When it was originally instituted by Thomas Jefferson it was called separation of State and Church. It was meant so the state doesn't interfere with issues of the church. Obama can't be a christian and a Muslim. That's contradicting the Biblical definition of a christian which is a true believer, follower and disciple of Christ. Over 80% of America claims to be christian. If they were 'true' christians, the christian churches in America would be far bigger. 80% doesn't go to church.
Obama got OWNED in the forum, truth is he can't give a straight answer to easy questions because he wants to be all thing to all people. Maybe he should acting like a leader instead of giving vague answers all the time.
Here's a question to those against gay marriage. How would YOU like it if the government made your peaceful behavior in the privacy of YOUR own home illegal? Read the Declaration.
Read the Declaration of Independence. Basically, the government doesn't have the right to tell someone how to behave (peaceably) in the privacy of thier own home; and if the government enacts behaviors that are destructive to personal freedom, then the people have the right to deconstruct that governmental institution. If gay marriage becomes illegal, then the Declaration gives us the right to wage true war on the white house, and make a new country.
marriage, gay, straight, sideways, is a legal issue. joining before a God or gods is at the discretion of whatever dogma runs that particular portion of society.
If Bush is so stupid than how did he deceive so many of those intellectual democrats? Not an easy task for an idiot.
However, it's unfortunate that during war so many of you choose ridicule as a weapon against your own instead of the real enemy.
Abe Lincoln was called a 'war monger' because over 500,000 soldiers died. Harry Truman was so unpopular (2nd only to Bush) that the democrats nominated Adlai Stevenson in 1956, and lost.
R.Warren mislead B.Obama & the viewers of this program by stating that McCain was secured in a one of silence, when in all actuality he was not even in the building at all-that was a big difference. I respect Obama for going into "hostile territory" and facing their doubts, even though it was a trap. McCain was even privy to the questions, it was obvious, so of course he came across stronger. You could tell by the way he came off, he was over confident because of this.
shame on everyone that clapped when obama said marriage should be between a man and a woman. their clapping was enthusiastic, infused with hatred and disgust for gay people. this society is pathetic.
Wait wait so gays do not have "civil rights"? Really I was unaware that gays could not vote, sit anywhere on a bus, or even had to drink from a "gay" water fountain. Gay people have civil rights, they just don't have a couple "privlages". But gay people can vote, get jobs. That was just a moronic statement you made.
Marriage is religious institution. So the state should not be making any laws about it. You want separation of church and state, then stop trying to get gay marriage approved since it is a religious concept and idea. By the way "Separation of Church and State" is found no where in the constitution.
I may not fully agree with Obama on abortion, but his "pay-grade" response was spot on. How are we as humans to know the specifics of God's will?
Barack answered just like in other debates where questions weren't known to him. Sure he had SOME idea, and was partially prepared (because he knows his beliefs) but just look how often he used "well" before his answers. He didn't have a script.
McCain? He couldn't wait for Warren to finish them to recite his script! I lost a LOT of respect for Warren.
Obama's pay grade response was indicative of his his lack of ability to lead or much less make a decision, bottom line as the leader of the free world there is no higher pay grade if humans are to regulate and write laws about abortion he should have an opinion about when a child is a child.
Am I the only Obama supporter that thinks that McCain did better here? At least better than people expected him to do? I think he did well. Obama 08. It is imperative that we get the vote out.
I think McCain did a great job of pandering, yeah. Nice little scary soundbites about 9/11, terrorists and abortion for the rich Orange County GOP crowd.
Pathetic is a real good word for Barry Os performance.
Thoughtful my as$. Empty suit is a better description. He is typical of most Democrats running for office, they will never answer a question straight. They skate around and around to avoid answering the question because the truth to what they would answer would not sound very good to many people that they want votes from.
