yes there are, but cfls take a minute to comne up to full brightness. frequent on off cycles ruin the bulb. that is why i didnt use a cfl. i only need the light for a few minutes at a time. if i needed it for long durations i would definately have cfls in there.

Maybe you could get a lower profile and even more light with a fluorescent light.

i have thought about it. a 12 volt ballast is pretty expensive compared to this.
