@libreals I regret to say that this song has nothing to do with the hippo with noodles on his back. This is a much older hippo song and I think a more famous, funny and witty one.

My granny used to sing this to me as we walked along the beach at egremont opposite Liverpool!.Then again it was nearly all mud and no sand in those days anyway! Flanders and Swann,Brilliant stuff!
Eons ago when I was at a girls' school, the tennis courts were in a part of the grounds called The Hollow, so when we heard this, we thought it was about our school! Yeah, OK, I've grown up a bit since then, but still enjoy the number and loved the vid. with it - thanks.
Er... this is a (quite witty) -cast stuck over the original recording of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, who wrote the Hippopotamus Song - they are of course singing it at the speed intended. Please all check your spelling and grammar and facts before you post any more posts or patronising comments about them or anyone else)
I love your interpretation of this clasic and really look forward to the bedstead men. I'd even be willing to contribute a "Big Brass Broken Bedstead"
Conguating hippopotami. Mildly academic and rather earthy both at the same time. Lovely stuff.

@swollower a song for young and old alike. Btw the mud is back on the beach there. Have seen no singing hippos, only dead sheep unfortunately.

This was perfect after a martini (gin) at 2 AM. We used to listen to these when
I had an English roommate --my aunt was also fond of Flanders and Swann.
Nict to know they are not forgotten. The sloth and gnu songs are quite as good.

Great fun. Loved your wee photo montage to go with the song. Oh for the days of gentle and intelligent humour.

The amorous hippopotamus whose love song we know is now married and father of ten.
He Murmers 'god rot'em as he watches them grow, and he longs to be single again.
He Gambols no more on the banks of the Nile which Nasser is flooding next spring
With hippopotamas in silken pajamas, no more does he teach them to sing:
(chorus)
"At the Drop of Another Hat", (ca. 1963)

Imagine the command performance in which the entire British Royal Family joined in the chorus. I think Charles was about ten years old....

Hippo is no glutton he never dines on lemon custard;
He just likes his hotdog with a bit of hippopotamustard!
A hippo is never lazy, he's always full of hustle
and every single inch of him is loaded with hippopotamuscle!
A hippo will do his duty on that you can trust.
A hippo will always do exactly what a hippopotomust!
