@zblog68 When the humidor is not ready to receive the cigars, a good way to temporarily store them is to put them in sealable plastic bags with Humi Packs or refillable humidifiers called water pillows.
You caught me I'm the Headless Horseman taking a break form terrorizing people lol.
In your opinion do you think wetting/wiping detachable items (i.e. trays/dividers) can speed up the process and "safer" (i.e. better than wiping down the interior cedar walls and floors)?
@shotokun16 Well if you only plan on wiping down the dividers and/or trays, yes this could speed up and still be "safe" for the seasoning process. By how much... not sure... could be a few hours or half of a day or even a day sooner depending on the humidor size, the quality of wood, etc. Also by wiping down the tray/divider could ruin the wood those are made out of but, that is up to the person if they care to potentially risk the quality of that wood or not.
I'm in the process of seasoning my humidor following the instructions that came with it (shotglass method). I've notice that in the first 3 days the humidity has been at 72% lowest and up to 87% highest. The temp is around 81 degrees reading. That is too high. I've been storing my humidor under my bed so my kids don't get curious and bump it. My house temp is around 74 to 75 deg. Why is my humidor temp so high?
@sworn2prtcusa2002 There can be a few reasons for this so I'm going to ask a few questions; 1) Where do you live? 2) What level of the house are you storing this in? 3) Is it reading 81 degrees with the humidity in the 80s? 4) Lastly, is there just the shot glass inside your humidor now?
@goodfellascigar ok I live in Orlando, FL. I live in a 3rd floor apartment. for the most part it has been in my bedroom under my bed, with the exception of me sliding it out just to check the readings. glasstop humidor by the way. Currently right now its reads 90% humidity 75 degrees. And right before my first posting I changed it from a shotglass to one of those little plastic sauce bowls you get in a Chinese restaurant. also the puck humidifier is inside.
@sworn2prtcusa2002 Ok the reason it can be higher than normal is because you on a 3rd floor of the building usually lower levels of buildings are the best place to store a humidor but, there is much you can do for that so I suggest to get gel beads or the tubes we mention in this video. The pads are nice but, I usually like to stay away from them for the simple fact you always after to buy the solution for them which can build up with cost over time and the nicer thing about the gel beads is...
@goodfellascigar I'll stop in Corona Cigar store tonight and pick up a 70% 2 oz xikar jar. I think this is all they carry. Is that the same thing as what you use? Also will this help drop the temp?
@sworn2prtcusa2002 I use bead tubes currently in mine but, I have friends that use the Xikar Gel Jars and they work great. Once the humidity starts getting near stable levels and once the whole seasoning process is done the temperature should drop to where it is normal which is either right around the humidity of a seasoned humidor or slightly higher as what I said before. So it'll take a little time now but, it should drop. The big thing one has to remember is all humidors are different.
@sworn2prtcusa2002 they take distilled water which is under a buck to get and it last quite some time especially since you live in a more humid climate you will have to refill less often then dryer climates. After you have got gel or tubes then place either the gel beads or the tube inside with the saucer then remove saucer after a few hours keeping the gel or tube inside, this will bring down the humidity because the gel or tube will be dry and "thirsty". You will prob have to watch it over the
@sworn2prtcusa2002 next few days to see where the humidity level is reading. Your going to want to get it to the lower 70s and then add your cigars then. As for the temperature low 70s usually under 75 is fine your temperature. It will read usually higher than your humidity by anywhere from 2 to 5 higher so don't be alarmed they don't have to match each other. Any more questions feel free to ask.
You didn't mention how you calibrate your hygrometer, you weren't specific as to *why* you use distilled water, and you didn't mention if/when/how you added water to your Heartfelt beads. It's a decent video, but if you're educating, you can't assume people will know these things and glaze over important details.
@LonelyRavenProductio We have just now added the link in our video on how to calibrate a hygrometer. As for saying why we used distilled water we mentioned it about twice in our video but, as for the reason we use it is because it has no minerals or other impurities inside of it compared to regular tap water. We want that (distilled) because we don't want any minerals or impurities transferring into the humidor wood because it can damage the wood therefore making the humidor one just bought..
@goodfellascigar@LonelyRavenProductio useless. As for if/when/how we added water to our Heartfelt bead tubes we mentioned that they were very basic instructions on the packaging for them. For the future though we will make a video on how to fill and refill a Heartfelt bead tube and place it within this video. Sorry for any confusion.
So we don't need to wipe it at all? I'm starting to think that the whole wiping thing is more like a myth! I have seem a few other videos that doesn't wipe either.
@CanecaProductions You are absolutely correct. Wiping maybe one of the worst things a person can do while seasoning a humidor or really ever. Applying water directly to the wood runs the risk of causing damage to the humidor. This damage may consist of the wood warping causing the seal of the lid to not be as tight and the joints of the humidor shifting. This in turn causes the humidor, basically a wooden box, have too much airflow and defeats the purpose of the humidor.
Where do the cigars go when doing this thanks??? Sorry I'm new to this.. And where is your head. Thanks
