  • It is such a shame that Kenneth was not at ease with his sexuality in real life, and yet was quite 'at home' with such charactures as 'Sandy' (from Julian & Sandy) and other rather 'camp' or effete Charactures that he 'played' from time to time and the Audience and Fans loved him for.

I would have loved to have met him, but his intellect was way above mine, so we would probably have had nothing in common.

A Well Read & Educated Man and good all round Actor of Stage, Film & Television. RIP

  • Glad I came trollin round here! I still can never get enough of Jules & Sand

  • So bona to varda!!

  • I remember it well..

  • Can't believe somebody commenting below is saying this documentary is wrong to suggest Kenny was homosexual and that the evidence of this lies in the diaries! You've got to be joking, the diaries show us that Williams thought men were "dishes" and "catches" etc and indulged when he was younger. He could never relax with a man but certainly wasn't straight. Look at Joe Orton's diaries.

  • God bless Julian & Sandy. Total Bona.

  • Ill informed naration....

  • The narrator suggests - states really- that Williams was homosexual. This is not the case. His diaries, and the recollection of his few personal friends are clear on that. He was however a very private and self-conscious individual.

  • @royalcourtier Kenneth Williams was certainly gay. Just read about his holidays with Joe Orton in Tangier and the conversations between them. He virtually joked about it himself, without actually being 'out'.

  • @ArtyOne why discuss? its his business and he was a private man, his characters are up for discussion, but why speculate on something he never chose to reveal?

  • @eleanorluery quite right. im sure he wouldnt of appreciated it. honour his memory - dont speculate.

  • An enormous number of homosexuals were in theatre at the time, so of course adopted the circus slang of 19th or even 18th century times. You know what I find sad about this? In the 60s when I was a kid, we adopted this stuff and camp was trendy without any thought of being gay - in fact entertainment was full of it, from the cartoon style Batman to 'Virgin of the Secret Service' (Queen Victoria's) - shocking older people's sexual stereotyping, today is more restrictive, more 'one or else other'

  • I wonder whether he realised how much people loved him. He was brilliant.

Round the Horne! Memories of my youth. Fantastic comedy.

  • Laughed all the way through, dear! Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. Which tv show is this clip taken from?

  • Perhaps it should be made clear to those who are not aware - the people you see performing in this clip are not the originals from the classic Round the Horne radio series. They are actors in a stage production, acting the parts of Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Horne.

  • Love RTH and Julian & Sandy, absolute class.

This commentary, however, is bilge. Idiot words for an idiot generation.

Polari wasn't just gay slang, it was widely used in the theatrical profession - it probably developed in the days of wandering players.

J&S were 'resting' actors which is why they used Polari, they were obviously camp and 'possibly' gay (which was obviously the joke) but the reason they used polari was their profession.

Barry Took (writer) is on record on this point.

  • I don't think anyone suggested it was a language developed by homosexuals, and certainly, given the variety of languages from which it is derived, wandering players is a good bet for it's origins.

Having said that, homosexuals undoubtedy adopted it not because they were actors, but because homosexuality being illegal at the time gave them a means of recognition and coded communication.

Polari was in common usage in the Merchant Navy nothing to do with being actors or seamen, just gay.

  • Fantabulosa!

  • Julian and Sandy were characters from 'Round the Horn'
