i also have asd.. im 23 female from the philippines. i found it last year when i had my physical examination for my work. doctor said i really need to have surgery, too bad i cant afford it, its too expensive to have that kind of surgery here. i tried to ask help to many foundations but it seems its really not for me. im very happy for those who have successful operations and doing ok now. i hope ill be able to live long for my mom and lil brother for me to help them. pls pray for my miracle.
I had this surgery for ASD (sinus venosus) when I was 9. I am now 25 and have had a child. I am pretty healthy heart-wise other than hypertension and occassional palpitations. Mine was repaired with a patch as well, and I was under the impression that if you don't take care of your body it is possible for the patch to tear. I'm not educated in the new way of closing holes in the heart. I have tried unsuccessfully to watch a full video of this surgery and finally at 25 I have found the nerve! hah
can an ASD happen again ? ....i mean i had my ASD " or my VSD "repaired "not sure which one i had" , is there a possibility that the hole can open again ?
@kawaiiushii after successful repair there is no chance of recurrence but a residual defect may be left at the initial operation but you need to do an echocardiography with color doppler study to confirm it.
@chimpmania1996 the chance of failure after open heart procedure is almost zero but if any residual defect is left , the symptoms may recur however it needs an echocardiographic confirmation.
I had this surgery done when I was 13 for ASD. Only now do I know what is was like from the other side of the table! AHH! But I am 20 now and just fine! = D
I had the patch closure done but via the breast bone, not the open heart procedure. They use a heart port for the former. My hole size(ASD) was 34mm, not suitable for catherization at all. Doctor Naresh Trehan also told me that the former is risky over the years. Dr. Naresh Trehan is one of the best cardio surgeons in the world & the best in India.
My 5 year daughter is having this proceedure done on January 12th 2009, but she is having it done in way of a cathater in the leg, it is truly amazing how these proceedures can be preformed. God Bless you all, And thanks to Sick Kids Toronto
- - - - - - PRE-OPERATION DAY- - - - - - - - - My daughter Dakota's procedure went great, we had to go to the hospital for a pre-operation meeting where we were explained everything about the surgery, I will warn you, they will tell you all the good things, and also all the possible risks of what could happen ( That is the hard thing to hear ) Then they ask if you have any questions, and they will also ask your child the same.
that the main vein wasnt damaged. Afterwards before you leave the hospital you may have to change the bandage, but the nurse in the recovery room will let you know. The incission its self is done at the top of the right leg where the leg and the groin meet, it will not be stitched or stapled, you will just have to change the bandage once a day, and no baths for 5 days after the procedure, you will want to pick up Childrens Tylenol for the leg pain ( Only lasts one day ) and is not too bad
with the Childrens Tylenoyl, Your doctor will also want you to have your Daughter on 1 Childrens Aspiren a day for 6 months to act as a blood thinner to prevent any possible clotting. Your daughter will be put asleep with the mask, unless there is a reason that she cant have it, then they would have to use the IV, Dakota did not vomit at all, when I asked Dakota if she would have it done again, Dakota answered "Yes, it did not hurt or scare me at all " From one parent to another, dont be scared,
- - - - - - Day Of Procedure - - - - - - - - - We had to be at the hospital 1 hr prior to the procedure, Dakota was in the operating room for 1 1/2 hrs and we could go into the recovery room 15mins later, we walked into the recovery room and to our surprise Dakota was awake, abit droggy and watching Dora the explorer, after the procedure expect to be in the recovery room for 4 - 6 hrs, then you may be required to have an ultrasound before you leave just to check
Thank you so much for the information! I really appreciate it...So your daughter didnt have to stay overnight? Cause I think her Dr. said she would have to stay one night...maybe just being overly precautious?
No, Dakota did not have to stay the night, the following day we went back for a EchoCardiogram to ensure that the device seated proper, by the way the incission is no bigger than a cat scratch, and the night of the procedure your daughter will not be allowed to walk, she will want to but the next morning she will be great to walk. Best of luck, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.. God Bless. Keep us informed please. :)
Thank you, I will! Avery has pulmonic stenosis as well, and congestive heart failure...her and I have been through a lot, but it's so encouraging to see success stories! :)
hi..im having the same procedure done after i did my trans esophegeal echo my doc said the hole was large and he wants to have the specialist look at it and see if the hole can still be closed through the catheter.. how big was the hole with your daughters? im really scared now...but doc is amazed that i lived with it all my life wihtout any symptoms or trouble im 25 now ..thnks
My 14 month old daughter had the same type of ASD patch surgery performed 9/16/08, except she was put on a lung/heart machine and the heart cooled down and all the blood re-routed through the machine. I could not watch the preocedure before her surgery. Now I can handle it. Amazing what these surgeons can do.
My sister has to have this done.
