2. Even disregarding that, Fenris is the cynical, hardened, troubled warrior/slave. Not especially a romantic (although a few of his lines make me melty.) Anders /is/ a romantic, idealistic, and despite everything, actually the /less/ cynical of the pair. It makes sense.

There isn't a whole lot of rampant homophobia running amok in Thedas, but from what I gather, heterosexuality is still the ideal and encourages its citizens to procreate with the opposite sex. In addition to Anders being a mage, he can't marry Hawke, much less give him a child, which are both considered the norm in their society. Thus, why he says, "I can't give you a normal life."
