perfect perfect ragtime tuning perfect speed very nice i tried to play this for years then turned to a player piano and now i colect mechanical clocks
Great technique! Smooth and flowing without any "pounding," playing a song that almost requires "choppiness." You've got superior touch, and played the entire piece without nary a misplaced finger!
Very nice but I have 2 questions... is that the only song you know ( meaning post more please) and also what kind of piano is that...Gulbransen??? just a guess
Just one question, how much pedal are you using? It doesn't like a song that needs any pedal use at all. I'm learning it now but so far only on keyboard which has no sustain option.
Just started learning this song and got the first two sections. As a mostly classical player (until becoming my schools jazz pianist) I find the "bouncy" left hand challenging. Anyway, you are a great pianist and did a wonderful job, keep playing!
Just WOW. This was played flawlessly! By the way, I have a question. I can play the first two parts of this piece, and I have yet to learn the next two parts. Was it more difficult to learn last two sections oppose two the first two? I know the last two sections consist of much longer leaps in the bass clef but is it more difficult to play?
@Grasshoppa065 In my opinion, when the piece modulates, it becomes harder, although if you've mastered the first two sections then it won't take you too long to learn. A good thing about this is once you've learned it, it'll pretty much play itself so long as you've taught your finger muscles to remember where to position them, unlike for example the entertainer, where you often need more concentration even though you've learned it, because of the difficult octaves. Hope this helps :D
@toddyvedda Thanks for the advice. I actually learned the whole thing already, I learned the rest two weeks after my post, one section a week. I couldn't agree more with you, I know exactly what you mean by it "plays itself" once you have the muscle memory down. My music teacher gave me the entertainer to practice since I like playing ragtime so much, and again, I completely agree with you. I can play the first two sections, and it takes great concentration every time.
@toddyvedda I use to be able to play The entertainer when I was a kid doing second grade piano but this piece is in a different league. I didn't even waste time attempting it.
@Maxshard It depends, without the octaves with the added thirds in during the whole piece, the entertainer is a very easy piece, it depends what score you have i think
He begins with such pedantic predictability, but within fourty seconds he starts folding it all in upon itself, which is exactly what a rag must do. I find myself watching this over and over again! How does he go from being boring to being mezmerizing? When does this happen? How and when?
@xxnikkicolaxx Yeah it's grade 8 Royal Conservatory (Canada). Or it was 8 years ago when I played this for my grade 8 exam. Might want to get a syllabus and double check that one.
This was amazing. I'm currently trying to brush up on old piano skills (12 years of lessons down the drain... :/) I tackled this piece first. That final section (and always has) slows me down, hardcore. Well done sir.
Out of all the people that I have heard play this one, I like yours the best. I cant explain it , its just right. Very good . I am learning it my self. I am afraid of that last part. I t looks impossible.
OMG you are giving me chillsssss. You are amazing. You know how hard that song must be???? Wow... btw do you know Echo of Spring? OK now I am inspired to go learn it on the piano myself! How long did it take you to learn it that well? BRAVO!!!!!

You are the only person on youtube who got the speed right. Liked the slow start to the third section. You should really save up for a slightly better piano but good job though.
hi! i'm selling food supplements which are really good to health..it's proven..it's USANA..for orders you may want to email me at eva_leva2000@yahoo.com..thanks!!
@thorsilvershammers There is no problem with the piano or the pianist. If you think that you can do any better at playing the piece, than post your own video. You should give the pianist credit for keeping up with something worthwhile in this world.
@barton1931 I don't have any problem with the pianist, the artistic interpretation, the tempo changes....but that piano is horribly, horribly out of tune...dumbass
@thorsilvershammers You need your head examined. You don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. It is in tune with itself, and is most likely going through a climatic change. I have been a piano tech for over 25 years, so I know what I am taking about.
@barton1931 .....this 'debate' involves neither my ass nor a hole in the ground. I have played on many old, dischordant pianos. These instruments have not had the benefit of 'technical expertise' such as your own; some haven't been tuned in well over twenty-five years. I recognize the jagged-sounding chords produced by such pianos. So, I'm not really sure what you are 'taking' about. I probably do need my head examined, but not by you.
That's the perfect piano for playing a rag, it sounds just like if it came straight from the 19th century ;-). Nice interpretation very clear and articulated sound. I love the slowing rythm surprises you make at 1:25 and 1:48. How about a little more of such surprises, for instance using power variations? ...although I have no idea whether Mr Joplin would be happy with using power variations.
I am from France, w/ amateur piano degree from Lyon music school. I played this piece in bars.
@daditsjustaytaccount well there's some people that are passing degres in music and you gotta do an exam by the end of the year showing 4 of your better songs of the year and most of the time you past your degres :) Is it answering your question dear ?
Excellent all those hours of practice when you might have wanted to do something else have payed off. Scott Joplin would have bragged about you to all of his friends. Don't ever stop playing daily. The great ones practice daily. But that said, you're the only one who hears the mistakes or flaws. If you made one I'd never know.
amazing... wish could play that too... had been played for 15 years but it's 3 years ago that i broke up. So will be difficult to learn that easy. But I decided at that moment to buy the sheet music .. perhaps I will make it :-)
Nice job man. I just learned this version and still a tad shaky at the very end but you really nailed the trio. Not sure how you can play those octive jumps that fast. And as far as i heard, no mistakes...very good job.
Ah. I love this song. I learned how to play it about 2 years ago, and i must be getting rusty, because I still make mistakes playing it. Such a nice catchy tune.
@samdajellybeenie14 Agreed! That ritardando was pretty great :) Most of it's okay, it's the Tro that's the killer. The A and D sections are easy. The B is more difficult, but the C (trio), I still can't play it perfectly after playing Piano for 8 years :(
me either! I just played a piano competition and after 7 or 8 years playing piano, I can't play it perfectly either! I find the B section endings (1st and 2nd ending, but more 2nd ending) to be difficult. When I first started playing this piece, I thought the coordination between the two hands was really hard and really took a lot of practice!
Yeahh it is very tricky. The first section is easy, in fact very easy. At first the coordination between the two hands was very hard, it's got an unusual rhythm. Whenever I play this I try and avoid playing the Trio (I know it's bad!) but it's jst so tricky.
