This is such a beautiful Christmas song, and the arrangement by Mannheim Steamroller is so incredible. I could listen to this arrangement a thousand times and still be moved by it.
musicappreciate: this really isn't "modern Christmas music" - Veni, veni, Emmanuel was written in the ninth century and later translated into English! The setting is, of course, modern. I like the Enya version, myself.

just spent 1/2 and hour looking for this version... I've heard it somewhere else and the other renditions just can't do it such sweet and graceful justice.... I adore this in the Latin chant... mil gracias y feliz navidad
This is such a beautiful song~! We're actually playing this song in my strings orchestra class at school~! (A shorter version, though, of course~! X3)
And the best part is that I get to play the beginning and end as a soli with the Violas~!! (But it sounds more like a Cello solo because the Violas kinda suck~! XDD They're too quiet.)
Veni Veni Emmanuel Captivum Solve Israel Qui Gemit In Exilio Privatus Dei Filio Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuel, Nascetur Pro Te, Israel! Veni, veni, O Oriens; Solare nos adveniens, Noctis depelle nebulas, Dirasque noctis tenebras. Veni, Clavis Davidica! Regna reclude caelica; Fac iter tutum superum, Et claude vias inferum.
This is my favorite Christmas song. I love the words and the music. For the longest time I could not reconcile the bright exuberance of the message with the lugubrious, somber- sounding music. But then it occurred to me that the song speaks of a downtrodden Mankind desperate, dispirited people hanging on with a dwindling hope of salvation. Recall the American forces freeing the Jewish people from the death camps. There was no raucous celebration by the prisoners, only tears of joy.
This song makes me think about what jesus did for us. It makes me think about no matter what i have done in my life because of jesus i am forgivn. I think there is a special place in all our hearts that belongs too Jesus. It reminds us that we are free. Free to worship him no matter what. In the world today im most proud to be a follower of our savior. My only wish in life is that when i meet him face to face his words are,"My son James, with you i am pleased. I will work for that always.
It is not a song but a prayer. gregorian chant is prayer through chant, but it is not singing, the guitar remix here was added to give it a more modern feel.. This is a prayer for israel to have hope in the lord for salvation is near.
This is the most beautiful version of this Christmas Hymn that starts the Advent Season in preparation of Our Lord's Birth...the reason i like this version the best...because growing up in the 50's and being a altar boy, i can remember our choir singing like this...they do not do this anymore...something so beautiful was lost, but, thanks for the post as i can enjoy the old days when people prayed and you had joy going to church..God Bless You All !!
I agree with you. I understand much of the reasoning behind some of the things they tried to do after the second Vatican council, but in many cases they went too far. Something beautiful was indeed lost...
I agree with 'musicappreciate' - Chip Davis revitalized the Christmas musical landscape with not only superb and memorable renditions of classical and traditional Christmas melodies, but took it a step further and brought to us the olde style of music into the modern era...god bless Chip and MS ...and YouTube!!
this is how the song orginally went as it was a monastary chant
