My name is Ashleigh- My uncle Don was the drummer in this band :D I love his bands music and am always proud to see The Frantics shown at the EMP in Seattle :)
i can clear this up since i played bass in the frantics. the original release had on the flip side a rocker called "checkerboard". when the payola scandal hit right as this record reached #53 with a bullet in its second week on the charts, the wolf howls were eliminated and "no werewolf" was on the b side of the re-release. the poem at the beginning is the voice of bob reisdorff, the wolf howls are kearney barton, and the scream at the end is bonnie guitar. and there you have the truth.
if you flip the original pressing of "werewolf" over you'll find "no werewolf" on the flip side. i have great memories of this record, in the summer of 1960, that cute little teenage girl would slide close to me in my 55 chevy when this would come on the radio. she was to be my loving wife for almost 50 years. in the early 80s i talked to nokie edwards about this record, i always thought it was the ventures, he said the frantics were a group who sounded like the ventures.
@overbrookXXX It's all good man. I like both versions, but I am a little biased towards The Ventures because of the face I grew up with them and Mel Taylor is one of my all-time favorite drummers. The Frantic's version of this song rocks for sure though : )
@overbrookXXX I never said it was the same recording. You should read before jumping to conclusions. Record labels that Instrumental bands were signed to in the 1960s did this kind of thing all the time. One song may be called "Werewolf" then another band records the same song and renames it "The Fourth Dimension" or vise versa to try and give their band some kind of an advantage. There are tons of songs that are the exact same that were later re-named, or re-named for a different country.
@overbrookXXX The only thing different is The Frantics added werewolf howls, where The Ventures didn't. It's the same song. I know what I am talking about.
what happened to no werewolf? can someone who has it please repost it , Its a good jam too, and its been gone 3 days now , . . . I play these songs in my garage all day long in greater Roswell New Mexico Im russell the wizzard on myspace
@prodigyofpeace1983 Actually The Ventures stole this song from this rather unknown band, and just simply called it The Fourth Dimension. The Frantics version was first.
A hauntingly good tune, with scenes from 1941's 'The Wolf Man' mixed into it! If you have the 'Sounds of the Season' channel on your TV system, you can hear this on it every October along with other great Halloween songs!
The person doing the howl at the end is country singer Bonnie Guitar. My brother, Don Fulton-drums, told me the reason Werewolf was re-released without the growls and howls had something to do with the payola scandal but in the book Sonic Boom by Peter Blecha a different reason was given. The record was climbing the Billboard top 100 chart at #60 when it was pulled and re-released without the special effects. It died and never appeared on the chart again.
The (four) frantics were a mid 50s to mid 60s instrumental group from Seattle. Their music was, jazz, rhythm n blues and rock n roll influenced but with a "teen-pop" feeling. Their first 45' single was "Straight Flash / Young blues" in 1959. They also played as a back up group for Bobby Darin.
you can find more of their work in the "complete frantics on dolton" compilation.
Well, Bobby Darin is Bobby "jebeni" Darin mate and and at least he can have my appreciation for composing songs like "dream lover" and "18 yellow roses".
This is the original Frantics. The new group that calls themselves the Frantics should have gotten their OWN name. Or a copyright should have prevented that. Adds confusion.
the man that voiced the sounds of the werewolf (not the poem at the beginning) is Kearney Barton and he died a couple days ago. R.I.P.Kearney

Did anyone else notice at the start that the thing the guy said? Din't Florence Welch copy that into her song 'Howl'?

Fantastic memorabilia. We loved this original as young kids in Sydney. Only one DJ was known to play it though. It didn't chart.

I've been wondering about this for years: Is the spoken intro on 0:07-0:16 the voice of Vincent Price? It sounds very much like him! Anyone?

no, it's the producer/ record label guy's voice.
