  • indycar aero is an absolute fucking joke, safety regs are also a disgrace....both are key factors in the higher amount of fatalities compared to f1

  • @bradleyblackster I would agree they shouldn't be on ovals cause if you spin out it's not like nascar where there is roof flaps. When you are in an indycar and sliding or spining out at high speeds these cars reach you WILL blowover. I think unless your cars go slow If there is no roof flaps keep them off the ovals

  • @2ILLWorldProductions very true

  • @bradleyblackster No it's not. It's the catch fencing. F1 cars are much slower as well.

  • @Ixdriftz yes it is, how come f1 cars dont go airborne the moment they make contact with anything, f1 cars are geared slower in actual fact, BAR honda ran their car up to 407km/h, and back in the v10 era certain parts of monza had cars clocked at 369km/h, either way motorsport should not have fatalities but the lack of aero on these cars add to the theatre of the sport

  • QUE SUERTE TUBO

  • im almost positive that mario said "im done" after this and never got in a racecar with intent to compete again

  • @fatriani He did.

  • Mario is a legend. This fuckin proves it.

  • Wonder if that was the same year and area where Tony Renna was killed?

  • lucky sun of a big one

  • HEY WAIT!...I just won the ride on the 2-seater!

  • Super Mario soils his underpants! :-)

  • Super Mario !

I remember well, Mario has done the best lap of all the time the lap before

  • BAD CAMERAMAN!

  • @burton0078 IIRC, it was shot from a traffic helicopter that was finished covering a traffic issue on the west side and was heading back downtown to the tv studios. They decided to swing by the Speedway just to get some footage for the newscast and just happened to capture this.

  • mario andretti's thoughts....'this is much different than i remeber...do da dooo...oh CrAp...ahhhhh..sky...track...sky...track...sky...track...sky...track...ok i'm retired for good now.'

  • I remember I left the track to go home, turned on the TV to watch highlights and found that I just missed Mario jumping back in the car. I was so hyped to see him back. I knew after surviving a video game crash like that he was done. He was actually doing really good with the speeds on that car, shame. I remember watching his last Indy 500, made me cry a bit as a 13 year old kid...

  • Was this before Kenny Brack's Crash at Texas?

  • @toma23rulz

Yes. This was in April of 2003. Kenny's crash was in the last race of that season at Texas.

  • Well, that's one way to cross a road.....

  • Mario= SWAG

    u cant kill him...

  • Mama Mia! That looked bad!

  • Wow it was like a fricking cartoon! How do you not die in something like that?

  • Bummer!

  • that looked fun :D

  • the people from outside the track: "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, its a car crashing at 200 mph in midair!"

  • questo non è un volo è in orbita!!!

  • And he lived..? How the fuck

  • @Kyeti151 Mario was fortunate that he landed belly-pan down, and the car didn't get caught up in the catch fence, otherwise it would have ripped the car apart like a cheese grater.

  • gotta be the worst cameraman in history

  • @TheBirdmanOfToledo it was an areal shot from a helicopter... there were no cameras on the property except for the helicopters.... if the speedways cameras were in use then there you would have a view from each corner and the straightaways so the view would be better

  • @AJ1964

they got turbo engines too, and are adapted for ovals, so it's not surprising

when it comes to speed in corners and braking the F1 easily beats and IndyCar, and it's more physically demanding to drive too.

Drag racing isn't even a sport in my mind as little as tractor pulling is. Fast for a few seconds straight ahead requires no smart driving or fitness. Besides all dragstips looks exactly the same, there's just one Eau Rouge in Spa, and one Nurburgring.

  • this is my local tv station lol

  • lucky to walk away. people think this racing isn't to hard but look at what happened to roland ratzenberger, ayrton senna, dale earnhardt, paul dana and so many other drivers. these guys have amazing saftey equitment the best in the world, and med support 3 minutes away. if you can drive better than them go ahead but if you can't don't start bragging

  • most amazing crash EVER!!!

  • @AJ1964 For sure, i would love to see f1 drivers competing in the Indy500, but as by now f1 doesn't need Indy. Every single f1 race has a multiple tv tv audience compared to the Indy 500!

