I understand where u coming from but i been a long time user of all windows and slowly converting over to linux and going to make a server in my house linux base . Open source is good and programing etc . windows is meh i will always use but need a alternative . Now you can almost do everything on unbuntu if not more . I use xp,vista , and work on win 7 for my job . I like to not have all that extra bs that windows has to run . I like running and learning new things
Unbuntu can be installed like a program in windows, and when you boot you just select what you want windows or linux, or you can try it direct from cd without installing
Ye i hate how people think that an OS is made for USEABILITY instead of graphical nonsense. The most important factor of a computer system is nonsense and having a total lack of real life so you can spend all your time in the utter and complete nonsense to configure or even just setup your computer. We love that when an OS gets updated from 10.0 to 10.1 and having to lose the ability to run your network driver :D
@Lutherkb: Actually, what Linux and free software do best is to give the power back to the user. Linux is highly customisable and very flexible. Try it out for yourself. Download the Ubuntu cd image and burn it. You can try Linux without ever having to install it! Cheers :)
I've used many distributions but not one has made me go, oh gee, I should drop Mac OS(unix based remember) or Windows 7(at work) for Linux.
I support open-source, am an IT man by education and trade but to be quite honest, I've zero love for Linux because 8 or so years ago when I first played with it and looking at it again recently, NOTHING has really changed. Hardware support has gotten a bit better yes but it's still the same, limited in its relativity to the average user.
Quoting myself, "I support open-source, am an IT man by education and trade but to be quite honest, I've zero love for Linux because 8 or so years ago when I first played with it and looking at it again recently, NOTHING has really changed. "
I'm talking most specifically about Linux for the home user and I understand that most Linux derivatives are not for the home user. Ubuntu comes closest but even that sucks. The support is shody at best based on forums full of self-proclaimed gurus who rarely know the answer and instead consistently attempt to spoon-feed the same crap answer to the end users.
Choices are great but when the choices are so numerous the end-user is stuck not knowing how to proceed, there is a problem. Not only does the end user have about a billion flavors to choose from, he must also then choose between two different desktop systems both of which are similar but not quite the same.
What if Linux were more like this...three serious distros, say Fedora, Debian, and something like Ubuntu. Let's all sit down, a choose between KDE and GNOME, say KDE wins. now, how about all of that developing talent that is now NOT being wasted on the distros focuses on developing these three into actual serious products with REAL hardware support and compatibility. Perhaps with Debian as the server-grade, fedora for the office, a ubuntu (ugh) as whatever/home...
Unfortunately for the most it is. I'm all for linux, hell i run it on my server and agree that in the correct circumstances and for the correct person it works awesome.
But give it to someone like my sister, mum, or even most of my mates and they'll be stumped.
As for myself i do test the odd distro from time to time on a spare lappy but i simply game too much on my main one to install it on it.
@niallgraham07@GloriousOtaku I don't think so, even my completely tech illiterate mother managed to install Ubuntu on her own. She uses an refurbished 8 year old Computer with Mandriva installed, without any fuss. And I keep supplying relatives and acquaintances with 2nd hand computers, all run some Linux with the latest eyecandy.
@niallgraham07 Well, you only need to show them some basic stuff, eg. where is "the internet", the chat, office, image programs, how they can access their files and camera etc.
The only difference is installing software, but some app-store like interface is much easier for them than searching for suitable programs on the net, especially since that is the source of most malware and headache.
But you have to know the spectrum of distros and apps quite well to choose the easiest of them.
Linux isn't bad if you want to customize every single aspect of your system to your likings, but for the general consumer it's simply too in depth.
Never mind trying to teach a non-techie to install a program under linux, it would be mental!!
Oh and i've tried several linux distros for months, the driver support for pure performance on a good setup simply isn't up to speed with W7, it get's destroyed every time.
Very well done! Vista7 shall we call it is an abortion all to itself. The developers of Longhorn almost got the multiple cubes going, but they never have accumulated the genius of LINUX. This video is very good. You just happen to make it look like Vista Aero. The only perturbing thing of Linux is that it has so much customization you'll be changing the feel, and love it every time. I don't hate windows anything, just I've tested the waters with Linux and I've not gone back. Keep up the genius!!
I would not say linux, that team "did not" have any thing to do with this, it was Novell with there AIGLX and Red Hat with there XGL (or was it the outher way around?) and the Compiz and Beryl team.
not "Linux" you can run this on most *nix systems with Xorg [with XGL or AIGLX] and 3D drivers...
well it sounds as if you think linux is just another program that you install into windows its not remember way back when you first got your comp and you had to install the cd so that you could use it
that cd installed the OS windows and linux is another OS short for operating system
linux is much more stable than windows and high customizable but if you do not have much computer knowledge it could be kind of complicated to do simple things in windows like installing a program
@ReinaDelCid yes, you should say hardware; linux is free, you don't need money to have it but surelly you need a good hardware to take that effects ando some others like the burning cursor ;)

3d cubes aren't just for flashy effects -- I use the cube as a task bar replacement.
Its much faster to flip your workspace in 3d then it is to find your application in the taskbar.
Perhaps you are looking for TWM - Tiny Window Manager, that should give you the 1980's minimalistic window manager feel that you desire.
