I'm not a big fan of Peyroux, but her phrasing is pretty good. If you're used to only contemporary pop or classical, than laying back behind the beat may sound very different. But if you watch shows like American Idol, you notice that singers today have no idea how to phrase behind the beat, so their singing of old standard tunes sounds awful.
