You said the reason we call it ferrous is because the symbol for iron is Fe? No, Fe and ferrous are both called that because the Latin word for iron was 'Ferrum', hence the symbol, Fe, and the word for a substance containing iron, ferrous. Same with Lead (Pb, from Plumbum), Gold (Au, from Aurum), Silver (Ag, from Argentum) and others like sodium, potassium, etc.
