I served on this ship from 1981 to 1985 , during beriut, plank owner. I miss my shipmates i served with, and miss the ship also. It was a awsome experience!
Isn't it ironic: at one time she protected this nation from our enemies but now she sits docked along side the most dangerous city in the US: Camden NJ.
My grandfather, Harry Chew, was in charge of NY Ship. He built the NJ. I am from Haddonfield and I was a 71542 with the 101st in Vietnam. That piece of metal means nothing without the men who run things.
I was on this ship today. Its an amazing ship and beautiful too. There is one thing im mad about though. The Jappenese were supposed to surrender on this ship because it was the most decorated but was done on the missouri instead since trumman was from that state. Now the Missouri is at Hawaii where all the movies are filmed so it gets a lot of income from hollywood and is very maintained. It recieved a new teak deck... which the New Jersey should of got. Support the New Jersey!!! DONATE
I wish that they would open up the entire ship but its really amazing. One of the things im mad about is that this ship was supposed to have the Jappenese surrender on it since it was the most decorated but since Trumman was from missouri at that time he had it signed on the missouri which was then put at Hawaii where all the hollywood movies r filmed there for battlehips so it gets a lot of income so it has new teak decks and is more well preserved...
my dad served on that ship. he worked in the machine shop from 1982 to 1986. just wondering is the below deck experince open to the public yet? please send me a message telling me if it is or not :)
I was on the Decommissioning crew 8 February 1991. What a sad day in my life.

I've been aboard the Black Dragon. It was amazing. The ship is enormous, and I got to stand on the same deck as Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey!
