Victorialand is an amazing album and if I was paid to listen to their music I would be a billionaire...and of course the Cocteau Twins and shum65 would get a big share of it just because they deserve it for being who they are!! I love it so much it's beyond what language can convey and I stand in awe at the glory I can see.Listening to this band always brings out the highest thoughts in me.
There is something ethereal and yet haunting about this tune. The push-pull dynamic of the vocals, the beautiful guitar work, and lack of percussion work to create a work much like a tree. It begins as something small and gentle in the ground then works it was to something majestic.
@shum65 Yeah. But more the winters in the small northern town where i grew up. i never get tired of listening to this record. i saw them kick off with lazy calm at the royal court in liverpool around 25 years ago (Dif Juz were the excellent support)
This is another good example how Guthrie made quite simple guitar lines in to an ethereal song base and made it work impecably. It just compliments Liz's singing. (as Shum's video does the song!) I can't recall any other band that has fitted everything so well 'together'. Those guitar chords are like jewels floating down a waterfall, and Liz's voice is sunshine dancing above it all <3
shum just a quick 2nd comment-This song is like a surprise journey that for the first 38 seconds you´ve know idea where you´re heading and then lift off-not explosively so just subtly diverted to someplace else you weren´t expecting or even thought existed on the map-paradise found- we´ll be listening to this in 50 years time and still be in awe- of that I´m certain-thanks
Amazing track, simply amazing-how on earth they even began to construct and create this is beyond me-if genius is one % inspiration and 99 % perspiration then these guys sure knew how to sweat!!!Gotta go and be inspired by another track and video-mmmmm....what next???cheers shum
I hear the words "infanticide" and "suicide" in these lyrics. Maybe that's just my Rorschach interpretation, but then, maybe she's talking about those crazy penguins in Antartica.
Regardless, this is just about my faorite song of theirs. It seems soft and gentle initially, but becomes searingly intense.
Thank's shum65 for all your great vids.I love Victorialand it is so relaxing and helps smooth out the goosebumps Garlands always gives me,even after more than 25 years.p.s. love t.m.c. +D.C.D.too.
Victorialand is something from another dimension ... and this track is my favourite. Do you have The Moon and The Melodies? A CT Harold Budd collaboration? And then there's The Pearl by Harold Budd and Brian Eno. Anyhow, thanks for this.
Victorialand, more so than other CT offerings, is a trip to sublime and wonderful destinations unknown in the physical world. It is wonderful to see it in pictures, even if your pictures are different than the ones I might have made. Wonderful rendition Shum!
Sublime video Shum65.j'attend toujours avec impatience la suivante et je ne suis jamais déçus.For me,the best Cocteau twins album is "Treasure".But all is so different and so wonderfull. Thanks
This would be my particular favorite album by the Cocteau Twins although I never like to say favorite especially when it comes to their music. Each album a new transgression into another dimension one door closed another opened to a different emotion a different experience. So many emotions in one song makes you feel numb all I can do is drift into oblivion. I wish I would have got to see this band live but I'm so glad to have some across their music. Thanks for the post Shum!
Finally, on a more somber note, which may NOT interest those who do not like interpretations of CT songs. Anyway, more than a few people have either heard definitively, or at least similarly concluded that this lovely song actually deals with the tragic and cruel commercial seal hunt, in which Nature's beautiful precious seals are clubbed to death, thus bringing a blood blush to the snow. Sarah Palin would probably take her whole family along for the fun and spectacle.
Oh, one more thing. I spotted thos bits from our trio's brief October 2008 appearance together on stage, after too many years apart, at that Q Magazine (I think) award ceremony. That was a nice touch, shum!
Oh, shum, is that yet another person trying to reach the Chinese Take-Away and dialing you by mistake. Just like they bothered poor Hyacinth Bucket. You really need to get your number changed on the white push-button neo-deco phone, my last number redial facility!
This song is so achingly beautiful. The strumming guitar - the stratospheric reaching high voice, mixed with the mid-range vocals. It all sends a chill done my spine, still, after nearly 23 years. Your video, shum, adds to the experience.
ahhh thank you much shum, how wonderful its listening to the Cocteau twins,i really enjoy listening to this songs, you work its awesome to this kind of music.5★★★★★ i love it.

after enjoying Victorialand and all the other Cocteau Twins albums
I was really surprised to find out that all their albums hadn't gone to
number 1, in fact none of them. I'd just assumed they had. They were
all so marvelous. Its strange what you imagine when you are new.
I'd pictured In Our Angelhood as their first number 1 single and I thought
Song to the Siren, the Thinner the Air and Teardrop must have topped
the charts judging by often they were played on television as soundtracks.
flaxlawna 2 weeks ago
@flaxlawna Me to, they were all no1s for me, guess the music industry
just wasnt ready for them, though they often topped the Indie charts,
A pure class act that changed the music world forever :))
