  • Well it was a drop 3rd and that catcher needs to cool off she needs to let the call be a call if she wants to umpire then go right ahead but over all yea it was

  • I'd call it a trap and a dropped third strike.

  • drop 3rd strike

  • Ump in the field blew it. Don't overturn a call unless he asks for help

  • she would have been out at first if the catcher flipped her glove around to stop the ball on the block

  • She caught it. It was her mit that touched the ground.

  • Yay drop ball!

  • Once i was batting at the first one was a strike and i swung the bat and i missed then the next pitch was over my head and the umpire called STRIKE!! and i was like wat! and the next pitch was over my head again and he said STRIKE!! and im like ur stupid!! but in my head.so he was a stupid umpire.Oh and it touched the ground so yh it was a drop 3rd strike

  • yh it touched the ground but it didnt look like it

  • I love when the catcher crosses her arms.. lol

  • the base umpire or plate umpire cannot overrule or change the person call. he was just likely telling him what he saw and he decide to change it.

  • Wow that was close. But you couldn't really call it a bad call, I mean from the umps view it would look like she had it. Only the 2nd base ump would be able to make that call.

  • no catch, get the call right is the most important thing and a base ump absolutely can offer his input if he believes he saw something differently

  • no catch

  • she dropped it but that umpire shouldnt have done what he did unless he was asked for help real umpires should never over turn plpate umpires calls unless asked.

  • yes, she dropped it. happened to me before

  • The Dixie Chicks finished 2nd there two years in a row. Man, they were a good team, but could never pull it out.

  • when the runner ran you should of threw it to first but the catcher got confused and tried throwig the runner on third. some times we have to play it off or sell it to get the call. or simply call for an appeal ! thats my opinion

  • @aztec469 should have not should of lmao

  • she did not drop it, i have been a catcher for 4 years, and i have had that happpen, it makes me mad, but oh weellll. i think she should have been out, but thats just me.

  • This is one of those moments where the base umpire went fishing in someone elses pond. Yes it appears that the ball is on the ground when it makes contact with the glove making it a trap (dropped third strike) however the base umpire should have kept his mouth shut unless he was appealed to by the home plate umpire.

  • It could have been a dropped 3rd strike. However, the plate umpire called her out, she's out. It was an easy sell. The base umpire needs a kick in the head for putting his partner in a no-win situation.

  • It was dropped. However, the umped called the runner out so the catcher did not make a play because of this ruling. The call should not have been reversed.

  • Im a softball player also. i play pitcher, 3rd, shortstop, and CATCHER. That was a dropped 3rd strike. she did have it in her glove but then she fumbled it and it fell out. You can tell because she looked to the ground to pick it up. sorrrryy((:

  • im an umpire for softball and yes that was a dropedthird strike

  • Looked like a dropped third strike and I would've called it as such. This is a situation where coaches should teach their players when in doubt, to run to first anyways.

  • I would've called this a dropped 3rd strike. Looks like she catches it then it bobbles and her mitt goes to the ground. looks as if she has the ball "trapped" with her mitt. Just like if 1st baseman drops the ball, and then just reaches out and grabs the top of ball, the runner is safe. Must pick it up off the ground. must have hand or mitt UNDERNEATH the ball and complete control. Same as a football catch.

  • @ Valley extreme;; Yeah just because you play softball, doesn't mean you can tell if it was a drop 3rd strike...I play softball too, and it TOTALLY wasn't a 3rd strike drop. she had it in her glove. Kaay? Simple as that.

  • @monicaroxursoxoff12 well u must not know becuzz i play softball too and tht was a drop 3rd strike

  • what's unfair is the catcher didn't throw to first cause she saw the ump called him out. the base ump didn't even consult with the ump at the plate before making his call. i'm not ump, but it just seems unfair...

  • where is this game at? i know ohio, but where?

  • As an umpire, watching from where the base umpire was watching, I would have called it a dropped third strike, cause when you first watch it it looks like her glove is in the dirt looking for the ball. However, looking at the slow motion version it isn't, the ball is right in the catchers glove, the plate umpire had it right the first time.. Unfortunately the catcher got jipped. The base umpire shouldn't have said anything unless his partner asked him, and up until that point he hadn't.

