At age 44 , Jan ove Waldner the king won his 9th Gold medal in the Swedish Champion ships in tabe tennis.. Thats what i call love to the sport.. I even heard hes going to try to play in next OS its sick :D..
@J0kerofHearts Actually no, they reinvented Penhold, they made a Ma Lin, then they made a Wang Hao, and table tennis has never been the same. liu guoliang sucked but at least he knew more about Penhold than most, that's why he's the coach.
Con respecto a los comentarios sobre la descripción de darkblue84, es una opinión basada en una preferencia, por lo tanto hay que respetarla. jan ove waldner is going crazy in the background xD as soon as he wins a point he jumps up shooting his hands with him but I still feel quite disappointed because I bet if liu guiliang hadn't loose to waldner 4 times in a row he would have continued playing table tennis not coaching but its all cool people could get his skills :]

In this 2nd set, Waldner owned Liu simply because he was able to play Liu's odd style. Liu is the type of player who discourages people from playing table tennis, especially at the amateur level where many players choose to use odd rubber to help them with their game. You have to be really good to beat someone half as good as you are when they use odd rubber. Perhaps the ITTF should standardize the rubber and have everyone use the same type.
dont get confuse by this "odd rubber' you r saying.. comparison = inverted rubber requires at least 5 years of training to master it whilst in the other hand the short pip requires an extra of 2 years to master it.. its really poor thing to have people like you to standardize the rubber.. with various type of rubber for tt will ensure that the sport remain interesting and attractive for people to enjoy the fast game.. that is tt dude

No, people will enjoy the game more if everyone uses smooth rubber. People want to see rallies, not errors caused by some odd rubber. Moreover, if one mastered the odd rubber, he would be much harder to beat than if he had mastered the smooth rubber b/c you have no equipment issue to deal with. You seem to be the kind with very limited tt skills and use non-smooth rubber. If using odd rubber isn't an advantage, Liu wouldn't use it to throw people off every now and then.
Liu, Kong, & Waldner are the all-time best, with Waldner ranking a slight notch above the other two. Waldner is like a combination of Liu and Kong. Like Liu, he not only has the hardest service to return in history, but also he has Kong's attacking ability, only better because besides his powerful backhand loop, he also has a curvy forehand loop that Kong doesn't have. Unlike Kong & Waldner, Liu's game relies greatly on his service, ball displacement, & pip rumble, forcing errors upon opponents.
The male one favored Liu over Waldner, obviously. Though it was understandable to support the compatriot player, it was unpleasant to depreciate Waldner that he was NOT the winner of Grand Slam. The female commentator also questioned his VERY view.
the male commentator was Jiang Ja Lian, 2 time WTTC champion and one of Waldner's major rivals.
i understand where Jiang's coming from with respect to Waldner's grand slam comments, even though i didn't quite like the depreciative tone in his voice.
wang liquin 3 times world campion, the fact many people love walnder playing doesnt nake him the best..how many 3 times world champion? if he is that good, he s been 6 times national champion and he s playing like 20 years..the career of liu is flaweless, every wttc and every OG at least one medal
That may be true too, but you see, it's not the awards that a player gets that makes him a good player. It's how he plays, and his overall feel and touch. Waldner has outstanding technique, has beat nearly all the chinese from generation to generation and even at 39, got to the semifinals at the Olympics and is a gentleman on the court too.
completely different eras. besides, dont look only at world titles. look at the entire career, and im sure waldner prevails. anyway, his game was brilliant
I'm just an average table tennis player. Watching the Great Waldner play makes me want to practice even more techniques. He is just so..."AMAZING and INSPIRING"..My HERO...Waldner!
Lui is a legend also. He has the most trick serves I have ever seen. This was back then were you can hide your serve. He introduce the RPG (reverse penhold grip) to counter the fast attacking shakehand players. Waldners placements of the ball is a good example to counter the penhold grip players. When they change to 40mm it gave a the RPG one hell of an advantage because they can attack on both sides and gives them more agle of attack. The game is slower compared to the 38mm ball back then.
silverstrak you obvisiously don't know alot about table tennis. Waldner was beaten many times compared to the "crap chinese guy". He had and still has extremely good serves, on par with Waldner's serves which were the best of their day, if not all time. Liu is the player who invented the RPG and coaches Ma Lin and the rest of the chinese national team. Liu is a legend in table tennis so just shut up. Liu didn't play well and Waldner was probably at his best. So shut up you idiot.
yo all u fukers can shut the hell up, waldner beat liu straight up and down, plus i hav a national ranking........u pricks dnt know nothing. hiding the serve is full of shit as wel........good players wil show u their service. look at how many ppl hav problems returning timo boll serves. also wud being chinese myself put down anuda chinese player, u dumb fuks, wang liqin is the king of tt.
You never make any sense. Waldner lost to Liu several times. And so what if you have a national ranking, doesn't mean you know everything about table tennis. You used to be allowed to hide your serves. Waldner used to hide his serves with his arm.
Now players have to show the contact between the bat and the ball. Liu coaches Wang Liqin and Ma Lin now. Liu taught Ma Lin the reverse pen hold backhand that he invented more or less. When Liu was at his best he was near unbeatable like Waldner was.
i know yrs bk they were allowed to hide their service.......like any1 dnt know that? anyway u tryna say waldner didnt outplay liu in this vid and made him look silly? liu is a good player, but r u stil tryna argue wid me bout the fact dat waldner didnt make him look silly in this vid?

