  • Please don't compare these video's with tournament perfomances... Kancho Kanazawa shows the art not any competition stuff... All are good but don't compare 2 diferrent things... The pure budo with the tournaments... oss to all karateka!

  • @skifhania Totally agree with the comment. They are different things which shows Kanazawa Kancho about the art of combat itself.

  • One day I will become a black belt and I will be all the katas

  • @jessica5000000 Yes, my daughter performs this kata at tournaments on a regular basis & she is a green belt with 2nd blue stripe. And yes it is a black belt kata. I believe....the first black belt kata. She also performed a musical kata for the talent portion of a beauty pageant she competed in. She led off with Bassai Sho (open hand) & transitioned into Heian Yondan with her Sai. She performed this "kata mix" to Miley Crys "Can't Be Tamed". It was pretty cool! I will try to upload a video!! :o)

  • Hirokazu Kanazawa is awsome

  • Now there is a kata i haven't done in while :')

  • 5 people suck ass

  • lol, sogar der hat bei manchen kokutsudachi´s vorne nen bremsefuß...

  • LOVE this video! My daughter is a green belt (with first blue stripe yay) and just competed in her first competition as a intermediate. She is 12. She performed this kata & did very well! Now...just to get some more power into her performance & kiya's!! :o) Shihan Hirokazu Kanazawa does an outstanding job performing this so all can learn from him!!

  • @GreeneEyedCwgrl a green belt did this kata? wow thats cool. I thought this kata was a black belt kata

but I do korean moo duk kwan so what do i know about japanese karate lol. our style have adopted bassai dei as one of our katas but we call them poomsae. but we dont do that until we are like brown or red belt. mind that our red belt is before black. and the bassai we do in my art is not as advanced as this one. I didnt even know there was another bassai

  • ILL TAPE MINE THATS IF U WANT ME TO OSS

  • Katas' are there to provide principles of karate, not to prove realism

  • good

  • the JKA version of Shotokan is a joke! Funakoshi did not give them the true essence of the art.

The Okanawan version was a KILLING art. The japanese version was a watered down version.

This can be seen easily if one knows what to look for.

You have Karate-Jutsu(the killing art) which is the purest form of okinawan karate!

Then you have Karate- do( based on development of character)

The Okinawans practiced a killing art- the Japanese practiced a philosophy of self improvement.

  • @commonsensrules Then step into the ring w/ your killing art w/ Cunge Le and show us!

  • @osensei2987

LOL, like cunge lee is somthing to be feared? how about outside a ring with rules? U think he holds up to a shot to a vital area any better than anyone else?

Only idiots believe MMA has any bearing on what would happen in a real fight!

  • @commonsensrules Don't talk to me about vital areas! All you so-called martial aka "folk" arts killers wind up with ur face in the dirt. Your nukite, ashi barai, shuto and kentsui uchi crap only pisses off ur opponent and makes him kick ur ass more severely than he otherwise would have! Sure deadly strikes are good to know, but you have to get into the effective range without getting ur head taken off to use them. You'll never get close to a trained athelete w/ ur "folk art" skills!

  • @osensei2987

First of all, Any combat situation has so many variables that predicting an outcome is impossible. Anything can happen at any moment.

Will i say i can defeat anyone? absolutely not, situation is everything.

There are two types of combat- Unforeseen and prearranged.

a true martial artist knows that his adversary will not be another true martial artist- it will be a lesser opponent. Because a true martial artist seeks to avoid conflict.

So yes, i think i'm safe!

  • @commonsensrules Sure! Right! Just shuto someone on the carotid artery or shuto the clavicle. Have u every done such a thing. I suppose u want me to believe that Okinawan Karate kills people in the dojo for practice just so that they can make sure their techniques work. Truth is, most ppl who talk about "deadly strikes" have never used them in combat. If u use these techniques in a street fight the chances are it will be for the first time.

  • @osensei2987

First, kata was invinted for just this purpose. I have used many breaks, strikes, and joint locking techniques in my time. Seond, we do not kill people while training.

I never mentioned using deadly strikes- i simply pointed out the difference between jutsu and do- get offended much??

  • @commonsensrules Don't confuse MMA w/ the crap u see in the UFC, Strike Force and crap like that. Those organizations are like the WWF of MMA. The monks at the Shaolin are MMA fighters are they not? Furthermore, unless u practice Zen meditation w/ ur karate u can abandon any hope that u will be able to defeat survival instinct and sensory overload in order to execute a correct response to a sudden attack. Unless u attack 1st u will have to earn that deadly strike!

  • @osensei2987

To add, i was speaking of unforeseen combat.

Now if we are talking prearranged then things change.

    Competition is a different story.

Could i beat cung lee in a ring with rules? Probably not as i'm 40 and not trained for said event.

In the street things change though. As far as shaolin monks go- who the hell knows?

It stands to reason that those monks spend their lives perfecting shaolin boxing and would prove difficult to say the least, but not impossible!

  • For all of the arrogant martial artist out there who believe their style is the best understand this. Every form of martial arts is essentially the same each focusing on 3 unifying principles block, punch, and kick. However, each style focuses on a different perspective of these 3. Before you discredit a style or practicioner learn what their style believes to be important in katas some believe moreso in foot work, others low stances, linear movements, or even strong kiai's.

