@stuporstar - love your username! I don't think I can imagine a person being "long" so my statement about the enthralling, colourful and too-short video fails to mention that I meant "anything that is like a motorway".
@newforestroadwarrior - yes, climbing from J11, the A3090, across the Itchen and up the hill to J10, the A31. As Hong Kong Phooey said "COULD BE!" Wasn't this the road scheme where the infamous "Swampy" opposed the bulldozers?
one of my favourite SE tracks...so sad and dramatic...what a massive surpise to find out its a reworking of an old tune...thanks for introducing me to the beautiful voice Joan Baez :@)
don't forget this is merely a reworking of 'silver dagger' - a traditional country song. it is brilliant though. ... but dolly parton's version is the best.
Excellent, as always. But don't talk of them in the past tense. They are still going. Check out their last cd, Tales from Turnpike House and the sublime 'A Good Thing'
They were, at the time people didn't know what to make of them i loved everything they did, she (Sarah) had a beautiful voice, but it was more than that.A sign of a great band you cannot pic a favourite song.
Very under rated and mis-timed group, top quality in every sens, love their stuff.
As to missing content on You Tube, seems like some corporate ass wipes have been scanning to remove any material they can, then they wonder why people start downloading bit torrent and limewire for illegal copies, slitting their own throats, instead of thinking outside the box.
yeah i was just going to mention that. i heard this on the radio for the first time in years and thought, hang on a minute... this is silver dagger! Prefer the Dolly Parton version myself ;-)
Boy, what a vast array of emotions from the dorky members in the car. I have GOT to see them live to ensure that they have pulses. Their shows look like a ball. What a great band!
Such a beautiful, bittersweet song. It's almost haunting. I love the lyrics so much, and the while the video by itself is kinda dull, it seems to fit this song well. Thanks for posting!
what were they like 80s or 90s so crazy

Beautiful song.
So to be like a motorway you must be dull, grey and long. The video doesn't really achieve that! lol

@evilrobottolhurst She said "LIFE was like a motorway", not a person.

I think the motorway between 1:57 and 2:07 is the Twyford cutting on the M3, about 12 miles from Southampton.

@evilrobottolhurst Might well have been - there was a fair amount of opposition when the Twyford cutting was first mooted.

Wow, I never realized the similarity to "Silver Dagger"- maybe that's a subliminal reason why I like this song so much!

This song makes me wish I had been older in the 90s, so that I could have actually listened to Saint Etienne when they were popular... (born in 92)

Interesting! The vocal melody is also identical to "Fair And Tender Ladies" by Gene Clark on the compilation album "Flying High"...

I don't know, Heavenly were a good label. The Saints' rep will be seriously revived in the near future (in their favour). That is inevitable.

Excellent song. The melody is a cover of "Silver Dagger" which was reocorded by Joan Baez. I love you Bob, Pete and Sarah!!!!!!!!
