I just went through all five Police albums. You're talking some 60 songs. Want to know how many weren't excellent? About five of six. How many bands can claim that. Amazing.
Copeland's Father was manning the mid-east CIA desk, get it kids ? He's talking about mercenaries and spycraft in foreign countries here. And knew all about it through Dad !!
Besides that every one should know people are murdered for the diamonds we wear, people murder whole villages and start civil wars over the rights to mine rare components for our cell phones and game systems, We throw away those old technologies and a person in the 3rd world poison themselves to make change, from burning off components to sell back to you in all sorts of products, we are in some way all murders! And we are every one of us being slowly murdered, its the human condition.
All presidents and most politicians are murders, it doesn't matter if they tell you right wing bedtime stories or left wing bedtime stories killing signing off on murder is a part of the Job i'll quote the night stalker at his sentencing "i have merely done on a smaller scale what politicians engage in on massive scale every day, you have to learn murder is murder weather its done for DUTY, PROFIT or for FUN!"
@THEFLESHMANN1 C'mon now Rusty, you know it's so perfect: a pic of Bush in the Sarasota elementary school - easy to learn as your abc's! Besides, the horse ain't dead yet. You can always request to the op that a Truman pic be included - I promise not to be offended.
@THEFLESHMANN1 Truman did worse, but he had some reason to do it, despite how disproportionate his answer was.
Bush didn't have a real reason to invade Irak and sacrifice so many lives from every side of that war. Bush invented reasons. If anything, following his reasoning, he should have invaded NorthKorea or Iran first.
@xMrsmileyfacex What's more important: the number of innocent lives taken or the fact that they ANY were killed NEEDLESSLY? If you want President Obama's pic added, you are certainly free to resquest it - you do seem to know how to type. Rookies shouldn't start unprovoked wars with no exit plan that they can't finish. But then again, rookies don't usually put much thought into things and generally make a mess before someone else has to come along and clean up their mess.
Such a great song. But why does the poster say "Copykill"? It was called "Copycat". Cool movie too. Sigourney Weaver was sensational in it, as was Holly Hunter.
Using serial killers as images loses the message of the lyrics which is the murders ordered at a remove by powerful leaders in many nations. Their body counts vastly outnumber what any one individual can be capable of. The pogroms, the Holocaust, genocide in China, Cambodia, Africa all are on a horrific scale of death far beyond any of the examples shown here -- definitely Murder by NUMBERS.
@ernesto1985 - Not that these are the world's greatest sources, but, from Wikipedia: "Murder By Numbers" ... has lyrics comparing political power to the development of a serial killer. From Songfacts: "Sting said it is about the evil deeds of politicians."
It's not about serial killers. I know it's hard to tell what Sting is always on about when he sings but if you really listen to the lyrics it's about the thrill of murder. Example: You are flushed with your very first success, Murder is like anything you take too, all our greatest killers were adventurous, al least the one's we know by name.
stewart copeland murders thiis track in cold blood...
his chops are amazing, certainly one of the best drummers if not the best i've ever heard. precision and use of the hit hat n bass drum is impeccable on nearly every song they did
I always thought this was about serial killers, but am starting to think its more about the choices of governments to go into country and kill innocent people, like in the cases of genocide etc. Thumbs up if you agree
This song is many things to many people but for me it's one of the most ironic artistic expressions I've ever heard. Irony is the monosodium glutamate of art. It makes things taste better.
first time i heard this song at a movie called the copycat this was the first time i know even that there was a band called the police i searched their videos at you tube and man sting is a genius the lyrics just amazing and different i wish this is today's music i've got sick of i luv u i need u i want to hold u then on the other hand the rap too turned to shit like i want to bang u i want to Fuck u OMg the situation is fucked sir some one help us plz call the police
The "creepiest" music was their best - the more down to earth and mainstream the music became, the less interesting it got which eventually led the then end of the police.
VERY true! I have been tempted several time to learn "Maxwell's silver hammer" but its about murder and I just cant take joy in playing it. The Beatles could be creepy when they wanted to be. Whats ironic is that the songs actually sounds upbeat.
@Mark9309 Don't think i've heard it lol, it miht be upbeat cos its portrayin the murders POV, and that he/she take reat pleasure in killin' I'll check it out and comment aain tomoz :P

Good point intoxicated crow, but you don't necessarily have to be completely crazy to make up crazy things with words. Still, I tend to agree with you on this one haha.
"Don't Stand" is about a teacher who is sexually attracted to a pupil. Sting was a teacher. But apparently it was based on "Lolita", one of Sting's favourite books.
"Every Breath You Take" = stalker
"Roxanne" is about a prostitute, written from the perspective of an obsessive.. customer, who "loves" her and wants to control her and own her.
In some ways it is quite impressive, artistically.
The creepiest for me though is how he goes "ea-io" for half a song.

@TheBeautifulStream I feel it's possessive and controlling. This post still gets replies a year on :D I guess it means people are thinking. It's deliberate you see, Sting makes it creepy, it's poetic.
I won't share you with another boy
I know my mind is made up

Told you once I won't tell you again it's a bad way
@scarble No, I just don't happen to see the "controlling" part at all! But we have different perceptions. Sure, being controlling is very creepy, but I can't feel it in the song. So I guess we'll just agree to that!
(Teehee, it's also the highest voted comment on this video... no wonder people still respond. :D )
@AddictedToJohnnyDepp You would be better off falling in love with a human being and not a song. Please address this problem and report back to me when you have achieved this.

@scarble hey wait, I said that in my original post -_-
If you think trying to control someone isn't creepy....

I think this song didn't get play time until some years after the album.
It was originally only on the Compact Disc version I know that much.
It wasn't on the vinyl.

@gocartown I listened to it on the cassette version. About 20 years ago. Jeez. Aren't we the senior citizens. I was in my 77 T-bird rockin to this.
