Why is it so hard to grasp? It's for science! Science has given you all the technology you have! We couldn't survive without technology. It's what seperates men from animals. Well they obviously spent billions of dollars for something! What CERN is looking for here mainly is the Higgs Boson, it's a theoretical particle that supposedly gives particles mass.

But what if they find something amazing in there? What if they find something that can be put to use to do a lot better than 5 billion dollars can? There's obviously something in there we don't know about, and they're trying to find it to 1) learn about nature and 2) use the knowledge to put it to good use.
One example: people invented airplanes, we can now get food and supplies to hungry people in India faster. See what I'm saying?
