That was really interesting.I am just about to start a Pathfinder game and I like the way the Game is like the old AD&D in feel.I played 4th Ed D&D and it just did not do it for me.
lucduchien - You'll want to be sure to check out the "Pathfinder RPG Beginner's Box". Pathfinder is the successor to D&D and the Beginner's Box is precisely what you are looking for ... a way to learn the game and introduce it to your friends.
As for local players, there are lots of resources on the web for connecting with other players. Google "looking for game".
@neoncon thanks. when I was in high school, I moved away as my friends were getting into d&d. i came to visit, and they got me all excited to play. We built a character, started playing, but it fell apart before we got out of the first tavern. then, the next time i saw them, like a year later, they wanted to play this futuristic vampire rpg that they had started the week before. we never got around to playing, and the whole thing remained a mystery to me. i'll look into this.
I've been very interested in rpgs for a long time, i mean like 15 years. i once tried to buy a bunch of d&d books and try to figure it out with a couple of friends, but it's just so complicated to get off the ground. i just can't seem to break through. my complaint is that these gaming companies sell to their seasoned gamer base, but leave no room for a beginner to get started. anyone know some resources to get going? where i live i don't know anyone personally who really plays.
@lucduchien Im in a similar situation, but it seems like with the most recent D&D they have tried to engage with new players. This has led to lots of complaints from fans of older versions of D&D that the game has been 'dumbed down' and made too much of a hack and slash game, which seems like why games like Pathfinder have started up.
I love that they sell PDF's. II use them for quick searches during the game, but I love the feel of having a book in my hand as I am browsing for the next game.
I honestly think that the best way to sell more than Wizards of the Coast is to find concepts and liscences more original than DnD.
PHB sells every week, because players don't want to buy a Monster Manual. So just spliting the concent, even if for the DM its not the best, is a good idea. Pathfinder is smart, because they choosed to split the content into two books (up to now) : Core and Bestiary.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is a good example of a next generation RPG. Check it

If you have a virtual table top with computer-generated characters running around... then doesn't that just make it a computer game?
