@fusionfreakdrummer You don't have to play intensely complex music for it to sound good, Bonham had a unique style and a perfect feel for rock and roll. You don't get it, that's fine.
@bcbcbcbcdc well my good man, because bonham was a great drummer for his time! drums have evolved, the why there made, the way there played etc. bonham was a self taut some what limited of a drummer hence the simple tom work that made him famous AT THAT TIME! consider this, there were amazing jazz drummers that would blow minds all thru the 60's 70's and no one admires them like they do bonham....why? because it's easy to mimic a simple minded aproach to a complex instrument!
@bcbcbcbcdc I feel, one should admire many approach's, but never stay simple and stagnated. push the limit's of the creative mind and allow your body as a drummer to react and evolve the instrument.....
You have a lot to learn about tuning one of these big 26" kicks, kid. Check out 'GrooveDrummin' on YouTube for proper tuning on one of these babies. If you're going for the Bonham sound, I would highly recommend checking out GrooveDrummin's DVD available for sale. For about 12$ you will learn how to tune the whole kit properly... pay attention!!
@drummar77 There's more than one way to tune a 26". Dan Zalac (GrooveDrummin) goes for a more focused tone like John Bonham did, but this guy clearly says that he is looking for a more open tone. I personally loved the sound of the drum ih this video.
I think that this drum might just have a little too much resonance. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound, but I feel that the pitch bend kills it. Maybe just try to get the resonant head a little bit more in tune with itself and you will be surprised by the sound
Love the sound! But soundguys hate it. And you know what to say to these soundguys, "I pay you so you do what I tell you to do!!" These fnkn soundguys are the main reasons why drummers & bands sound so alike these days, time to stand up to them & tell them to fuck off!!
who could dislike this video?! that's such a classic sound. the 26" kicks have such a wide tonal spectrum unlike smaller kicks. it's beautiful and very musical.
@xAxnikxlinxAx I do the opposite on my maple and Vistalite Bonham kits - I tuned the batter head up and the front head fairly loose. Gives me the punch I like with no boominess.
@xAxnikxlinxAx Many ways of tuning a bass drum, mr. It all boils down to what your own preferences are. Its like me telling you how to drive your car. It just aint none of my business.
that bass drum sounds amazing without the felt strips. in nearly every drum recording the bass drum doesn't match up at all with the toms when it comes to sustain, nor does it sound like a drum at all, rather than just... some sort of bass-effect. i do not know who declared this to be a cool thing to teach at producer high school.

Sorry you have to deal with all these kids trying to tell 'you' how to tune 'your' kit in 'your' experiment.

Seriously...... There is no tuning to this.... Wide open is easy to accomplish.... That is not the Bonham sound....

A felt strip on both heads would kill just the right amount of overtone. Even Bonham used a little dampening.

Pure sex. I love the boomy bass drums & that fits the bill. It's why Bonzos drums always sounded so "big".
Good job.

@xAxnikxlinxAx that's exactly how I tune mine. batter is really low and resonant is really high It sounds great that way.

I can tell that it sounds like sex in person. It's probably the compression on the camera mic.