  • @villy27 In other countries, yes, but not in America.

  • Jeez man, Indy hates the Andretti's. Mario gets in the car just to run a few laps to help out his sons team & the place damn near kills him. Almost like hey just because you've been away, don't think I forgot about the Andretti curse...

  • nice flight! but no wonder he didn't die....

the crash and impanct wasnt big at all..

i wouldnt say that he was lucky. just this amazing flight makes it look like fatal crash lol.

  • For all the bad luck Mario has had at the Speedway .... this one instance of good luck makes up for ALL of it!

  • To jest Michael Andretti, a nie Mario Andretti !

  • The camerman was in a trafic helicopter

  • why dont they have racers take the place of those crappy cameramen? at least they could keep their focus and not lose what theyre tracking.

  • Mario makes some great wine at his winery! =D

  • love those IRL cars. So technical and advanced....not...

  • dat car backflipped so fast i couldnt even count da backflips

  • Amazing! Go Mario!

  • lucky

  • omg.. he's not DEAD!!... wtf!

  • @jcynavarro He never hit anything hard at all.....

  • He's not dead....

  • Yeah he is still alive!

  • Mario Andretti had balls of steer

  • the interviewer looks like jeremy kyle

  • fuck off with the ad

  • Did he race?

  • Holy crap, hes so lucky that it landed on 4 wheels, if he didnt that would have surely killed him!

  • @bwee11 Not necessarily. The rollbars on these things are pretty tough.

  • do a barrel roll they said...

  • It is amazing that he survived this crash. I still don' get how Dale Ernhart died after tapping the wall in Daytona.

  • Well as some believe Nascar planned it hahahaha fuckin idiots. Yeah lets kill the biggest name in our sport that will really get boost ratings for the next 10 years. lol.

  • his skull detached from his spine. its common for drivers back in the day. they had safety devices to prevent that but dale refused to wear it. thought it would strangle him.

  • Tapping?

  • This is an example of the Andretti curse in effect.

  • wow

  • SPELL RIGHT MORON

  • He was interviewed...... Did you cut your chin before?! I'm sure you didn't died from that.

  • For "seconds after the crash"...those safety cars made good time. Look how one is already entering the short chute when Mario goes flying by. I found this video by using two key words "Andretti" and "Stupid"...found Mario and Michael both hitting a safety car under caution and another of Mario running over a pit crewman. Hoped to find the one where dad and son take each other out of an Indy 500.

  • they were responding to kenny brack's crash

  • In the next life we will all be restored.

  • Mario Andretti is a beast!! This wreck obviously proves that IndyCars are very safe and protect the drivers!

  • mario rocks !!! he s a great man and a great race driver ... u.s best together with a.j foyt... and michael did not had the chance in formula 1 ... he was .. i think ...fired from mclaren in an unfair way .. he should have had more time to handle the car... cheers from brasil

  • Dave Calabro is an awesome reporter! I went to preschool with his son!

  • the guy obviously knows nothing about racing..."one of the most spectacular crashes in history" you have got to be kidding....

  • uhhhh, hes a sports reporter. They usually know nothing.

  • Sports commentator.. Reporter is to big of a word :D

  • cut him a break

  • You are the BEST Mario! Love you brother! Joey O

  • That's an expensive day for the Andretti team.

  • oguldude, you're an idiot... when you 63 years old lets see you do that and say that's not a hard crash...

  • when you hit the ground you can fuck up your back

  • this is crazy!! why is HE testing?! of all people, Mario?!he's a grandpa!

  • Mario was testing for the injured Tony Kanaan.

  • yea he may b a grandpa but who cares. if he still can, he should still do it

  • pretty much only the americans think the 500 is the greatest race in the world - but its on a par with the le mans 24hours or monaco GP

  • I was there..im one of the people standing up on the top of the bleachers..that was some wicked shit! The reaction of the people there was crazy, some were like "no, not mario", others were dead silent, some sprinted to turn 2 where he stopped, and some were hammered and started yellin because they were excited they just saw a wreck, and some just missed it because it was around 6pm in indianapolis and u know what that means..last laps! haha glad it worked out ok..a moment ill never forget.

