm lucky because I can die........." ._.

Me: "Your damn straight man, living forever would be both pointless and fucking boring!"

  • LMAO Batou must be thinking "did i just get mind raped by an A.I.? im getting to old for this shit" XD

  • It's like a Dad hearing his 5 year old son talk about Death and God on an Einstein Level

  • @Solqueen86

while I get what you are saying, Einstein didn't really talk about God. Replace Einstein with Aquinas or Newton and you're dead on

  • @dhaes

but talking about Death in the mathematical terms LIKE Einstein can work too.

But Aquinas or Newton is better used for this case

  • I love them :-)

  • Tachikomas : the goofiest and funniest military/police robots you'll ever see. ^^

  • Tachikomas are mental perv's

Why ? Because they mindfuck everyone unlucky enough to work or simply be with them.^^

  • This is how MEN Think......the way Batou is anyway ^_^;

  • Yeah, what the think-tank is saying is complete gibberish; all it does is replace god with zero because logically they are similar. Scientists can't do jack with god because such a supernatural concept is way outside the realm of human perception, while the number 0 is something that a CPU can't do anything with. I do see the similarity there.

But for death and the after-life, the Tachikoma is better off just asking Batou if he believes in a heaven or hell.

  • @cadman2300

well , think about this ...

an equation can substitute any addition of zeroes in it and it will come out the same

    same with life

if you get through the day , u can include god (which is a zero) and say its thanks to him u made it through

    so in theory

    1+2+3+0+4+0 = 10

    OR

u walked across the road and almost got hit by a car and say "thank god that car didn't hit me"

  • HAHA wow i remember this episode! thanks for uploading this brain fryer.

  • ok, ok. after hearing this, i look just like Batou. Plus i think my brain just fried...

  • Actually batou has eyes they just aren't eye balls. Those are basically cameras hooked up to his e-brain. If you have ever seen nubler from metalocalypse its the same basic thing. Robo-eyes

  • Batou. You may not have eyes, but man, that look was PRICELESS!

  • @KayozTheCynicalAlien I'd replace my eyes too, if I could make faces like that.

  • God as explained by a Tachikoma.

Now all we need is that episode from 2nd Gig where the Tachikomas give their theory on Zen

  • my brain is sore...

  • I would type in a lengthy theory of mine about what this tachikoma is trying to say, but this 500 character limit is way too restrictive.

But, basically, this tachikoma is speaking complete gibberish.

"Maybe, just maybe, it's a concept that's similar to a zero in mathematics. In other words, it's a symbol that denies the absence of meaning, the meaning that's necessitated by the delineation of one system from another. In analogue, that's God, in digital, it's zero!"

    Notice the use of double

  • Ranks right up there with what the Tachikomas did to confuse an android!

  • GITS:SAC and 2nd GIG. You know your viewers are not geniuses, yet you throw something like this every ten minutes. Yet continue to be ABSOLUTELY AWESOME

they lamp shade it in one episode too. It's quite lulzy

  • so since we have a ghost we can die...animals die too...that must mean they have a soul as well...they make decisions too...they suffer just as much as we do when we die...they have instincts...my conclusion is that either thats true or there was no such thing as a ghost in the first place...that could be just as fabricated as the whole religion thing...

  • @red88alert I think it depends upon what they mean when they use the term "ghost". Does it mean a non-corporeal soul a la Descartes' "Ghost in the machine"? Does it mean self-consciousness and/or sentience? Or something else?

  • @SentinelConvergence well thats another set of well thought of questions which are very interesting but i still do think that animals have souls because if you remember...were animals too...

  • @red88alert being able to die, as in stop living, is possible on a Tachikoma. It just has to be destroyed. If it is neutralized and it's AI put into another robot, he is not the "same" since he never really was "something".

While Batou, if wounded, can have it's ghost transfered to another shell and he would still be the same.

The point is: your "animal" arguement was just out of place because we know about animal behaviour but not their minds.

  • @bf2lover42 so since we dont know about their minds we cannot exclude the possibility that they have souls...i wasnt trying to stay relevant with what the tachikoma said :D

  • millions of dollars for research and development for sentient AI tanks

    Batou's expression: Priceless

  • Uh... yeah.

  • Having a god denies the absence of meaning; it allocates worrying into faith... it transforms that faith into blissful ignorance - taking the subject as is, ultimately leading the individual to feel important, to feel... immortal. Man is a selfish being. The thought of a "god," denying an end to man's life, is a selfish thought; that man cannot die. That there is always meaning, that their god denies the end.. it denies the absence of the meaning man longs for.

  • @Exczoso (o_0)

  • Comment removed

  • @Exczoso So that's your interpretation. Interesting.

  • 20+ seconds of Batou standing still with a dumbfounded expression on his face; not moving...at all.

  • Zero is "nothing" which is the negation of "something." The defining of a zero helps complete the mathematical system by defining what it means to not have something instead of having something. Similarly, the metaphysical (or a god) represents the negation of the physical realm, and thus while we can't actually experience the metaphysical, we can define it in order to give the physical realm in which we live meaning.

Basically, this is philosophy seen through the eyes of digital logic.

  • @solarrebirth Makes perfect sense to me.

  • @solarrebirth

And herein lies an answer to a much bigger question aswell, or does it?

  • @solarrebirth through the eyes of a Tachikoma, yup.

  • asdf asdf asdf dubbing asdf asdf asdf

  • I love this theory.

  • A wild BAtou has appeared, Tachikoma I choose you!Tachikoma uses confuscianism and philosophy! It's SUPER EFFECTIVE!!! The Wild Batou is confused...

  • God = Zero, i see what you did there...

  • This is what people look like when they watch the series for the first time.

  • Ghost in the shell LIVE ACTION WILL SUCK ASS .... Thumbs up if you think so

    - san man :D

  • omg idk about u guys but this is soo ironic and cute!!

  • "It means you can die! You're so lucky!"

  • I've never watched any classic anime aside from Spirited Away, Nausicaa and Mononoke, but that made me lul. I wanna watch this and Akira.

  • To me what would be the most painful would be to be envied for being able to die

  • 0:34 Batou seemed to have a face of "lolwut"

  • batou's probobly like W T F

  • Batou is thinking "oh god the major is going to kill me"

  • @galenwolf exactly that and the chief is gonna roast his ass

  • I'm just saying that everyone can choose to believe in one god or another. I personally believe that most(obvious exceptions excluded) religions are still centered around one aspect. The freedom given to an individual and whether or not they choose to believe. The tachikomas see the number zero as a god because mathmatically it's a number that you can't do anything with and to CPUs numbers are power. They have complete control over every number except zero, so the AI sees that zero as a god.

  • Batou's strangely statue-like thru the argument.

  • I love Batou's face at the end...it just says wow...wtf!
