To be fair to Wetton, after dealing with Robert Fripp for several years he probably just wanted to have some fun. Too bad that the only other musician on the stage who seems to want to interact with him is Byron; Ken Hensley's expression is just poisonous throughout this, and Mick Box looks like he's trying to remember if he shut off the gas before he left the house.
Wonder how many of the people commenting here were even alive when this performance was recorded. But don't let that stop you from trying to sound like you were there....Anyway, Uriah Heep varied widely in their performances due in large part to David's pre-concert "preparations". This version was horrible and they did much better at other shows from this time. Sped up versions of songs were de rigeur for many bands at this time so its not like this was unique to UH.
I love Heep in all its incarnations, but this is truly awful and it isn't just because of the sound quality. This is a phoned-it-in performance for sure. It is too fast, the keyboards are off, and Byron is obviously toasted. It is no surprise he was canned shortly after this performance. A very sad clip to watch, at least for me.
Man. Oh man. I never knew Geddy Lee and Freddie Mercury were in Uriah Heep................. Just Joking. But come on, Dave is acting a bit strange on this show. I love Heep. So I glad I found this clip.

This is a VERY GOOD performance of Sweet Lorraine, with a fast tempo which is fit for arena rock and a great work form both Box and Kerslake, The sound captured is very bad, nevertheless. Kerslake' synth and Box's guitar are too loud, Byron is totally undertaked by the mass fo noise. I can hear Wetton and it seems OK.

From about 4:03 to 4:30 - massively awesome Hammond with guitar wah wah going on. I miss Ken Hensley. He was the other voice of Heep, a fine singer in his own right and a fantastic song writer and bottle neck guitarist. (I always wanted his hair!) I saw parts of his reunion with Heep, but he did not sing. I hope his voice is okay. Can anyone recommend his latter day albums, The Last Dance or Cold Autumn Sunday?
This sounds as a pretty unique and moving band, for none of the musicians were afraid of simplicity and their luminous wall of sound approach sounds like nothing on Earth. Mick Box guitar reminds me of Helios Creed, in fact. Most solo-less guitar hero of his era. Lee Kerslake drumming is so punchy and direct, it reminds me of Paul Cook.
plus, the sad fate of certain members and the decline of the "togetherness" of the band makes this music a poignant one from our point of view.
I like Uriah Heep's use of the organ in their music. If people don't mind me comparing them to Deep Purple, I think Heep's approach to the organ fits more naturally, while Purple's was too dominant. I love the music of both bands, with the reservation that Deep Purple uses the organ too much.
I actually like this! I always thought the studio and Live 73 versions were a bit slow, to be honest. Vocals here could be higher mixed, but only a minor quip. THANK YOU for sharing this, most sincerely!
The band was disintegrating at this time, Byron was soon fired and no one was really communicating with one another. It was all downhill after this. Hensley left a few years later, they plod along to this day but never to reclaim the glory days of Look At Yourself, Demons and Wizards or Magicians Birthday.
Byron was out of control by 76 and it's a shame he couldn't keep it together, a great wasted talent.

como me hace recordar de mis tiempos mozos cuando andaba en la aventura en el ferrocarril de mexico cuando existia y con mi grabadorsota escuchando a este exelente grupo ,los amo uriah heep
knowing a very special person whose name is Lorraine, this song got my atttention to "Uriah Heep' and "Magician's Birthday albumn. Someone needs to fire the tech, David Byron's voice is fantastic, so why does his mic suck! It isn't raining! Kenslake's drum's merge into a single sound, amazing and ferocious temp with the cymbol/drum melody. Ken Hensly's signature synthisieer is otherworldly awesome! and anyone that says different doesn't know music.
Something very GAY is going on here. It's strange what lead singers will do live on stage. I saw a lot of groups growing up, and i was shocked when i saw behavior like this. (^_^)
Okay, that was.... frightening. Can we leave now? That synth patch has me-- confused and a little nauseated. His outfit. Yellow. And where's the rest of it. Be cool dude. In a few years they will invent the Gay Pride parade, and you can just strut yer stuff there. I was 17 that year, and saw lots of concerts-- plenty as bad as this mess. Poor Wetton. Gotta pay the bills, mate. F+
Actually I think this is an incredible over the top version (with the bass largely inaudible of course). Wetton did it because he needed the work (and money) after Crimson. Ken Hensley searched far and wide for the ugliest synth sound he could find and you know what? He found it! Pity poor dead Gary Thain. Troll King Mick Box rocks on...

