He still plays amazingly, but his you can hear his voice is going. It's technically not as good as the original, but his voice has so much more emotion, it works so much for the song. Absolutely gorgeous.
Got to say my favourite version is the Bombay Bicycle Club version, Jack Steadman makes the lyrical pattern more interesting in my opinion and I think he is a better guitarist than Loudon and Alex Chilton. Although I like the humour in Loudon's version.
I agree .. but check out Here come the Choppers . Bill Frizell , playin' guitar and Jim Keltner on drums . for my money , it's Loudons best work ... and I think it's his latest .
I also love 'Here come the choppers' and particularly because of the guitar playing of Bill Frizell which adds a new dimension to Loudon's brilliant songwriting. I believe his latest album is 'Strange Weirdos' but I haven't heard it yet.
Louden Wainwright III wrote it in 1971, guys. You can't call it "his version". It's his song. Others do versions of his song.

The Reed Foehl version is quite good as well, but it doesnt have the desperate feel of the original.

I really dig the original version, but hearing him play it at his older age really brings something else out of the song.....
Thanks alot for posting it!

This brought me close to tears. Saw him play it 1972, suppporting Soft Machine (vintage IV). He was hilarious, they were dull. What great song.