amazing answer on abortion from obama...people need to wake up and see the reality of abortion and unwanted pregnancy rather than trying to control women's bodies by saying "god doesn't like it"...time to grow up.
It was nice to see someone give thoughtful responses (Obama) instead of pat stump speech answers (McCain). I thougt Obama came off as sincere whereas McCain came off as plastic and just restating his talking points. It was BOOOORRRINNNGG! But Obama seemed so much more intelligent and pragmatic in his thinking. McCain was like watching Georg Bush in 20 years.
If this was supposed to be a fair forum, then why were the questions posed in different ways?
McCain's question began without the Christian preamble and NO mention of the verses proverb which Obama received.
McCain's Question 1 may have seemed identical but leaving out the preamble allowed McCain to focus on the part of the question that seemed most important "in your administration".
McCain performed unusually well and not as expected. He continually referred to his stump speeches. FAIR?
What a lie. Check CNN. McCain wasn't in any CONE OF SILENCE. He arrived 30 minutes into the interview and then he sat in the green room for the other 30 minutes. He listened to Barack's whole interview. He has proven to be untrustworthy and his FIRST statement when he came on the stage was a big fat lie. He said he couldn't hear in the cone of silence but he tried to listen through the wall. You could tell he knew the questions because he answered before Warren finished asking them!
Yes, Bush IS an IDIOT!!! He thinks before speaking unlike taking a position and not listening to anyone else and not allowing anyone to challenge him. No one person knows everything...certainly not Bush. It's amazing he can be voting into office for 8 yrs. NEVER served a day in combat (neither did Chaney), but they are somehow the experts (chiefs) when it comes to Iraq. I'm sick and tired of people criticizing such a common sense candidate. Good judgement is what you have here....
Bush is not an idiot because he stutters. He's foolish for too many other reasons to count. But if you want one reason, the Iraq war and all the lies he told during his State of the Union Address.
Obama might stutter, but yes, the man can think. His response on abortion makes that absolutely clear.
rightcoast, I am an Obama supporter but I agree with you... to some extent. Bush really is an idiot because when he stutters, he simply didn't know the answer. Obama stutters because he is overly careful with his words but it makes his answers come across very weak and calculating. I don't like it either.
Better to watch your tongue and NOT make any mistakes than only make mistakes when you open your mouth like Bush does. Everyone in a position of power stutters, it is a human fact. You cannot not be nervous when you are having a speech which will be analysed by critics and where your every word will be used by politicians against you. Obama never sounds calculating, he sounds smart, educated and very, very, very CONVINCING! Try imagine you're in his shoes and do a better job yourself. Hardly....
I don't the stuttering is why we think George W. Bush is an idiot. It's slightly embarrassing, but it's a non-issue compared to his fantastically poor policy decisions.
I like what Obama said about Stem Cell research in that if the Adult Stem Cells work, then leave the embroyal research alone. The truth is science is very limited in understanding the "living cell" because they reject the "living God" who created life and WHO is Life. Without the SPIRIT there is no life. If science would acknowledge God then the Cure for Cancer and other diseases would be acknowledged and man would drugging and begin healing. Truth can be found at drday com
Obama is calling for a civilian national security force with as much power and funding as the U.S. military. I dont like McCain and I am not a neo con. They are both puppets of a conglomerate of multinationals that own the mainstream news and run the U.S. government.
How pathetic. Obama could not even state when he believes life begins. Perhaps he realizes that his political position is not consistent with the truth. "Above my pay grade" - why is everything about money!?
'Cone of silence'? Oh, I was joking, didn't you know? '$5,000,000'? Oh I was just kidding. A whole lot of 'comedy' for an event that is so important for people who don't know what each person's views are.

