Yeah, 4 years later and what is she doing? Maybe she just can't get it together. I can't understand why somebody who was the talk of 2007 didn't go anywhere with it. Which is a pity because I really like her and would like to see more of her stuff.
I bet the white males are all over her. That would include her road manager, stage manager, the band members, the set director back-stage etc. Poor girl.
Like Gladys Knight says in her live concert cd...."I wish we could go back when music was simple." I'm 27(Aug 10, God willing). Young-ish, but I know what music IS and is supposed to be. My brothers are considerably older than me and brought me up on Marvin, Al, Donny, Aretha, Sam, Otis, Jackie...Music is not supposed to be marketed; packaged with a neat lil' bow. You either like it or you don't. Alice Smith is THE TRUTH!!!!
BTW...She's also VERY sexy with the laid back chill attitude.
WTHeck? She sounds like a Black gal, plain and simple. She is a very good singer who doesn't limit herself to R&B and rap. There are plenty of us Black gals who like music, not just one genre. BTW, I hear a lot of White girls who sound the same, like some degree of Michelle Branch. I wish they'd add a little soul to their music the way Alice Smith does. She sings like she is fellin' it, not just giving a performance. Keep it up girl!
missesfreedom and welldamn24: how can someone sound black or white??? how ignorant for both of you. she just sounds like alice smith no one else. she sounds like a girl from brooklyn jeez.
Holywoodowl, with all due respect, I understand its unPC to state that someone sounds Black or White, but when it refers to music, that's the case. I'm not saying that she sound stereotypical, but when it comes to music many times, but not always, you can infer based on singing style & choice about their influences & culture. Joss Stone sounds like a white girl singing soul. Alice Smith sounds like a black girl who's crossing genres.
Let's agree to disagree and just love Alice's music, 'kay?
True. True. I just wanted to point out that Black folks are the basis of all American music: country, rock, r&b, hip hop, ROCK (especially), funk, jazz, blues (which is pretty much the basis for everything else). Its just that American "History," working hand-in-hand with mass media, distorts and confuses everybody about where things come from... Alice Smith IS black music but she sounds a lot like ALICE SMITH, a very original sound reminiscent of Chrisette sometimes.
But Classical music isn't American... Classical Music is of the European tradition (some people we chased out of here a couple centuries ago, right???). The majority of what you hear now can be traced back to its Black roots. Even the 20th century composers like Shostakovich, Debussy, Ravel, they came to the U.S. to study the Black jazz musicians and incorporate what they learned into their own compositions.
One can say that the jazz, rock, country and blues instrumentation is classical based. But, then we'd have to look at the basis of CLASSICAL instrumentation to find their roots in East Asia or wherever (for example, they arrived in Europe because the empires were trading). Of course you can say that the music theory is classical based... dominant leads to the tonic (or whatever). But, then u should note that those theorists' concepts are rooted in science and mathematics, universal languages.
... for instance, the pentatonic scale can be found in MANY cultures on all corners of the globe (look for Leonard Bernstein's Harvard lectures discussing the matter). The concept of "White Supremacy" bares the notion that White people are the origins of everything... that psychology becomes the notion that blowing up an entire nation is actually "liberating" it... it all relates. But, bottom line, Robert Johnson ain't got shit to do with Mozart. Don't believe me? Ask John Mayer or Eric Clapton.
@TheNiallCasey better yet... ask Alice Smith. this is Black Music right here... in full effect. Look for her influences and the influences of her influences. Okay, school's out. My apologies for the long rant.
@WellDamn24 Well said! I love it when people are more than they're expected to be. I came across this video by accident, and I'm glad I did! I love this sista. Another one who's different is Res. A lof of folks need to broaden their horizons. Free your mind, your ass will follow!
BIIG Alice Smith Advocate! I have turned every one of my friends onto her.I love the fact that she doesnt come off too impressed with herself because honestly, her music and artistry speaks for itself and her public demeanor provides balance. But for the record, everytime I've seen/met her, she's always been pleasant and gracious (even totally girled out on her) Wish I had been working for reelblack back then. I would have loved to do the actual interview. But of course u know I love it Mike! :)
She is the truth, no lie. Everybody hypes some fav artist but she is powerful.
I went to a Black Lily show here in Philly and saw this woman soundcheck with her band, facing them. She had the stage crew all of us stunned and we all applauded, I never saw that at a soundcheck, remember. Then she tore up the show 2 hours later, had folks rocking. Even better than Jill Scott who was great.
"Alice Smith is Amazing! She is the Present! She is the Future! Only Jehova God is the Truth, but, when it comes to music, she is the closest thing there is."

Have you guys heard of Elle Varner? She reminds me a lot of Alice Smith. Women that can actually sing... Elle did an amazing job at the BET Awards.
