I agree that this song is about atheism, but I don't see it as being about suicide. I interpret it as a song about the struggle that we atheists face to be accepted in a world that despises us, about deciding to take a stand for what you believe in- or rather, what you don't believe in. He's saying that he refuses to take solace in or follow a god that is not real.
I like the song, but I think the philosophy behind it is completely mistaken. It's an atheist's cry of despair as he tries to work himself up to ending his life. What a tragedy - to think that suicide is freedom, but believing in God is slavery. Wow. I was there, too. Thank God I am not anymore.
