If I would have been born into my Mormon friends family then I would be Mormon, the same goes with Hinduism, Islam, etc... I, like many others, had no choice growing up in what to believe, or anything for that matter. I know religion is a comfort to many, but it also a breeding ground for unreasonable hatred and bigotry.

We long to be accepted (by people) & since church is a very sociable atmosphere, we condition ourselves to return there to receive that acceptance. In fact, some who go to church and don't believe keep quiet in order to avoid being shunned by their social group.

I use to play in the worship band for several years. I know the emotions that bring these "sinners" to tears. However, they are only emotions, chemical reactions in the brain. These same emotions are experienced by prisoners in reform programs, seeking to be accepted by society again.

@Welle92 Correction, people wrote the old testament. A lot of it is a collection of letters and records kept by MAN. God made sure it was not flawed, which it isnt, it is a perfectly accurate record of history the way it was back then. It is very sad that the law back then had so many violent consequenses and rules. God hates violence, so Jesus came and died to change the law and standards for MAN. He came to save us from having to try to earn our way to heaven.

@misscaroline01 Was this for a video titled "Lifehouse's Everything Skit? Well I watched it, and it seemed to be an interpretive dance, for which the meaning was obvious. I can see how this video would be inspirational, but I think it plays on people's emotions and has a rather vague, universal meaning that can easily be applied to daily struggles. I don't mean to shoot the video down, but I don't see how this will help me find God.

I love the music, I had great times with people, but I just had to be honest with myself in admitting that my emotional strings were just toyed with and that there is no reason to believe in one single deity (I don't believe in any). But it seems like religion has given you comfort in life and that is all that matters :)

@misscaroline01 Without getting into personal details too much, I would just like to say that I was a Christian for 20 years because that is what I was raised in. If I would have been born into my Mormon friends family then I would be Mormon, the same goes with Hinduism, Islam, etc... I, like many others, had no choice growing up in what to believe, or anything for that matter. I know religion is a comfort to many, but it also a breeding ground for unreasonable hatred and bigotry.

If you were born in another culture, another country, another family whose beliefs are different than yours, would you not be a part of that culture, country, or family? In consequence, you would most likely be a part of that culture's religion. The point is you could have been part of any religion.

So I will just leave off with this; humans experiences all sorts of emotions, the ones that bring us pleasure are the ones we usually seek after. We long to be accepted (by people) & since church is a very sociable atmosphere, we condition ourselves to return there to receive that acceptance. In fact, some who go to church and don't believe keep quiet in order to avoid being shunned by their social group.

@tabog002 Sorry, I ran out of room. I think that putting God into the equation of social acceptance is more of a (unprovable) correlation than the actual cause for our emotions experienced. I use to play in the worship band for several years. I know the emotions that bring these "sinners" to tears. However, they are only emotions, chemical reactions in the brain. These same emotions are experienced by prisoners in reform programs, seeking to be accepted by society again.

@misscaroline01 So why Christianity? With so many deities to choose from, how do you that your religion alone is from God? How do you know that yours is more correct than other peoples? Who is lying and who is not? How can you tell the difference between God's presence and the flow of dopamine to your brain from the acceptance of your peers for your reverence to God (all emotions are chemical reactions in your brain)? Why would God care about you but not other "heathens?" Just food for thought:)

Grace is defined as Receiving what you dont deserve which is SALVATION.
Mercy is defined as Not Receiving what you deserve which is ETERNAL DAMNATION.
All of us have received what we call "undeserved grace". We are all sinners..

And (I don't mean to be rude) I don't see how what I said has to do much with grace and mercy. I was saying that you have no choice where you are born, so in effect you don't have much choice of what religion you will grow up in. Since you could have been born elsewhere, how do you know who is correct?

There is no comparison to the joy that is found in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! People try to pick Him apart, finding all sorts of things that they don't like about Him, but they just don't understand Him, and they have no idea what they are missing out on. I pray for all the lost souls to search diligently for God and to finally find true joy. There really is nothing better!

@Welle92 Correction, people wrote the old testament. A lot of it is a collection of letters and records kept by MAN. God made sure it was not flawed, which it isnt, it is a perfectly accurate record of history the way it was back then. It is very sad that the law back then had so many violent consequenses and rules. God hates violence, so Jesus came and died to change the law and standards for MAN. He came to save us from having to try to earn our way to heaven.
