Sliding tackles has become his trademark over the years and he wins back the ball from the opposition a lot and can create counter attacks. He does a lot of the "silent" work which seldom gives as much credit as the work that flair players like C. Ronaldo does.

well, I know many people don't like CR, but don't forget, CR has a higher goal scoring ability, not to mention that CR don't usually get into injuries, that is something Man United need more.

Seriously it amazes me how wrong people get it sometimes!!? Smith was a Striker converted into midfielder by fergie! Ask any leeds fan where he played? But he is a legend. The season Leeds got relegated he played like a man posessed every week. He gave everything. In my opinion that season he should have got pfa player of the year. Why does it always have to go to a player at the top? Injury spoilt his time at Man u but he's back doing the Biz in the championship. Top player.

smith's position was a cm but fergie converted him into a striker, meaning he had all the attributes of a midfielder (attacking and defending one) hence the perfect slide tackles, and the ones of a striker meaning he could basically play anywhere, he reminds me of rooney or vise versa, good vid btw!

People talk about Mascherano, De Rossi, Viera, Keane. IMO Alan Smith was and still is one of the worlds best tacklers. He played with a passion that nobody other than Wayne Rooney has these days. What a player.

Alan Smith was my fav at Leeds i loved his aggresiveness and also his determination, at leeds he was prolific goal scorer, and so what if he went to scum, he only went there so he could continue his international career i think if you asked any player to play for the most sucessfull team in recent times they'd say yeah! and he probably would of been in the England squad if he didnt get injured, heard hes doing well at newcastle. Alan Smith's a great player, although a lot of you judge him by his aggressive style of play he possess a great amount of skill, which you can see in some parts of this video. Sliding tackles has become his trademark over the years and he wins back the ball from the opposition a lot and can create counter attacks. He does a lot of the "silent" work which seldom gives as much credit as the work that flair players like C. Ronaldo does.

Smith could be great in a dirk kuyt-type role. He hasn't the goals to be a striker and not sharp enough with the ball for central midfield in the PL. But on the right in a 4-2-3-1 he could be fantastic.
