i hear a lot of complains about Heritage, i don't find it as my favorite opeth album, but it is a great album
why the fuck would an awesome and talented band would get stucked in just one style of music, if they can play lots of good stuff? at least they change trying to do more good music and different styles
art is about taking risks, and they're doin that
i don't think that a band like Led Zeppelin would've become in what they are without taking risks
This is in fact one of my favorite parts of The Lotus Eater, I personally love funk and jazz as much as any other genre that is incorporated in prog-music these days. If you truly like Opeth, you don't just like them for certain elements, have a sense of fucking perspective and open-mindedness. These guys aspire to keep growing and experiment with different sides and edges of music, while you are still fucking stuck at Ghost Reveries? You are not worthy to be a fan if this is the case.
@MrCh33pshot That's your opinion. Personally I love Heritage, and I like where they are taking the music. You have to understand that Opeth is a progressive band, if you listen to Opeth just because of their metal elements, you will not really listen to Opeth, you will listen to metal as Opeth in one moment, and therefore a lot of it won't be good to you. I listen to their music as a whole, and I love prog.
@BenjaminProd Doesn't have anything to do with 'understanding Opeth.. and knowing their music as a whole', I love metal.. and I love Jazz, I love indie, I love trance.. but, Heritage isn't actually very good. It's boring. Don't go the whole 'you need to listen how deep and amazing it is' on me.. it's just boring. They play really dynamic interesting parts for like 20 seconds a song.. and then groove on an organ for 8 minutes. Groovin is cool, but structure is important.
@gsusfreak08 If you like trance then I could not give a bigger shit about your opinion of Heritage;). "It's just boring", this is an enitrely different approach to music and it is heavily influenced by 60's and 70's prog music / psychedelic stuff, it is SUPPOSED to be like this... if you've heard anything like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Focus, Yes, Rush, Nazareth, Kansas etc etc, you would know that this is pretty well made and lacks no structure as you say.
this shit works because it's kinda goofy and kinda takes you out of the seriousness of the song, that way the badass conclusion that comes up right afterwards rapes your asshole
Watershed was the first album I bought from Opeth, I heard about them before and never really cared to listen. But holy shit, it's awesome, and if some people hate it, then I can't imagine how good the other albums could be!
2nd: Another Ghost Reveries? Hmm I would not mind another Blackwater Park. However, Watershed is imo one of the worst, but I fully understand they wanted to try sth else. So they went back to the 70's. And these 70's-kinda sounds are the best on this album - like that part of Lotus Eater.
It is the metal part of the album that is simply not as good as before. Greetz to all fans.
@MrCrimsondom I definitely agree with you that the metal parts of Watershed were no where near on par with say the metal parts of Blackwater Park or Still Life.
But the more energetic softer parts such as Porcelain Heart, Hex Omega, and Burden have some amazing writing to them.
And of course Hessian Peel is hands down the best track on the album, and IMO they're best song since The Drapery Falls.
on the other hand, hessian peel is one of the best things they've ever done, and in that case the jarring transition around 5:45 of that song actually works.
of course, maybe i'm wrong and i just haven't "gotten it" yet. i am completely on board with that possibility - i felt that way about both the song "godhead's lament" and the album deliverance, and then one day, i'm listening in my car, and it clicked, and my mind was blown.
i am a die hard opeth fan and i think watershed is, overall, awesome, and obviously better than almost any other piece of music out there, but this is the most egregious example of the problem that album had - it was a series of great ideas plopped right next to each other without smooth transitions or attention to cohesion. mikael got mad sophisticated with the instruments and the textures, and amazingly the album sounds cohesive, but the individual songs do not.
@jsabbott0 So true. I felt good about this part of Lotus Eater, but what pissed me off was Heir Apparent's ending. It could become almost as epic as Leper Affinity's one, but they just added it like it was some spare part.
i wouldn't call it over progressive. i mean, the whole thing is 4/4. and one of the biggest thing in prog is varying time signatures. and i agree with tenrash. idea copied from dark nintendo night
progressive music is splicing in pieces of music that aren't traditional for that genre(I'm over simplifying). A lot of the time that does include leaving the comfortable 4/4 signature (in metal this is mainly thanks to Dream Theater) but considering that melody is VERY different for Opeth, i'd in turn call that VERY progressive.
i still wouldn't call it over progessive. no doubt this section IS prog. it has that 70s prog vibe kinda thing yet still retains that modern heavy sound (even though its not heavy at all)
Why would people have a problem with this section? It's my favorite part of the song. Plus, the lotus flower is psychoactive, and this part has a bit of a psychedelic feel to it
People really should stop bitching about this section of The Lotus Eater. "Over progressive?" Just shut the fuck up, really. You have no idea what Opeth is about if you actually use the term "over progressive." Apparently none of you have ever listened to The Mahavishnu Orchestra, or any of the other bands that influenced Mikael.
@Redd0346 Dude i hopeyou don't find my comment is "bitching" but... even though i think watershed is an excellent album... you cannot compare it to ghost reveries, at least that's my opinion, and i don't want them to release another ghost reveries, i love the way opeth re-create themselves with each album... but ghost reveries is ghost reveries =D
@nanonymousm all bow before the all-knowing master of progressive rock, nanonymousm. Why don't you shut the fuck up and stop bitching about people bitching about how shitty Watershed is.
Except Mario music is more interesting than what Watershed turned out to be. Here's a protip for Opeth: Pain of Salvation is NOT a band you want to strive to sound like, guys.
I specifically thought of Paper Mario when I first heard it XD. So funny to find this video after telling my friends "Listen to this song, this part sounds like its from paper mario"
i dont understand how people think of mario when listening to opeth! i thought it was definitely a funky getaway scene from the 70's series starsky & hutch!
You have to be honest, as much as I find this part totally awsome and godlike, you have to agree it could be a nintendo song. Btw, Nintendo games have great music so it's not a shame to play a part of ''Nintendo music''.
i'm not into the showing off of the keyboards either. this was a funny video..but i just don't find the 'bouncy' keyboard sound fitting of opeth...who am i to judge right, they play what they want. but it's just bound to happen when you set a style, fans latch onto it, then you throw in curveballs that come completely out of left field. they're still very much classic opeth of course, but it's these parts that i find distracting as hell... way out of place as far as i'm concerned.
You know what I don't get is fanboys. Seriously, I love Opeth, but there's a line you have to draw. Flaming because someone says something that could be interpreted as a negative towards a band is just fucking retarded. You may not have even been insulting Opeth, and these fuckers gave you two thumbs down! Goddamnit, I hate you fucking assholes and your extremist, close-minded point-ov-views.
