The whole Spandau v. Duran thing is recent news to me. Spandau only had one big hit in the US, and a handful of very minor ones. D2, on the other hand, was HUGE here! I only recently found out that they were even considered rivals. How funny.
Yeah - but it was just one of those things concocted in the press. There were a lot of common denominators - both bands offered 5 photogenic young men from ordinary backgrounds and same era, both who mixed styling with music into their formula. They went to combat on a TV show music trivia comp and had a great old chuckle together. Can't be that bad, huh?
Well USA was late with music as always.Duran Duran came there after 1984,and in Europe they were big since 1981.Thats the same time that Spandau Ballet was popular all arround Europe.Duran Duran came to world fame after they went to USA tour when you guys get the late HITS ,in UK many critics used to make jokes with Lebons singing qualities, from the other side Spandau Ballet was accepted as a New Romantic favourits.Well they might be rivals as Boy Bands from beggining of 80s.
@sitlord75 No, Duran Duran was huge with the re-pressing of Rio in 1982. "Rio", "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Save a Prayer" were all huge hits in the US. By 1984, Duran Duran was doing odd non-album songs like "Wild Boys" and "View to a Kill" and getting ready to split up. Spandau Ballet didn't really hit the US until "True" was released in 1983.
@sitlord75 martin fry, stephen singlton, Mark Lickley, Mark palmer, all the key memebers of early abc...those guys are pros they (play)...yes there was a sillyness to them (look of love video) but it was only silly because i saw them as players not actors...what has lance bass done besides want to go to the moon? WHat are NKOTB doing? Backstreetboys? those guys didnt play, they were pretty faces singing some ones produced garbage the new romantics played thier instruments.
One thing wrong with this video. that stupid sheet is in the way of.......TONY! Otherwise, I am lovin' this. Another video that NEVER made it over here in the USA :( thank God for Youtube-I am smilin
@DankoMcDougall You are supposed to have grown up after almost three decades, you know!
Beauty is in the eye (or ear for that matter) of the beholder. And the world is big enough for both Spandau and Duran. So boys, rock on please! My teenage children are singing to your songs!
duran duran never went to obscurity ... they had many cd releases and tours thru those years ... and who cares ... im just glad that spandau are putting aside their differences if anything for the cash and the good times they'll supply
So...what? Lol, what does that have to do with how I feel about the video? I'm not sure why you put hot under quotation marks as if my opinion is doubtful, but thanks for that bit of trivia anyway.
@Knispel1963 i can do that bass line in my sleep...but yeah its fun:) For me..and mind you im on the other side of the pond ABC was much bigger for me...the lexicon of love album i cut grass to buy...duran duran the same..and here i am at 37 and i actually a, able to afford the exaxt models they played.."john taylor aria pro II sb 1000"
and ive got a musicman sterling and stingray..some one else i loved was paul young (come back and stay) (sex) in usa i had to mail to get some of these albums!
@sprintbass ofcourse you can, and i can play this line in our sleep! the point was... it is so.... "sexy"... and the beat is great! as for the bass... im only a humble owner of an aria pro II, like urs which i will take to my grave! I ENVY YOU for your MUSICMAN! (still at my 47 a dream...) SO F!@#!@ expensive, man! for someone who is not pro! Greetings from Greece!
@Knispel1963 yeah i guess you could say its flirtacious..took me 26 yrs to get my aria..ove gone through alot of bass's to come to what i own now..the aria i had wanted since duran duran..i was like 9 years old stealing my frends sisters tiger beat magazine to see what sort of bass it was and when i found out i loved it..now that i own it, its a through body bass, its got a honk to it its fast..my stringray is fretless think (pino palladino) paul young..then i have a sterling thats my bass's

@twistedmahogany I did read in the Andy Taylor book that D2 cheated on that quiz show. That was kind of funny.

@sitlord75 No, they were here well before then, but they didn't really break until late 1982 and truly so in the spring of 83.

who cares about duran? spandau are minding their own business about duran. they are both great bands - ok?
estie12345 2 years ago 13
i found spandau more of a cult movement, more abstract.
certainly talent wise on a par with duran...and maybe more...such as being cult...

Fricking pipping HOT!
When they are all standing with there FABULOUS stylish underwear it KILLS me!
Steve Norman was and still is THE most HANDSOME man. I's Paint Him Down, hehe.
But seriously, another complete MASTERPIECE from "Diamond". THE best Spandau album. "She sits beneath my moving pictures" = FANTASTIQUE!
I wish that "Glow" could have been a proper single with a video as well. Another FAV of mine, for sure *
Spandau had the special Club Roots soundz of the HEAVENLY Early 80s +
