  • wow excelent !

  • if its only doing it when warmed up it could be a rod or main bearing problem :(. a loose TQ would be clunking at any temp.

it really does sound like a rod or main bearing knock at this stage :(

is there a lot of metal on the sump plug or in the oil filter?

if you weren't in the over seas I'd offer you my good short block to play with

  • @Aussie50

Ive got to replace the rear main output seal and oil pan gasket this or next month, Ill try and have a look up by the crankshaft to see if theres any visible indication on the rods or bearings of damage

I just did an oil change a few weeks ago, and ive gotten no metal shavings in the filter or drained oil

And yea its unfortunate you live all the way in Australia, im always watching yours and Brads videos, they never get boring hahaa

  • @serge933 glad you like out vids :D

if you can drop the pan and push on each rod/main and see if its loose it would help. short of removing caps and visually inspecting them. only do that if you have a good torque wrench to replace the bolts with.

try taking a large long screw driver (16" heavy ones work well) and use it like a stethoscope. hole the end of the handle against your ear and touch the side of the block with the metal end while its running. should help pin point where noise is,.

  • @Aussie50

Yea definatly im gonna give that a try, and even probably removing each of the caps, I do have a good torque wrench so ill give that a try. Problem on these E32s is the main cross member completely blocks the oil pan from coming out unless you left the engine up a slight bit :\

If it is a rod, how hard do you think it would be to replace one of those withought completely pulling out the entire engine?

Im gonna try the stethascope idea later today

  • @serge933 the rods run bearing shells so that should not be a problem, but if the crank shaft is scored or worn under size it will be a engine out job anyway :(

have a look, but don't hold me to it.

  • @Aussie50

Ah alright, and ill definatly have a look at it as soon as I can, hopefully sometime this month. I appreciate the help and keep those videos of yours coming!

  • what it sound like in gear and under load

  • @V8Jagnut

In neutral it sounds pretty loud, but in gear it seems to get slightly quieter and as soon as you push on the throttle in gear, the knocking sound disapears. It happens only when the engine is at operating temperature

    Thanks

  • sounds bad :(. hope its not rod knock.

could be a loose torque converter or cracked drive plate tho. I would pop the inspection cover off first and check it.

  • @Aussie50

Im really hoping its not that either, but that has been one of my major worries, it got better after adding another quart of oil which is odd since it took 2 more quarts than normal this oil change

And sorry but waht do you mean by inspection cover?

And it happens after the car warms up

    Thanks