A rich guy with no interest to help the majority of this great country :) VOTE FOR OBAMA ... He'll save the next generations from going down the hill , politically, environmentally, and in their education, close the gap between poor and rich... please think thoroughly!!!honestly

The Joker just gave his speech in Fla. It just about could have been a Bush/McCain speech! Laying out "new" directives like Political reconciliation, Taking more fiscal responsibility for costs, and a resposible withdrawal! THAT is NOTHING "new" It always was, and always has been the directive! It is the Bush/Patraeus/Rice/McCain policy and handling that is making THIS the upcoming possibility. To try and "get out in front" of these is a weak Transparent political tactic!
Another way to prevent all these women seeking abortions would be to provide adequate sex education, as Obama has planned. Sorry John, abstinence-only sex ed isn't cutting it.
There should be a separation of faith and politics. Faith has no place in politics. Faith is just that...faith in something that is unknowable. Politics needs to be rooted in reality...not faith.
Obama you were amazing in this forum, no matter if people think you weren't forceful, after all you were in a church and this forum was suppose to be on faith and you. Your answers and responses were just what I wanted to hear. you were amazing.

DO NOT BLOCK THIS COMMENT. I'M EXPRESSING MY OPINION. In my opinion, John McCain sat in his car and listened to Obama's comments with Pastor Rick. How is it that Obama said, "It's not about me." and McCain came out and said, "It's not about you!!" Look at the facts, compare the answers. McCain was way too anxious to answer his questions. He did not even have to wait for the questions. He already knew the answers. He almost even choked, because he couldn't wait for the answer to come out.
People don't be fooled. John McCain heard Obama's answers and it was nasty the way they set Obama up. McCain was way way too anxious to answer his questions. And then when Barack said
"It's not about me!" How was it that McCain came out and said, "it's not about you!!" Look at th facts. Obama was ambushed, but he came out shinning ...
I'm afraid that Obama might not win this election. He did not do well i the "Saddleback Civil Forum". He made a variety mistakes: He did not mention enough the importance of fixing the economy. Also, his body language and delay of response time to questions was BAD-this is a crucial mistake that Obama continues to make-Obama has to pick Hillary Clinton as Vice-President. The Republicans are afraid of this, that is why her name is never mentioned on Fox News as a good running mate for Obama
A clear win for McCain. Precise and direct, he spoke with confidence and wisdom. Obama on the other hand, insisted on pandering. Amid the bumbling comments he repeatedly said he believed one way but would, as president, vote another way. I cannot vote for a man who is not firm in his resolve, and will say whatever he thinks will get him elected. You cannot have it both ways. Will the REAL Barak Obama please stand up......
I'm not even going to bother watching McCains interview here.
Obama's came across as unscripted & sincere.
McCain's from what I've heard is scripted & knows the questions before hand. I wouldn't put it behind anyone that this was deliberately set up to make McCain look smarter, even though that would take A LOT to make someone who finished ahead of only 5 people in his college class to appear as such.
McCain wasn't in a cone of silence, he was in a limo and then in a green room, both of which gave him more than ample access to reports of what exactly the questions were, ie, via cell phone, etc.
He only thinks before he speaks so that he can 1. talk around the point 2.pander to his audience 3. remember the last lie he told so that he can remember which side of the topic he is on that day. McCain was more clear and to the point. Besides, the substance of his answers was much better than Obama's.
mccain was parroting his stump speech. Obama was actually thinking--consistently with a new testament jesus. Obama's answers were far more Christlike than McCain's--yet the evangelicals will probably follow their preachers, rush, and twit hannity and vote for mccain.
Of course it was scripted... he had plenty of time to script his answers in his car while he listened to Obama's interview on the way to the church from his hotel. Welcome to Conegate, folks.
Idiot! you believe everything that the drive-by media tells you, dont you! Do some research, think for yourself. They both had a small list of the questions that were going to asked of them that night. It's all over the news! McCain just performed better..... plain and simple.
How do you know this? You read it in the New York Times or hear it on CNN/MSNBC? Come on! Don't be ignorant!! Don't let the leftwing media decide for you who to vote for.
MSNBC is owned by general electric, the corp that produces most of the engines for U.S. military planes, helicopters, and tanks. Keith Olberman is not "anti-establishment"
I am not an atheist, but I agree with the sentiment expressed. There is suppossed to be a separation of church and state, and to me this thing being hosted by Saddleback "Profit Driven Church" blurs this distinction dangerously. I'm voting for Obama, not Rick Warren and certainly not Pat Robertson!!!
He believes in seperation of Church & State but does not believe in seperation of faith and politics? Umm, I guess with your first statement, we knew where this would go. FAR RIGHT. Cone of silence? How about let's sell a few more books and charge our FOLLOWERS $ 500 - $ 2,000 for attending our fundraiser? Sheep were gathered at that church, that's for sure. Honor, not with this pastor, his followers or their RIGHT WING Man, John McShame. This was supposed to be historical? SHAMEFUL!
I don't wear my faith on my sleeve, nor do I share Obama's faith, but I could appreciate that he draws on his faith for the strength to do what is right for people of all faiths. What I heard in McCain's statements was 'this is my faith and if you don't share it, you aren't an American anyway-- I was a POW!'
McCain was supposed to be in a "cone of silence" so as to not hear the questions Obama was being asked. Turns out he was in his limo checking out the interview on TV.
The megachurch pastor lied to give McCain an advantage.
Great interview. Although Im for McCain, I enjoyed watching this interview. Thanks for posting it in its entirety.

