The Abwehr, German Army intelligence, underestimated Soviet reserves by 75% from the start! Most of the German army was tied to horses, foot & railroads which severely impeded mobility. Even the Soviets had a higher % of mechanized & motorized infantry.

@xmarks97 Actually the Soviet technology wasn't that bad, and they far out produced the Germans too. Their T-34, JS-1 SU-152 tanks were almost as good as the Germans & lots more too. Their Sturmovik ground attack planes were better than the obsolete Ju 87s. Don't forget most of the Soviet losses were in 1941 which were a result of Stalin's stupidity & cruelty. Stalin didn't believe the Nazis were going to attack and earlier killed off his best military men earlier.

@xmarks97 To say that the T-34 was the best tank during the war is insane! The German Panther outperformed the T-34, because it had a better gun, better armor and was very reliable for the commanders and the crew of the tank.

They were held up in their (first) winter in Russia but in the next spring they again dominated most battles. It was a widely popular notion in the German High Command that the communist government would collapse like a house of cards under the immense pressure of the invasion. This proved to be far from the truth.
Germany should have done this or that. That's like saying if only France had a better plan in 1940 they never would have lost so quick or if Stalin had done this or that then Germany would have been stopped in 1941. Germany started the war, they and the other axis powers did not have what it takes to defeat the allies. They were not good enough, period.
5) Germany should have invaded Ireland instead of mainland Britain to further strangle hold her from her empire.
6) The huge pro-national movement in India (British Raj) which lead to independence a few short years after the war (1947) made it quite possible for the Germans to gain support there making Britain commit more forces to protect it from revolution or advancing Japanese (or both)
Germany lost basically because of a few very bad decisions.. example: Invading the Soviet Union before Britain was defeated. Huge mistake, and also concentrating so many forces on the Battle of Stalingrad instead of taking the oil fields south of the city. And of course, Germany was outnumbered and their ally Italy was probably the weakest country in the war besides France, Japan was not helpful at all and they brought the USA into the war giving Germany a hard time.
Japan and Germany were allies, Japan's attack on pearl harbour caused America to declare war on Japan. Germany then declared war on the USA for declaring war on their allies. If Nazi Germany had decided to in fact, nullify their alliance with Japan at that point, whether America would have wanted to commit forces to the war in Europe?

Then there is a well known fact that several of his most important retainers systematically lied to him, specially about Normandy.
The reason why is simple. The Battle of Britain failed, crushing the Luftwaffe, and trying an amphibious assault against an enemy with air superiority is suicide so operation sealion was abandoned.
This was also why the Normandy landings were successful. If the Nazi's controlled the skies the Blitzkrieg tactic would still have been very much effective which is what allowed the outnumbered and outgunned Germans to roll up the entire western front in 2 weeks to begin with.
The only reason the Soviets could win is because Stalin was literally a ruthless killer who could churn out endless amounts of soldiers and forced labor in factories, as well as call on endless oil and material reserves, with no second front or international conspiracy against him to worry about.
That's a strategic advantage every general would wet his pants to have.
He'd have to have been an IDIOT not to be able to win the war.

Germany deserves more credit militarily than any other modern country, ever.
The fact that they managed to hold out as well as they did, for as long as they did, against so many simaltaneous enemies, is a testament to their bravery, courage, resolve, and skill at arms.
The US on the other hand, had the world's best and largest military, and couldn't win against jungleboys with AK's in Vietnam, and can't win against "terrorists" in Afghanistan.

Allies did do 1 thing, tho, provide info on German troops movements and attack plans.

There are two reasons the Germans lost. One was that Hitler was stubborn and refused to retreat. The Wehrmacht could of broken out of Stalingrad once they saw they were being surrounded, but Hitler refused. And the second is that they couldn't match the military production of the United States.

For two reason (1) There allies sucked. Italy was not ready for war by any means,and Japan didn't give a rat *** about Germany and didn't help them. (2) They attacked Russia when they were already fighting the allies, so his resources were cut in half, he simply didn't have enough manpower to deal with both.

@xmarks97 While that is a good point, the Germans would have lost anyways. Russia was just too big, had too primitive a road net, and too many soldiers. The Abwehr, German Army intelligence, underestimated Soviet reserves by 75% from the start! Most of the German army was tied to horses, foot & railroads which severely impeded mobility. Even the Soviets had a higher % of mechanized & motorized infantry.

@xmarks97 Actually the Soviet technology wasn't that bad, and they far out produced the Germans too. Their T-34, JS-1 SU-152 tanks were almost as good as the Germans & lots more too. Their Sturmovik ground attack planes were better than the obsolete Ju 87s. Don't forget most of the Soviet losses were in 1941 which were a result of Stalin's stupidity & cruelty. Stalin didn't believe the Nazis were going to attack and earlier killed off his best military men earlier.

