I love how the Japanese, make use of their hi tech researches on helping the population, instead of other countries which would use it as a machine war. Greetings from Argentina.
Cool but way to slow and unnatural moving, it needs to be more efficient if its ever going to be applied to anything meaningful, otherwise its just a "cool experiment".
@rusho2nd It seems that there's one cable that's always plugged, most likely the power supply. The other cable seen in this video (white box/blue cable) may not be required and looks like a JTAG cable
in all seriousness some one could take over the world with this crap.imagine japan 10 years later with life size robots and stuff all it takes is one person to infect them all with some crazy virus that makes them kill people =/
@Mouzerr - And scale it down multiple times to create networks of various sized nodes to handle different tasks and to coordinate for larger tasks. Imagine a larger version deploying tens of these. Then each one of these allowing tens of smaller ones to crawl out and around to do... whatever.
Doctor octopus? or Metal gear solid? just ad a technique that makes it minimize and expand like Transformers, or how about fly/hover through the air UFO!!!!
we've just spent 10 million creating this electronic spider, it will be able to go into dangerous places and do all sorts of investigation.....just AS LONG as there is this guy holding the remote control connected BY WIRES 2 a couple of feet behind. Ever heard of wireless?? losers...
@AX53B60 Fair enough. But you cant tell me this same device in toy story with the doll head didnt make you piss your pants everytime it crawled out from under the bed
What I don't like is that it feels like every company is developing their own version of robotics, as opposed to them all working together to create on advanced on. :/
@FrostGibbon WEll no, because that means that they will develope movement and coordination all simultaneously, instead of doing all the research into one perfect movement system.
@1MadVirus1 No such thing as a perfect movement system, just like there's no perfect car or computer. Competition keeps everyone pushing it to the next level. If your product is better than everyone else's people will pay big bucks for it.
That is a very kick ass design. However, I'd like to see how well it runs if it's powered by a battery (right now its fed by an external power source via the black and red wires). The extra weight of the battery can be very significant.
0:12 next pick up a Human and rip their head off... argh!!!

So all that work... and you couldnt make it wireless? or is it wireless but your just using a cord for some other reason?

@rusho2nd it's just a beta version.....is not full completed.....it's obisly....

Even if it is beta, its 2011, its not hard to make it wireless from the get go.

@GFmanaic
Hmm, so then it doesnt have a sufficient on board power supply? or was this just for demonstration?
rusho2nd 3 weeks ago
@rusho2nd I think it can run on battery but the autonomy would be too short for the demo.

anyone else thinking that one day this will be created many times it's size and be an all-terrain tank, a Metal Gear (in a sense)?

@RangeTE17 As Wild Wild West showed us, giant steam-powered spiders are badass, but not practical.

I can see these things handling custodian duties, in addition to military and search & rescue missions...Very cool. It should be called "Hexcrabot."
Imagine these things had mines attached to them and a 100 or so were deployed onto a battlefield...scary!