zephyregrant 2 years ago
the male commentator was Jiang Ja Lian, 2 time WTTC champion and one of Waldner's major rivals.
i understand where Jiang's coming from with respect to Waldner's grand slam comments, even though i didn't quite like the depreciative tone in his voice.

lilkat93 2 years ago
anguerrero1 2 years ago
lilkat93 2 years ago
Yes, even the Chinese see Waldner as a God. You have to understand what he did to appreciate why he will always be #1.
imzadim 2 years ago 4
JohnLegendBeatles1 2 years ago
JohnLegendBeatles1 2 years ago

wang liquin 3 times world campion, the fact many people love walnder playing doesnt nake him the best..how many 3 times world champion? if he is that good, he s been 6 times national champion and he s playing like 20 years..the career of liu is flaweless, every wttc and every OG at least one medal
lilkat93 2 years ago
That may be true too, but you see, it's not the awards that a player gets that makes him a good player. It's how he plays, and his overall feel and touch. Waldner has outstanding technique, has beat nearly all the chinese from generation to generation and even at 39, got to the semifinals at the Olympics and is a gentleman on the court too.

haydonlee93 2 years ago
about what??
lilkat93 2 years ago
lilkat93 2 years ago
completely different eras. besides, dont look only at world titles. look at the entire career, and im sure waldner prevails. anyway, his game was brilliant

lilkat93 2 years ago

Waldner won the point anyway, but Liu's last shot was illegal. The ball did not go over the net.

I'm sure you definitely don't know what table tennis is.

Wrong. The shot was legal.
gsofficial 2 years ago 4
The ITTF rules state that the ball must go above or around the net. This happens alot in table tennis, it's legal.

lilkat93 2 years ago
anguerrero1 2 years ago 4

Lui is a legend also. He has the most trick serves I have ever seen. This was back then were you can hide your serve. He introduce the RPG (reverse penhold grip) to counter the fast attacking shakehand players. Waldners placements of the ball is a good example to counter the penhold grip players. When they change to 40mm it gave a the RPG one hell of an advantage because they can attack on both sides and gives them more agle of attack. The game is slower compared to the 38mm ball back then.
quickzilver333 3 years ago
silverstrak you obvisiously don't know alot about table tennis. So shut up you idiot.
rjkviegas 3 years ago
yo all u fukers can shut the hell up, waldner beat liu straight up and down, plus i hav a national ranking........u pricks dnt know nothing. hiding the serve is full of shit as wel........good players wil show u their service. look at how many ppl hav problems returning timo boll serves. also wud being chinese myself put down anuda chinese player, u dumb fuks, wang liqin is the king of tt.
silverstreaks86 3 years ago
You never make any sense. Waldner lost to Liu several times. And so what if you have a national ranking, doesn't mean you know everything about table tennis. You used to be allowed to hide your serves. Waldner used to hide his serves with his arm.
rjkviegas 3 years ago
Now players have to show the contact between the bat and the ball. Liu coaches Wang Liqin and Ma Lin now. Liu taught Ma Lin the reverse pen hold backhand that he invented more or less. When Liu was at his best he was near unbeatable like Waldner was.
rjkviegas 3 years ago
i know yrs bk they were allowed to hide their service.......like any1 dnt know that? anyway u tryna say waldner didnt outplay liu in this vid and made him look silly? liu is a good player, but r u stil tryna argue wid me bout the fact dat waldner didnt make him look silly in this vid?
silverstreaks86 3 years ago
But you called Liu crap when he is anything but you doughnut. Fix up man.
