Martin Luther, John Knox, John Calvin --great initiators of the Prostestant (Protest) Reformation. Though each were afflicted with the darkness that is innate in humanity, they were great theologians. I love this hymn also, it almost brings me to tears ( especially when accompanied by the pipe organ.) As a Presbyterian, Luther's powerful lyrics and music hymn has always touched my soul.
