I learned from Itailan Masons who had tools that were older than I.And as far as speed you lay brick right then speed will come in years of exp. When i in my 20's i could have competed with these guys n did well but now i lay brick 2 make $ get a good name n 2 make the homeowner happy. Take pride in ur work n U will go Far in the trade.
the droppage was unreal. theres loads of slashers who can lay more then 800 bricks in an hour if the boards and bricks are set up spot on for you, and tipping the joints etc isnt an issue .{slashing and doing a perfect job }thats the sign of a very good brickie !!!! not this shit.

@SwaggernautKNIGHT You will be fine, the math you will use isn't too complicated. The biggest thing you will need to be a bricklayer is how to problem solve. I have been a bricklayer for 10 years, you just need time, and one thing I will tell you as well is concentrate on your QUALITY not quantity! I take extreme pride in what I build!

Do you folks see ambidextrous guys laying to the leads and then simply changing hands and laying back the other way? Seems that the industry has lost it's education from 1950's time/motion studies.
If you want some nice fluffy mortar or compo as they say in UK or mud as we call it in Oz, then squirt some washing-up liquid into it and give it a good mix, but don't let the teacher see ya or they'll tell you not to 'cos it causes efflorescence, which is another name for salts, to appear in the joints. OR, you could put in a shovel ot 2 of hydrated lime, OR buy some mortar plasticiser from the DIY shop. It looks pretty impressive but it's an inferior quality wall.
what kind of mortar do they use at these competitions? maybe its cus these guys are skilled masons but the mortar looks really easy to work with, im taking a masonry class for a high school completer and this stuff looks like its easier to use than what we use

1:24 the vertical joint isn't filled all the way with mortar - but i read somewhere that only one side of the wall is going to be judged - is that true? Either way i think they look fast and they surely know their stuff...
@ashfeltton - Couldn't agree more. I'm no hater and I'm no brickie but I'm in the process of building 2 walls. I admit that I'm never gonna be fast but I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity. These bricks are pretty much, as you said, stacked rather than layed. You could probably still push this wall over in a months time.

my boss would fire me the first hour for waisting tomuch mud on the ground, mud isnt cheap, neither is clean up. they are fast and probably dont drop so much at their jobs

If these guys layed this way for me i would fire them. Theres something called full head and bead joints and being clean. I dont care how many you can put down if it wont pass inspection then whats the point.

If you want some nice fluffy mortar or compo as they say in UK or mud as we call it in Oz, then squirt some washing-up liquid into it and give it a good mix, but don't let the teacher see ya or they'll tell you not to 'cos it causes efflorescence, which is another name for salts, to appear in the joints. OR, you could put in a shovel ot 2 of hydrated lime, OR buy some mortar plasticiser from the DIY shop. It looks pretty impressive but it's an inferior quality wall.

what kind of mortar do they use at these competitions? maybe its cus these guys are skilled masons but the mortar looks really easy to work with, im taking a masonry class for a high school completer and this stuff looks like its easier to use than what we use

@ashfeltton - Couldn't agree more. I'm no hater and I'm no brickie but I'm in the process of building 2 walls. I admit that I'm never gonna be fast but I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity. These bricks are pretty much, as you said, stacked rather than layed. You could probably still push this wall over in a months time.
