Later he moved further eastward where he established another settlement which he called "La Isabela" after Queen Isabela of Spain. After his returned from Spain then he was ordered to conquer the new land he then named "HISPANOLA which means little Spain. The first Spanish settlement was in Haiti not DR

By the late 1500's both English and French forces had been raiding on the Spanish forces in Hispanola. By the 1697 under the treaty of Ryswick 1rd was given to the French which they called Saint Domingue and the remaining 3rd stayed Spanish which they called Santo Domingo.