David Byron was without a doubt the worst singer in rock history. A great showman yes, singer no. Bernie Shaw, who has sung with the group since 86 is far superior.

They were both great showmen. The sound quality on this is not great and you have to remember David was drinking heavily at this time...I think that is obvious here...and speaking as someone who saw him live in 1973...I find this video so sad
Byron was always a prima donna- even before Freddie Mercury made it on the scene. He was always this cheesy. His vocals obviously don't compare to FMs.
Why did David Byron the lead vocalist leave the band? In my opinion they ceased being Uriah Heep after he left just like Van Halen ceased being important after they dropped David Lee Roth. Peace.
After what I read (I think it was in the notes from Two Decades in Rock) Byron got kicked because he told the audience to go f*ck themselves when he had an accident on stage.
Which was the result of him drinking too much. As I recall the incident you're talking about was like the final straw, but apparently the preceding couple years it had been building up to that.
Yes it is Wetton playing on this video. Gary Thain played the bass on the studio version, but he died in 1975 so unless he was resurrected from the dead...
Heey, bedankt voor deze post. Had toentertijd een cassetterecorder tegen de tv gehangen en jaren met veel plezier naar de tape geluisterd tot ie helemaal dun en uitgerekt was.
I love Mercury but... Byron was in a 'higher league', mate! Maybe this video is not the best prove of it (his drinking problems were well known before that) but listen to ALL his stuff... He, definitelly, makes the top, fucking, three, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan and Dave Byron. A-maaan...
yeah, the Byron-Box 'exchange' isn't doing much for the song, but that just goes w/o saying. and the keyboards are seriously leaving something to be desired. someone please, blow them up. Wetton looks miserable... and ridonkulously desperate, down on his knees. i can only imagine that there is a lot of booze and "candy" involved here. movin' on...
haha. Wetton... 'phoning it in.' poor guy needed a new pair of jeans. i think he was looking for a new house at this time, too. amidst the other assorted 'alleged' debauchery going on, i smell heavy drinking! (p.s. i'm a Wetton fan, just not a fan of this particular choice of 'vehicle') cheers!
first off: i love John Wetton. and i have no problem with the man being down on his knees... but not here
the man has a stellar resume. this... is... just not adding to it. but i believe he got a house out of this (his tenure with the Heep). so, i guess... sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...
He was never a real member of Roxy Music, he only played live with them. In terms of worldwide success, the only other band Wetton was a member of and could compare to Uriah Heep was Asia.
Well, I really tried to come up with something witty about 'Heep being the greatest band Wetton ever played in' (definitely too!!), but with that mind melting synth organ sound in my ears, I just can't think of anything... duh!
Alright, you definitely have the right not to like the Heep... Likewise, we have the right to adore Ken Hensley's "mind melting organ" and David Byron's falsetto vocals. Enough said, Uriah Heep rules!
OK GreekPicker, I don't wan't to pick a fight with you over Uriah Heep... actually I like the Heep, but this was certainly a low point in their career (and it's not Wetton's fault)
I really admire your passion for Uriah Heep (my debut concert experience)
hey, PVR! let's toast some marshmallows over that fire :) can never get enough of that! i doubt that anyone participating in this performance remembers being there anyway, so, in the end probably not even worth discussing/debating. as we all know, John toured with ROXY (and solo Ferry). he even made a few promo vids with them. Viva! Roxy! at any rate, i'm sticking to my guns in believing that JW was more a 'member' of ROXY than he ever was whilst in Heep. but clearly, the Crimson King reigns!
I`m glad they don`t do that shit with the elevated stage anymore. For most of the time the band is playing to each other and if you happen to be somewhere in front, after the show you`ll go home with a broken neck.
I certainly agree with an original comment, now gone, that this is a train wreck: far too fast (Box doesn't even have time to play the chorus lick) and sloppy, with the goofiest synth line ever. My friend who saw them in '77 said that the obvious difference in technical ability between John Wetton and the rest of the band - shown during a brief instrumental jam when the vocal mics cut out - was just laughable. Even that 17-year-old fan admitted that Wetton was "slumming."
Ken Hensley destroyed the greatest band on the face of the earth by kicking out David Byron.