  • i remeber watching this on sportscenter and being horrified by it

  • pretty crap cameraing

  • The man up stairs?.....Maybe the man downstairs...

  • AIRPORT 2003

  • Unbelievable crash footage!!

You people can argue oval vs. road & street all you want. The fact of the matter is oval racing is hands down the most exciting and electrifying form of motorsports competition today. Lives are actually on-the-line during an oval race due to the high speeds, high banking, and increased passing. One wrong move and it could spell disaster. If you disagree, that's fine, but I think the 93 year old Indianapolis 500 is proof enough, as 250,000+ pack the place each year!

  • I like both, but on most ovals i don't find it as exciting (they just go around in ovals). But, I agree Indy is great.

  • Yeah thats tru but you cant say oval racing is the pinnacle of motor sport though, it is exciting but Michael Andretti is a great example of the different level of competition compared to F1.

  • Michael was doing what he was doing while making the rather mentally questionable decision to live in America and jet to each F1 race. That he did so well when usually so far from the team should be a better indicator. Also, Fittipaldi and Mansell came over, and neither won in their rookie year. Montoya started here, went over there, and often went out of Grands Prix with mechanical failure while in the lead, in more than enough races. I'd say the competition level equalizes when at the top.

  • My point is though Michael really wasn't up to their level, even Felipe Massa and Senna used to commute from Brazil to Europe. When you have a look at how dominating the Mclarens were from the mid 80s to the mid 90s what Michael was able to achieve is more then disappointing. His podium in the Italian GP was during a farce race and even though Marco reckons they swapped him with Mika because of salary the fact that Mika became was proven and became a double champ makes Marco just look stupid.

  • @VampireYoshi Nigel won the championship in his rookie season and fitti was long ritired in f1 when he started IndyCar. And Montoya was driving in europe for quite a while when he came to champcars.

  • @villy27 They were on the best teams by far though. A new openwheel driver could succeed in a McLaren or a Ferrari. Take Lewis Hamilton a couple of years ago.

  • Flying knight

  • AJ Foyt wouldn't have let a piece of debris send HIM airborne.

Foyt >>>>> Andretti, Petty, Earnhardt, Schumacher, etc.

  • AJ wasn't ever going that fast around a corner.

  • Ummm I believe ole AJ got taken out of one of his last Indy 500's (if not his very last) by a piece of debris on the track.

  • we finaly agree on something lol

Senna was awsome, and i think Hamilton can become what Senna was and missed out on!

  • Don't compare Hamilton with Senna.. He was gift wrapped a Great Mclaren tuned by a fine racer in Fernando Alonso. Why do you think they are spelling trouble for the new Mclaren's?? Burno Senna should have a ride!!

  • oh thats 2!?? mansell showed us how easy indy car was to master! Monotya is a bum! What i am saying is all the greatest top divers are F1 bred! fact! IE Senna,Schumacher,Häkkinen, Alonso,Räikkönen, prost, mansell, these are the men amongst men! the greatest drivers of all time came from F1 !

Why theres not as much money in indy car is because only one country watches it lol

  • Mansell was an f1 driver first,as was most of who youve mentioned!??? have you hit your head recently???

  • How many Indy drivers have won the the F1 title??? how many F1 drivers have ont the indy car title????

  • Mario Andretti won both... but Alex Zanardi said it best when racing at Michigan in Indycars. "I go in 4th gear I think this is okay you know... I go 5th gear I think, whew !! dis is like so fast eh.. then I go 6th gear and I think I could be back home in Italy fishing". Meaning, it really takes a SERIOUS set of balls to race Indy cars... Different sets of skills are needed in Indy and F1... most Indy drivers are fast in F1.. it's the braking that fouls them up. Indy doesn't use carbon brakes

  • Now days its too different to compare, the only decent examples are Montoya, who had arguably one of the fastest cars with Williams and yet didn't do as well as expected in F1 and Bordais who is just rubbish at F1. It's too much like comparing apples and oranges now.

  • again you are sighting oval tracks ! your not sighting stop starting, taking corners, accelerateing, braking etc etc if you still say an indy car beats an F1 car then your just a poor fool!

