I like looking at the tattoo @ 5.5 hours! I got linework for a 3/4 sleeve (took 2 hours also) and im going in for another 3 hours next week. So i'll have 5 hours total on it. My sleeve has a ton of negative space (a lot of finger waves) so shit should flow by pretty quickly. Cant wait!

@bbybby91 IF your artist is fast, for black and grey I would estimate 5-7 hours (for a pretty detailed half sleeve) and for color I would estimate 6-8 hours. Im going in to the shop in 2 weeks to get 3 hours shading on my 3/4 sleeve. My artist is quick with very nice art (Shige style), my linework was only 2 hours. 3 hours should add all the black to it since my 3/4 sleeve is small, barely goes below the elbow.

Not going with a typical half-sleeve but will cover at least the front area of my upper right arm down to just above the elbow. Want to save that inner area of my arm for something else like my daughter's name; she's due April 2012. Stoked!

@UnearthAlex sometimes, and in my case, most of the time, people want a traditional tattoo, which by definition requires repetition. Nothing wrong with that if it is done nicely and looks like it belongs. Koi is a powerful symbol to a lot of people, gives one inspiration and motivation. I personally can sit by a koi pond for hours just watching them swim, they really are a majestic creature. I still enjoy doing them immensely. keep in mind Tattooing is a tradition based art.

Hope you are cool with a tech question...its about the darker colored column of scales, near the centerline of the koi. This looks a lot like black blended with red. In all my tattooing i have acheived this effect by first shading with black(or for smoother blend a dark wash) and then coloring over it after.

I remember taking a painting class once, and we were tought to mix color and black together to make what they called a "tone" of a color, and mix with white to make a "tint".