Its almost imposable to compare Freddie Mercury and David Byron. They both were one of a kind. Would of been nice to hear them do a song together.
bassplayer4445 2 years ago
They were both great showmen. The sound quality on this is not great and you have to remember David was drinking heavily at this time...I think that is obvious here...and speaking as someone who saw him live in 1973...I find this video so sad
luckyforsome56 2 years ago
Byron was always a prima donna- even before Freddie Mercury made it on the scene. He was always this cheesy. His vocals obviously don't compare to FMs.
Still, they were a fun concert.
Jubal24 2 years ago
Why did David Byron the lead vocalist leave the band? In my opinion they ceased being Uriah Heep after he left just like Van Halen ceased being important after they dropped David Lee Roth. Peace.
makingsense53 2 years ago
He got kicked out because he drank too much. He would go onstage drunk and perform badly, so the band had to drop the hammer on him.
Kohntarkosz 2 years ago
After what I read (I think it was in the notes from Two Decades in Rock) Byron got kicked because he told the audience to go f*ck themselves when he had an accident on stage.
fbendz 2 years ago
Which was the result of him drinking too much. As I recall the incident you're talking about was like the final straw, but apparently the preceding couple years it had been building up to that.
Kohntarkosz 2 years ago
You're right but that incident was the last drop, literally speaking...
fbendz 2 years ago
gotta agree...the sound is musically bad. And Gary Thain is listed as co-writter of this song. One of the few with Heep.

Yes he is John wetton!!

who is the bass player?
john wetton?
or not?
thnx.
Imparatu 3 years ago
Yes it is Wetton playing on this video. Gary Thain played the bass on the studio version, but he died in 1975 so unless he was resurrected from the dead...

Heey, bedankt voor deze post. Had toentertijd een cassetterecorder tegen de tv gehangen en jaren met veel plezier naar de tape geluisterd tot ie helemaal dun en uitgerekt was.
Te gek om het nog eens terug te zien!!

Sound Quality is terrible! What a shame to witness such a GREAT band in it's decline!

Indeed....Byron began to think he was
Freddie Mercury.
what an ass primadonna ☻
PAULLONDEN 3 years ago
I love Mercury but... Byron was in a 'higher league', mate! Maybe this video is not the best prove of it (his drinking problems were well known before that) but listen to ALL his stuff... He, definitelly, makes the top, fucking, three, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan and Dave Byron. A-maaan...
PrZemek44 3 years ago
Agreed Pr, Byron era Heep does it for me too.
ByTheWay ....5:13...impressive move,
drunk and on high heels ☺
But, come ON ,those first 4 Queen albums are difficult to top.
PAULLONDEN 3 years ago
Byron in a higher league than Freddie Mercury?
In your fucking dreams mate..Freddie was the ultimate showman with a great voice..also very professional and never went on stage pissed like Mr Byron
Top 3..
Ian Gillan
Freddie Mercury
Ronnie James Dio.
theplanetking 2 years ago
Whatever. I like Freddy. Ozzy, Niemen... Yeah, check him out. Cheers.

