Its never truly explained, but from what we know gordon is some kind of contract soldier or agent who gman controls. And Shepard appears to be in a similar situation though he is kept in stasis whereas Gordon is hierd for the events of Half Life 2, in all this time only two other characters have shown to know of gman Breen and Eli Vance.

Gordon and Eli are the only two characters who seem to know of the Gman and know of his power and influence. There are many characters who are seen interacting with him, but those two are probably the only ones who know who he truly is.

maybe Gman isnt even related to gordon freeman,

he doesnt only talk to gordon, he also talks to barney, and in some sightings he talks to rebels, and sometimes he talks to scientists, maybe the Gman is from a place, that isnt (yet) introduced to the half life games.

(this is a theory i just found: Gman is the son of alyx and gordon, and he wants to prevent something from happening, maybe thats why gordon and Gman look like each other, or valve was low on budget and gave them the same models)

actually shepard will come back, and heres some good proof. in portal, the apecture science key boards have some certain keys highlighted orange. and when u find those keys on a normal computer its an acrownim for Adrien Shepard. and there is going to be Half life 2 episode 3 and Half life 3. he may make a comback

I think you're right. I'd love to see Shepard come back. He's in stasis just like Gorden was after HL1, right? He'd be a very cool twist in the series. Maybe the whole Half-Life 3 will be Shephard's experiences. I'd like to see him come back.

If you follow the helicopter, you can see that it explodes, because Xen Mantay Rays attacked it. If you were on the helicopter, you would die because everyone on the heli died..

I played through the Steam version recently, and he's still there in the pit-worm's nest. Immediately after you first enter the area from the ducts (where the area title plays) he's way up above you in an observation room. If you're facing away from the entrance duct toward the end of the room, he'd be up on the right side.
