my grandfather earnest clare arnold was a cook on board the Missouri, i have his cards certifying his presence at the formal surrender Tokyo Bay sept 2 1945. My dad told me a story of a poker game on the missouri in which my grandpa won a Kamakazi,s pilots knife along with some other things that i have, but i can,t verify the knife and sheath .any help with that ; arnoldtimothy62@yahoo.com
We have the Battle Ship Alabama BB 60 here in my hometown of Mobile Alabama. I'm proud to be in the small number who assisted in it's procurement and removel from the mothball fleet in Bremerton Washington to Mobile, by becoming a Rear Admiral in the Alabama Navy. I fly my two star flag on my wall above my computer.
My husband was a young Navy man who was there. He had the job of bringing the captain of his ship (the Lenowee) to the ceremony and was cruising the nearby waters while the ceremony was underway.
I thought the music was great, really added to the sense of the era and its culture. It is the music nowadays that ruins most things. Appreciate your family connection to this ship, I saw it in Washington State many times.
You Dumb Fuck.. You don't know the history do you.. This song is Swing, Swing, Swing by Benny Goodman.. and It is one of the greatest song ever.. and I am sure that all those soldiers serving in WWII would swing themselves away when there were not in the battle!!!!
Thanks for posting! I noticed that you had the tour guide all to yourselves, is this common? Was she Navy, former Navy or Parks service? How long was the tour? Are you free to later go where you want?
We were part of a group of about 7 people. Getting to the ship early helped out a lot.
The guide works for the non-profit that operates the memorial. She really knew her stuff and history.
You aren't allowed to wander off anywhere but you do get a lot of freedom to roam around the areas on the tour and there is no pressure to move on to the next stop.
We saw just about everything except for the engine room compartment.
When I go back I will try the Arizona again. I was just sayin if I had takin the Arizona tour there is no way I would have been able to see the Bowfin and Mo. It really is sad to know how many lives were lost on that day...my Dad was stationed in Hawaii during Vietnam. Im glad the same event didnt happen..for these words may not have been typed. Thanks for replying Halo.
To see this massive ship on video serves it no justice. While in Hawaii on my honeymoon we ventured from Waikiki to Pearl Harbor to see the Arizona. All tours were full so we took the Bowfin and Missouri tour instead. Both the submarine and battleship tours were great and I'm almost glad I didnt see Arizona after all. Standing next to the turrets is awesome feeling. Standing at the spot of the Japanese surrender was surreal. If you ever get a chance to go to Hawaii include this in your trip.
I missed my chance to see "Big Mo" before it was towed to Pearl Harbor. You don't realize how big the Iowas really were until you see them in drydock. The hull sits deeper then a liner, plus they are wider in the beam.
A shipmate and I were very fortunate to paint the port hull from the waterline to the main deck when "Mo" first arrived from Bremerton. About 70 of us from the Carl Vinson donated a weekend in port to help the foundation out. Great ship!
oh, and just a little fun fact, just to give everyone a idea how massive this ship is, the barrels on each turret weights as much as a SPACE SHUDDLE, and if you had the entire turret (includding all 3 barrels and the turret itself) the wieght is equal to 3 PASSENGER PLANE JUMBO JETS thats is really heavy
hey not to rain on your parade but it the "mighty mo" lol, anyways i love this whip my grandfather served on this ship and i have personally have the privilege to walk around on the ship not once but TWICE its truly a marvelous ship -LONG LIVE THE MISSOURI-
Agree, I have been there myself. I took a trip to Hawaii, and I have been to Pearl Harbor, sad deal that it happend. I also got a chance to see and board the Mighty Mo.
And loved ships ever since, even the long forgotting Flying Dutchman.
What is cool is that it's moored right next to the Arizona Memorial. You can see where the war started, then stand on the very spot it officially ended. Pretty cool.
Very good video. I visited Big Mo a couple of years ago. The only recommendation I can make is to scale back the music. I love the commentary and its a little hard to hear.
Hi, I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. I've created a clip of a WW2 battleship trading card set. It is rumoured that Hitler purchased this set for his U-boat personnel.
i was in A-gang,i worked in aft steering in 1991.this was my first ship in the navy.

My Father-in-Law served on BB-63 and was aboard for the surrender. He called it the Big Mo so it was good enough for me!!
By any name, a grand and historic ship!

The music should have been mixed at a lower volume so you could hear her. Other than that, it's a nice ship. I visited it in 2003.

Greatest ballistic combat vehicle mankind has ever made. And the fact that it brought peace to the whole world makes it that much more amazing.

Totally agree there is no way to capture the size and power of the ship on vide, at least on youtube! A 50" plasma set maybe.
Highly recommend to see in-person if circumstances allow you to.

video is good but with the music you can't hear what the guide is saying.

when I was in Hawaii we seen the USS Missouri but didn't go on it. Even though I've seen the Queen Mary and the Missouri is still pretty big.

There is word that the US Marine Corps wants several of the Iowa-class battleships to remain in a shore bombardment role.
Thanks for the video by the way. It's great for those of us who can't make it out to Hawaii.