Such a terrific band in their time, and this video is classic stuff.
However, it's a bit sad to see David Byron on his spiral to self-destruction, especially so soon after the Thain crash.

yeah, the Byron-Box 'exchange' isn't doing much for the song, but that just goes w/o saying. and the keyboards are seriously leaving something to be desired. someone please, blow them up. Wetton looks miserable... and ridonkulously desperate, down on his knees. i can only imagine that there is a lot of booze and "candy" involved here. movin' on...
liquidlena 3 years ago 4
haha.

David Byron Was god and he still here 4ever !!!!

The always amazing John Wetton on Bass.
epicmeade 3 years ago 9
first off: i love John Wetton. and i have no problem with the man being down on his knees... but not here
the man has a stellar resume. this... is... just not adding to it. but i believe he got a house out of this (his tenure with the Heep). so, i guess... sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...
liquidlena 2 years ago 2
I think John Wetton should be proud of being a part of Uriah Heep's history, definitely the greatest band he's ever played in.
GreekPicker 2 years ago
hmm, let's see... Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, UK... yadda yadda
wait... this is too easy :) movin' on...
liquidlena 2 years ago 4
He was never a real member of Roxy Music, he only played live with them. In terms of worldwide success, the only other band Wetton was a member of and could compare to Uriah Heep was Asia.
GreekPicker 2 years ago
And what to think of UK with Eddie Jobson on keyboard and Zappa's drummer Terry Bozzio. Wetton did this before Asia.
HHWijste 2 years ago
Well, I really tried to come up with something witty about 'Heep being the greatest band Wetton ever played in' (definitely too!!), but with that mind melting synth organ sound in my ears, I just can't think of anything... duh!
PeterVonRock 2 years ago
Alright, you definitely have the right not to like the Heep... Likewise, we have the right to adore Ken Hensley's "mind melting organ" and David Byron's falsetto vocals. Enough said, Uriah Heep rules!
GreekPicker 2 years ago
OK GreekPicker, I don't wan't to pick a fight with you over Uriah Heep... actually I like the Heep, but this was certainly a low point in their career (and it's not Wetton's fault)
I really admire your passion for Uriah Heep (my debut concert experience)
PeterVonRock 2 years ago 2
hey, PVR! let's toast some marshmallows over that fire :) can never get enough of that! i doubt that anyone participating in this performance remembers being there anyway, so, in the end probably not even worth discussing/debating. as we all know, John toured with ROXY (and solo Ferry). he even made a few promo vids with them. Viva! Roxy! at any rate, i'm sticking to my guns in believing that JW was more a 'member' of ROXY than he ever was whilst in Heep. but clearly, the Crimson King reigns!

I`m glad they don`t do that shit with the elevated stage anymore. For most of the time the band is playing to each other and if you happen to be somewhere in front, after the show you`ll go home with a broken neck.

Simply put: Uriah Heep is just that: Uriah Heep. Forget the quality of the vid and the sound: this is Uriah Heep! Enjoy the Heep!
Thank you IVegtamI for blessing us with this vid!
startover942 3 years ago
I certainly agree with an original comment, now gone, that this is a train wreck: far too fast (Box doesn't even have time to play the chorus lick) and sloppy, with the goofiest synth line ever. My friend who saw them in '77 said that the obvious difference in technical ability between John Wetton and the rest of the band - shown during a brief instrumental jam when the vocal mics cut out - was just laughable. Even that 17-year-old fan admitted that Wetton was "slumming."
jackal59 3 years ago
Well he did some "slumming" with the greatest
sonic art expession to this date(and beyond).
Technical ability?:).

Byron's the man. He did a great album with Rough Diamond, but Heep shouldn't have let him get away. Great concert footage.

Love the song. But Byron had the Freddy Mercury wardrobe with the Mike Brady perm.