  • during the 2006 Champ Car World Series raced at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villenuve, site of the Canadian Formula 1 race, their lap times were nearly 7 seconds SLOWER then the F1 cars... (Lap Time Comparison: F1 = 1:14.942 vs. Champ Car = 1:21.856)

    OWNED.

  • don't confuse ChumpCar with real IndyCars

  • lol oh i wont,rolls eyes!

  • dont understand why indycar is still watched ??? F1 is the fastest form of racing! F1 has the greatest drivers

  • f1 is more expensive and more technical but not nearly as fast. f1 reaches 200 tops. indy cars on oval tracks can top 250 easy. people will still watch indy because it apeals to americans because most of the races are here in the usa where as f1 is entirely in forign countries anymore. f1 does have the best drivers. i favor f1 personally but would like to get into indy car too.

  • Thats where you are wrong,F1 cars on certain tracks reach 220mph,and thats on tracks with a lot of corners lol! The only reason Indy cars do 250mph is because they are geared higher ,oh and the banked oval tracks! F1 cars accelerate much faster ,pull more gees and take corners at far greater speeds! An F1 car could probably do more than 250mph if it was geared that tall! A while ago on UK TV they raced an Indy car Against an F1 car and the F1 car was lapping 6seconds a lap faster lol!

  • Its not about gearing. Its about aerodynamical drag. Indycars use much less drag, less downforce on ovals. F1, because they have a lot slow speed corners must have more downforce, thatswhy they are slower on the straights. If you tune F1 car for ovals, with less downforce, it will go faster, its smaller, its more powerful. F1 car on oval wouldn't be safe. But if we put both cars on track with current settings Indycars will outran F1 car on ovals, but be slower on roadcourses.

  • F1 is the fastest form of racing,i wish you could of seen this F1 v Indy car race that was shown on TV here in the UK ! The F1 car obliterated it lol

F1 has the best drivers, fastest cars, and the greatest tracks IMO.

  • @AJ1964 well if F1 was to run on ovals they'd redo the aero and it would be faster by far... Indy uses the same cars on road tracks, with more downforce and they are a LOT slower than F1...

  • alto vuelo

  • When Mario returned, Richard Petty was asked if he was going to return. Petty said after Mario's crash he wasn't going to race.

  • Well yep. Dallara is way better then Panoz...

  • Champcar's Panoz DP01 is way safer than the Dallara Chassis. R.I.P. Champcar

  • Well Panoz is way faster.... I dunno I don't think it's safer.

  • Panoz builds unsafe cars. Tracy got injured in slow speed accident. All drivers who died or were crippled in IRL drove Panoz. Dallara is much safer. DP01 was unsafe in ovals, because it was built cheaper.

  • @AJ1964 Exactly. Renna's crash happened before Ganassi went to Dallara. And Dana, he drove for RLR, which used Panoz for him, Buddy Rice, and Danica.

  • @AJ1964 For the record, there is 3 death in Irl. The first one being Brayton... The second one was Renna in a Dallara-Toyota, and the third one was Dana in a Panoz. Not conclusive so we might want to have a look outside IRL: Panoz is in Superleague and Dallara in GP2 and it is similar. van der Drift been injured in Superleague but Bianchi and Tung been injured in GP2.

So, it is not just the manufacturer, it is also the upkeep of the cars, the physical condition of the driver and the track.

  • well yep. you probably also think that nascar is real too.

  • HINT: Leanr more about Indy car physics. He hit debris which changed the airflow and lifted the car which then caused it to flip. The angle of the nose could not have changed it, maybe the speed but thats a different lesson.

  • HINT: DITTO!!

  • he flew

  • Nuh uh ... My '67 Chevy Impala was ... It was built like a tank .. and with it's 283 cu in engine was able to do the quarter mile in about a week and a half! ;-)

  • At least he was able to hang on to his car better than he was able to hold onto a screwdriver coated in STP ... does anybode remember those commercials from the 1960's?

  • I've seen alot of cars go airborne but this is insane!

