A very interesting clip, on making Pocket Transistor Radios back in the 50's. Texas played an important part - and still does.Everyone has heard of Texas Instruments. They make chips too, no salt or vinegar though.
Made in USA, the transistors from Texas Instruments I suppose. I wonder if all the test technicians were Radio Amateurs- HAMs. Sure would like a US solid state radio like that in my collection , I just have a few imports. Here is an interesting fact : Milton Bradley made a bunch of handheld electronic games in the US in the late 70's , Merlin, Microvision, etc. then the same thing happened.
We lost our jobs because our government is allowing this to happen. Our government is controlled b a small elite whose motivation is to fatten themselves and control the country where ever then can make money. I think we should have changes in our Government leaders. Iran, Tunisia and Egypt can do it...why can't we?
We should not have allowed corporations to exploit cheap labour, this resulted in them moving manufacturing to India and China. Our governments should instead have legislated for FAIR PAY and campaigned internationally for this so there would not be an extreme pay gap between countries. In the end these entrepreneurs, billionaires and rich corporations have caused the financial crisis that is killing our society, with our money.
Simple solution! Tell the fucking ignorant corporations, sure!, you can sell your Chinese made goods here, with a 50% tariff....... Oh, I forgot, the corporations tell the government what to do!
if i have to make transistor radio...could you just please tell me where i have to put tank coil (emitter, base or collector) and where i have to put feedback coil??? is the areal wire you have shown with 4 turns, the same called feedback coil??? what is the function of feedback coil and where it is plased in transistor please help me...dont discuss amplifier, i want to know about the first circuit, amplification comes next stage...please help.
Regency was located at 7700 Records Street in Indianapolis. They also made VHF-UHF radio scanners as well until 1980 or so. I have several of them. Electra was located in Cumberland just east of Indy. Now everything is stamped out in a sweat shop in China and is disposable. What a shame.
Nothing like a 180 watt "Big Bertha" for soldering on a radio! Notice the absence of anti-static wrist straps and ubiquitous safety glasses! I was 6 then and couldn't afford a TR-1; but I saved up $27 for a Truetone and was happy as a bug in manure! Mexican broadcasts came into my bed at night and turned me into a radio geek! (N5BXL) What a wonderful time and place to be growing up in.
I have 4 of these in various colors. My Father work for Regency Electronics for 30+ years. I used to go to Regency with him on Saturdays and I am sure that I walked the same floors that is in this video. He started there in the 60's. THANKS for sharing.
sorry to end ur guys doom and gloom attitude about US manufacturing, but the US is still the largest exporter of goods in the world, the thing thats changed the most is the appearance of our manufacturing base. now instead of having these hulking blast furnaces and integrated mills,( even though i live just a few miles away from Gary Works and many other large mills in the chicagoland area) they have been replaced by small agile mini mills and assembly lines manned robots
@crusher19860138 --I hear you, I live in the US, and im 50 so I remember what a manufacturing giant both US and the UK used to be, its literally a crime what the greedy political puppets and big money that run them have done to our countrys.
I have accepted that it will likely never be the same, and im glad I got to grow up in an America that was closer to what it was intended to be. I am laid off and no prospects so its all very depressing. they have outsourced our very Heritage.
America has lost its manufacturing greatness, we don't make things or things people want. Sure iPods and so on, but where are they made?
The last part about commerce and how money flows back to the consumers own pocket book is SO PROFOUND! Where is China's wealth coming from? They made s#%t and lots of it.......their quality is good and getting better. Cars? Japan beat our butts in the 80's and 90's and we are paying for it now....Booo
Well the good old days....
May not return...

We (as consumers) were also at fault - remember we demanded lower prices and we got them, only if we moved our production off shore.

That's the Regency factory in Lawrence--just a hop, skip and a jump from where I live. They're assembling TR-1's, the first transistor radio made.