Then again, if they had taken Leningrad from the start, they could have opened up a supply line using the Baltic then cut off Murmansk & Archangel. It woudl have been easier to drive to Moscow since the best roads were between Leningrad & Moscow. Or if they tried to trick & use the Red hating Russians & Jews, they could have had many more helpers.

So i would say the Panther was the best, even tho they where expensive to produce, and they where outnumbered by the Soviets t-34 and the American Sherman.

He didn't knock out the Brits when he had the chance. He couldn't comprehend why the British would declair war after his invasion of Poland. He held British culture in high regard, and wished to make peace with them. When that failed he had Goering squander the Luftwaffe's resources on bombing cities with heavy losses, instead of focusing on the RAF and Radar stations. Imagine if the US had to invade Nazi held Britain and then move on to continental Europe.

2) Having to take on the responsibilities of Italy.
3) Vast industrial and resource base of the US. Germany had to use synthetic oil from coal due to failure to secure Soviet oil fields.
4) Overestimated its own strengths (Master Race) and underestimated its enemies (subhuman Slavs - self indulgent Brits and Yanks).
5) Never went on a war time economy soon enough. German civilians did not have to make the sacrifices as Allied ones until much later.

@jeffhaer actually it took the british emprie and the french (with very very late help froim the USA) to defeat germany the first time. its only a world war because england called in so many colonies for troops, and they spanned the globe. WW2 is a real world war where it wasnt only fought in europe or the middle east. plus more contries joined in on WW2. germany was always going to be be beaten in both. it didnt have the right allies. you seem to think germany went it alone both times

i'm not an expert or anything but i think the answers here are all partially correct. in 1939 Hitler had a tech edge but he wasted it. He should have (a) listined to his generals and (b) forget stalingrad take Moscow asap. Germany won key battles and the Bolshvik leaders were not very popular so taking out Stalin would have been the end. It's like that for dicatators. Since they both pledged to help Poland if attacked, Hitler was still not listening. Attacked Poland. Then came France and Britain. If he didn't attack Poland, he could've allied with France and Britain to attack Communist Russia... Finish Russia. Then he would break the alliance, destroy France like he did, and take over rest of Europe.

When they signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact, Germany agreed to give the Eastern half of Poland to Russia in return that the Soviet Union don't attack Germany and vice versa. I don't feel like making sure my facts are correct, I'm hoping you'll correct me but I'm pretty sure Russia didn't attack Poland. I'm pretty sure Germany took all of Poland, then gave the land they promised Russia.

@freakyflow The german army did NOT attack in the winter. They invaded the soviet union in spring and made a swift push into russia. They were held up in their (first) winter in Russia but in the next spring they again dominated most battles. Hitlers problem was invading the soviet union at all as they were alot more powerful than he believed, and 1943-45 showed this.

hitler should have let his generals decide the strikes etc in example russia on the eastenfront, he did to many misstakes there, and they did not get enough of material (oil from the kaukasusarea, which was ment to be taken over by army South)
also, thank god that the allied could enter france in 1944, else it would have taken years until they could perform such an invasion, wich could let the german move their troops in france (around 600000) to the eastenfront. + had to help italy

That would have been just silly. It is a little more complicated than that I am afraid. The major reason why they did not manage to crush the Soviet Union was poor strategic decisions made by Hitler. And then there is the gross underestimation of the capabilities of the communist government. It was a widely popular notion in the German High Command that the communist government would collapse like a house of cards under the immense pressure of the invasion. This proved to be far from the truth.

Taking British territories would have been easy while the Brits were throwing everything at Germany.
2) Thus making Spain more likely to join and reclaim Gibraltar which would yet further isolate Malta and British controlled North Africa.
3) Argentina could have been persuaded to take the Falkland islands.
4) No attack on Pearl harbor would have meant many nations would still have been selling supplies to Axis powers.

Germany lost basically because of a few very bad decisions.. example: Invading the Soviet Union before Britain was defeated. Huge mistake, and also concentrating so many forces on the Battle of Stalingrad instead of taking the oil fields south of the city. And of course, Germany was outnumbered and their ally Italy was probably the weakest country in the war besides France, Japan was not helpful at all and they brought the USA into the war giving Germany a hard time.

The reason why is simple. The Battle of Britain failed, crushing the Luftwaffe, and trying an amphibious assault against an enemy with air superiority is suicide so operation sealion was abandoned.
This was also why the Normandy landings were successful. If the Nazi's controlled the skies the Blitzkrieg tactic would still have been very much effective which is what allowed the outnumbered and outgunned Germans to roll up the entire western front in 2 weeks to begin with.
