I work LP, 10 yrs and counting. Some things could have happened here. 1st: have more than one lp outside, call other lp from near stores for back up. Once the suspect steps one foot outside, he would be approached by at least people. I love LP and would not give it up, use common sense, and deter if you have too. That's largely just a stereotype, because businesses usually look upon over-aggressive guards as a potential liability. This job is actually 99% about deterring and preventing crime, and only 1% about arresting suspects after a crime's already occurred. With public police officers, the opposite is true.

When I used to do LP at JCPenney about 12 years ago, it was all about arresting shoplifters. 100% prosecution policy. They pretty much let us do anything to effect the arrest also. There wasn't much deterrent there. They had ink tags, but none of those alarms at the doors. We didn't try to scare people into dropping stolen merchandise before they left. They did have a pretty advanced CCTV and POS system. As far as the job, I wouldn't want to do it now.

I once had a guard who was a cop moonlighting at my job site tell me similar stories about chasing shoplifters all the way across the parking lot and the highway, if need be. I have to wonder, though, if somebody got hurt and the company got sued would they stick up for you? Hell no. They would have just thrown you to the wolves to cover their own asses and avoid as much liability as possible :-/

out of high school prior to enlistment in service I received 7.50. In 99 when I got out I went back to that job while in college. Then I got 9.50. The most I made my sr. year of undergrad studies was 14.00 an hour. It is not worth the hassle. The pay sucks, the shoplifters are crazy, and they don't cover medical all that well. They tried to charge me after I got stabbed for my medical visit. I even had to drive myself to the hospital!!!
