The next time you go to this station, If your in the last car of the southbound G line at Broadway station..you can "see" the darkened transfer tunnel that would have taken you to the upper levels where the 6 track South 4th st station is located..there is also a closed off door located in the station where the walkway is. NOTE: South 4th St. isn't a complete, full-length station. It's only as long, roughly, as the G-line station below, Broadway is wide.
I was at the Broadway station last fall and saw what looked like an opening in the ceiling above the N/B platform near the northern end - looked like a ventilation shaft of some sort. Perhaps it goes up to the unused shell above.
Access, once you're let through a locked gate at the end of one of the platforms of the G's Broadway stop, is up the crude "ramps" that were never turned into finished stairways. They're steep, and slippery with dust. The station is a semi-complete shell, all platforms and trackbeds in place, but no rail, no tile, no stairs. What struck most of us over and over was the size.
It actually has 6 tracks and 4 platforms. On the current system, you could only compare it to Hoyt-Schermerhorn. (The plans from '29 in which it was to be 4 tracks and 2 platforms, and revised plans from '30 showing the existing 6 and 2.) All this in a relative "middle of nowhere" as Brooklyn goes. I've got down on the trackways and walked to one end or the other to see where they deadended at blank walls, waiting for a connection that never came (I've got permission from an MTA Employee).
Wait! Are there really tracks that lead to that South 4th St. station like the Nevins st. lower level or is it just dents in the ceiling of Broadway station that indicate the station's positions?
"or is it just dents in the ceiling of Broadway station that indicate the station's positions?"
Yes, if you go to the northern end of the Broadway station, you will be able to see a hole on the ceiling, which was probably has to do with the South 4th Street Construction back in the Mid 1930's.
I'm going to Broadway again next time, but I did find the passage that leads to South 4th St. I'll try looking at the ceiling as well. BTW, there is an article that talks about the station, and damn, it gives so much good tips!
I actually almost entered that darkened transfer passage but it was pretty freaky so I just got some pictures of the passage from the existing station.
They should add two more cars to the G line.

@slicingwater They could if they wanted to. Back in the early 90s the G Train used to be a 6 car Train before they put it to a 4 car Train.