  • The problem was, that the yellow flags did not come out fast enough, so Mario had no idea that Kenny had crashed, that's why he didn't slowed down, before hitting the debris. There is no doubt that he can be very fortuned to walk away from this accident uninjured. Btw Mario is till one heck of a driver XD

  • holy cow that car turned over like 3 or 4 times while still in the air from the initial takeoff

  • Mario is da pimp

  • What the f...? I've never seen a crash like this since Le Mans 1999.

  • are you serious? that is CRAZY!!!!!(not in a good way)

  • i wonder if he filed a flight plan ...

  • He is very very lucky. After that he realized I gotta stop before he runs out of time. When I heard and saw that crash but heart went to my stomach

  • I don't remember this at all, nor do I believe I ever saw this video. Man oh man, what a crash! I've never seen a car fly like that. Age had nothing to do with it. If Mario was 100, he'd still be better than 99.9% of the people on this post.

  • he walked away...

thank your safety cage, and a whole lot of luck.

  • whoa... unbelievable

  • worst camera man ever lol

  • lmao, your so right. Flying drunk is not smart. He couldn't keep up with Mario too haha.

  • He was in a chopper because the track is technically closed for tire testing. He was actually one of the LUCKIEST cameraman to catch the accident.

Furthermore, Mario is one of the luckiest men ever. Had that car caught the catch fence or had he landed upside down, I'm convinced that he would not be here today.

  • ya marios lucky i met him in edmonton for the champcar race last year

  • at the time if it was a closed practice or a tire test, there were no t since tcameras allowed but since the tony renna wreck there has to be cameras

  • This was a few weeks before the 500. The Renna crash happened later in the year. There was no interest.

I don't know that there is any video of the Renna crash.

  • there is no video of the renna crash but the irl made a rule after that that there has to be video at all practices

  • Gotcha. Didn't quite understand what you said.

  • Looked it up...there was no video or eyewitness to the Renna accident which happened in turn 3. Driver error was cited. Robin Miller wrote about the possibility of a bird causing the crash.

  • Somebody give me a male-enhancement pill. I can't get it up! Give it to me NOW!

  • is he sure he didnt take flying lessons.

  • I bet he filled his britches up.....

  • Ahhhh come on, age has nothing to do do with it, at 220mph he would of had the same reaction time as anyone else. seeing something come at you that fast you can't react to it fast enough. at 63, he is damn good driver for his age, and i wouldn't suprise me if he races until he dies.

  • Mario è un superman , che cazzo dici kipi19 ?

  • He is a great Driver and age has nothing to do with it , it was simply a matter of luck .I love Mario .

ps...did i mentioned i met him in person last night and had dinner together oopss :) It was the most fantastic moment ever to take a picture with him . Go Marioooooooo !

  • Lo stesso momento l'ho passato anch'io a Mid Ohio nel 1994. E'il ricordo del momento più emozionante della mia vita. VAIIII MARIO VAIIIII !!!!!

  • Shut up ya dumass. That just shows he loves it

  • Seeing the accident was hardly his fault I don't see what his age has to do with any of it.

  • look he is 63(now 67) he must know when you must stop racing.

    63 is much to old

  • I really don't think age has anything to do with race skills. Fangio won the world championship at 46 beating drivers less than half his age.

  • well it is reaction time

a 20 year old react quicker than a 63 year old

  • Granted, but I think that Mario would know that entirely and is smart enough not to risk his life for cheap thrills of high end racing. If the above crash was his fault I think he would completely reconsider his decision to race.

  • A 20+ year racing legend has better reflexes and instincts going 220 mph than any 20 year old (barring a 20 year old that is a pro driver but thats not the point of it)

  • and that one thing that makes indycar way better than all racing

  • even though this is one of the most dangerous motorsport in the world, that was one HELL of a flip!!!

  • Eh? are you sure about that? The old Hockenheim, the Barcelona pit straight, Indianapolis.. are all just as fast as monza..

  • Open Wheel racing is the summit of racing.

    Nothing compares.

40mph faster than NASCAR and they are not 'Taxi Cabs playing Bumper cars for 5 hours of yellow flag'

  • There have been a couple