  • Does anyone notice the small earthquake at 0:32?

  • i think that EMPI is easier to learn than BASSAI SHO. But that`s my opinion.

P.S. : I learned EMPI in half hour but BASSAI SHO....

  • @Ionut22y I learnt EMPI as my tokiay kata, still haven't got the hang of basai sho though :P

  • @Ionut22y me too i learned Empi at a seminar and i got it down really quick and bassai-Sho im still learning

  • Un kata poderoso y armónico. oss

  • Is bassai sho the only kata with ashi barai (leg sweep)?

  • It's the only Kata where it is explicitly Ashi Barai. But i.e. in Tekken series you got many leg sweep techniques as well as in Unsu for instance. So actually leg sweep techniques are in many of the master Katas...

  • nah

  • I like this kata because of its self-defense potential(especially against an opposition who is armed with a Bo/long stick/bamboo pole.) The very 1st move of Bassai Sho I modified(alsolutely no means to disrespect Kanazawa sensei or any Shotokan karate-kas) it to both hands grab hold of an incoming thrusting pole, pull it to the left side of the body follow by a right knee. Just my personal preference.

  • doido'

  • I personally, have learned a great deal from watching this man's kata video's. I'm not sure what could be improved upon in this kata performance. Please be specific if you want to criticize, otherwise it's just empty boasting. The man in this video is clearly a master of karate!

  • Day Man!

  • @adox26 He doesn't twist his standing foot the right way when kicking kekomi at the first shout - by twisting it so that the toes face the opposite direction to that of the travel of the kick, it's force can be maximised.

(I had to watch the video so many times just to spot that tiny thing, and I wouldn't tell him, cos he'd kick my arse!)

  • My training started in 1964 and I still run a full time martial arts academy with my sons. I had the honour of being graded by this great martial artist. Anyone who could post negative comments about him really does not understand karate and probably never will. In every walk of life, the inane splashing always goes on in the shallow end.

  • " This is so clearly a staff kata - why does no-one do it with a staff? "

    Because karate means empty hand...

And Kanazawa trained with, and was trained by Gichen Funakoshi - The founder of Shotokan karate, and people question how close his karate is to the 'original' ??

  • "Empty hand" doesn´t automatically mean that a karateka has no weapon in his hand. Learn a bit about the philosophy and you will understand what "empty hand" means

  • So what empty hand means?

  • It means that you have an empty mind and you focus only to the very present you're in.

  • for nearly fifty years I have breathed these heavenly arts. Unfortunately this is kata as theatre, not as the masters of Okinawa Te created it. Whilst it looks "good", it has no bearing on the real martial art as it was meant to be. One must go back to the Original Okinawa Te to understand it, not something that was created for competition. As one who knows what the secret techniques are, this kata does not have them.

  • "for nearly fifty years" ...and your age is 28??? (according to your profile).

This is one of the world's most renowned Shotokan karate practitioners, not an Okinawa Te Practitioner. Karate evolves over time, it does not remain the same.

For competition?? Competition/sport versions include Lucca Valdesi and Michael Milon, not Kanazawa... there is still a human side to Kanazawa's version.

I would love to see your version of Bassai Sho, should you be so courageous to tape your own performance...

  • I couldn't agree more with you, y488 ! I'm sick and tired of perpetual losers who "know the secret, but won't reveal them" . It takes a moron to question the greatness of Kanazawa Sensei. While I do not belong to his SKIF, I do consider myself belonging to a greater Shotokan family- been practicing Shotokan since 1978. And this performance of Bassai Sho (a little different from the original JKA version ) is nothing short of great!

  • you're right. this guy must be completely stupid. it amazes me that some of these people even know how to type lol. Yeah, this wasn't made for competition, xma was there's a HUUUUUGGEEE difference.

  • KMBPH777,

If you're so confident in your remarks, why not upload their versions of Bassai Sho here on Youtube for us to compare? Otherwise, anyone can simply boast, "I know someone better" etc. etc.

Reveal to us who these mystery shodans are!

  • Im a practicioner of Shito-Ryu and I feel as if the kata of Kanku Dai is Better than the Shotokan version. However This guy's power and solidity in his kata makes my kata feel like shit. Yes in this time and age with supplements and better training, there is allways someone who will be better depending on how you see it. Someone better in technique than Kanazawa maybe not yet.

  • this is not Okinawa te, this is a Kata of Shotokan Karate, another style of Karate. Okinawa te is a martial art that is an antecesor of Karate, is a diferent martial art, this is what we have to understand.

  • kamukha nya si Long Mejia, haha

  • great kata doing that for 2nd dan

  • it is a beautifaul kata.i think i lldo that for the next grading.

  • Its defence against a staff.

  • The opening moves of the kata are designed to take a staff; you don't start with one, and have to imagine you have one throughout the remainder of the Kata. I imagine if someone tossed you a staff after the tiger mouth blocks 2nd move in, you'd be set to rock though. :-)

  • This is so clearly a staff kata - why does no-one do it with a staff?

  • I did this one with a staff at a tournament and got first place! It was so fun...on the other hand though, I feel like it is such a beautiful kata with or without weapons.

  • @mooseven Probably the same reason you don't do katas with an opponent.

  • How come Shou is freakin' harder than Dai??

  • How come no one does the freaking seikan version of it..jesus it totally does not help me :(