  • it was hard to tell but i would have called it a drop 3rd also... but i don't think the base ump should have overrulled the home ump after he made the call... that happened in one of my games just with a different situation...

  • Either way the catcherv has to make the throw to first to leave no doubt if hitter is out or not

  • the girl was out! in the slow motion part of it the ball is in her glove! she was out

  • of course...

at one part of the video..

you can see her glove hit the ground and her hand go to the ground to pick the ball up. so i would call it a drop 3rd strike.because i play softball and that same thing happend to me and it was a drop 3rd strike so yes.

  • Hard to tell from the video, but once the plate umpire ruled it a catch the base umpire should not have overruled him. If the plate umpire felt he needed help he should go for help but short of that it's the plate umpires call all the way.

  • honestly looked like a trapped ball i could not see the ball so i dont know i would say the catcher did not catch the ball because to me she scooped the glove with her right hand so basically it didnt appear to be caught by the catcher either lol

  • this really looks like a dropped third strike. In the slow motion part it looks like the catcher "trapped" the ball after dropping it. When of course a trap is merely just having your glove on top of the ball on the ground. You don't actually have possession of the ball

  • Actually, this does not appear to be a trapped ball to me. A trapped ball is one that the glove is OVER. In the slow-mo, it appears that the catcher turned her glove over (palm up). That is not technically a trap.

  • its not treated as a batted ball its treated as an error on the catcher. the base umpires should be looking inon that to give the plate ump an extra set of eyes considering he has the top of the catchers head and the catchers back to look through to try and see it. I feel it was a drop 3rd strike.

  • I do some umpiring, and I've always felt this is the worst rule in softball/baseball. Strikes one and two hitting the dirt are still strikes one and two. Strike three hitting the dirt is treated the same as a batted ball? I never got that logic.

  • i play softball. and i can tell it was totallyt a drop 3rd strike. do you remember where this game was palyed?

  • This was versus the Czech National team at 16U PONY Nationals 2008 in Ohio.

  • From this angle, and from all that we see, that was a dropped third strike. There is a dust kick up, and some people are debating that it was the batter. But the dust was there before the batter had even started running. And the base ump, typical guy. Can't keep his mouth shut xD

  • I certainly agree with the fact that he only needs to say something if asked! That seems to be the major point here. The homeplate ump made a call, so that's the call.

  • Base umpire needs to keep his mouth shut on this until asked for help. If he wants to help during the play, give some sort of visual cue when the play occurs. I give a fist next to my leg if the ball is caught and I point to the ground if it isn't. It just looked really bad that the base umpire called that runner safe without helping the plate guy when when the play did happen. Definitely poor communication.

  • This is probably the best comment on this video. To have to go and zoom in and slow the footage as much as it was to tell means the call could go either way. Good call on the lack of communication, as the field umpire, he should have called time and talked with the partner rather than flatly overrule him like that.

  • In all honestly it was a dropped ball. it is the base umpire to make this call WHEN ASKED. It looks really bad when somebody overrulles you with out a conference or ask for help

  • If the ball did indeed hit the ground first you would see dust kick up. I see a minute amount when the glove strikes the ground, until then nothing. I think it is indeed a catch and subsequent strikeout.

  • Yup she dropped it. The ball hit the dirt! That is a dropped ball all the way!

  • He essentially calls what he sees which is the ball in the glove.

2.) The base umpire supposedly has a view and overrules the UIC on this play by awarding the runner first base. While the result may be the 'right' result - it was developed exactly the wrong way. The base umpire should have done NOTHING until requested for help. The offense should have asked the UIC to get help, there should have been a conference and the UIC should have overturned HIS call as it was HIS call to make.

  • There are a number of things on this that are unfortunate. Yes, from this vantage point, it's a dropped third, but barely. I say barely because with our view, we can see it clearly with the benefit of still frames.

1.) The UIC is essentially blocked out of this play partly due to poor mechanics and partly because the catcher turns into the ball to smother it. His head height it too low to get the right angle on the ball and therefore misses the actual drop and smother/catch.

  • definitely a dropped third strike, when the catcher goes to come up with the ball the ball obviously hits the ground in the slow motion replay and the catcher replaces the ball in the glove.

  • Looked like a drop 3 to me.