The Republicans are afraid of this, that is why her name is never mentioned on Fox News as a good running mate for Obama

i heard more cheers for Obama than McCain

A clear win for McCain. Precise and direct, he spoke with confidence and wisdom. Obama on the other hand, insisted on pandering. Amid the bumbling comments he repeatedly said he believed one way but would, as president, vote another way. I cannot vote for a man who is not firm in his resolve, and will say whatever he thinks will get him elected. You cannot have it both ways. Will the REAL Barak Obama please stand up......

Obama is AMAZING. He DEFINITELY has my vote.

This was so much better than those phony debates.

I belieeve Obama is the only choice for this election.

also, McCain cracked me up a whole lot, i think both Candidates are nuts, its funny... God bless whoever gets it
Calanonxo7 3 years ago
McCain wasn't in a cone of silence, he was in a limo and then in a green room, both of which gave him more than ample access to reports of what exactly the questions were, ie, via cell phone, etc.
and he still sucked compared to Obama.
OBAMA ALL THE WAY!!

I absolutely believe that something like that happened, but I'd like to see something I can put stock in.

Idk, he stumbled through this quite a bit... scripted or unscripted between the two, still... a lot of stumbling. idk...

The reason I enjoy watching Obama's interviews is because he gives genuine and sincere responses. He actually thinks before he speaks.
DerekTheComic 3 years ago 16
He only thinks before he speaks so that he can 1. talk around the point 2.pander to his audience 3. remember the last lie he told so that he can remember which side of the topic he is on that day. McCain was more clear and to the point. Besides, the substance of his answers was much better than Obama's.
phluidraver 3 years ago
mccain was parroting his stump speech. Obama was actually thinking--consistently with a new testament jesus. Obama's answers were far more Christlike than McCain's--yet the evangelicals will probably follow their preachers, rush, and twit hannity and vote for mccain.

As a secularist atheist I am somewhat disappointed about even having a forum like this... However, I believe that Obama had a good FAIR interview.
Not to demonize McCain, but his interview was certainly scripted.
Caturdayz 3 years ago 15
Of course it was scripted... he had plenty of time to script his answers in his car while he listened to Obama's interview on the way to the church from his hotel. Welcome to Conegate, folks.

Idiot! you believe everything that the drive-by media tells you, dont you! Do some research, think for yourself. They both had a small list of the questions that were going to asked of them that night. It's all over the news! McCain just performed better..... plain and simple.

How do you know this? You read it in the New York Times or hear it on CNN/MSNBC? Come on! Don't be ignorant!! Don't let the leftwing media decide for you who to vote for.
boxeranders 3 years ago
The media is not left wing... It is run and financed by corporations...
outragious007 3 years ago 4
Something like seven to nine out of ten in the media are, self-described, to the left and the media isn't left?

MSNBC is owned by general electric, the corp that produces most of the engines for U.S. military planes, helicopters, and tanks. Keith Olberman is not "anti-establishment"

No, just let Fox News report so YOU can decide right? Right....

SHAMEFUL!

Yes, we need to disagree without demonizing one another. Trying to demonize Barack Obama is all McCain has been doing so far.

I don't wear my faith on my sleeve, nor do I share Obama's faith, but I could appreciate that he draws on his faith for the strength to do what is right for people of all faiths. What I heard in McCain's statements was 'this is my faith and if you don't share it, you aren't an American anyway-- I was a POW!'
seanmg 3 years ago
Very good answers Barack. (I think you came out ahead, even if McCain was not in his "cone of silence" as promised).
You did get out several real differences that people care about.

McCain was supposed to be in a "cone of silence" so as to not hear the questions Obama was being asked. Turns out he was in his limo checking out the interview on TV.
The megachurch pastor lied to give McCain an advantage.
SURPRISE, SURPRISE!

We need more clearheaded, rationale religious leaders like Rick Warren.
irockarlkanijeans 3 years ago
McCain wasn't in a "cone of silence" and there was no coin flip.
McCain was 30-45 min late to the forum, and most likely heard most of the questions.
My question is, did Rick Warren know McCain wasn't even in the building after he announced that McCain was in a "cone of silence"?
And Obama did great in this forum!
