This, was the last song Papi sang - witnessed by close friends. 3 days ago, I first heard the song, & loved it; but it was too late. Papi had left us...I miss you so, Papi!
I used to go to the movies on saturdays to watch gene autry he was great. I used to go get pop corn when ever he would sing a song. I just liked him better as a cowboy.
If you haven't seen/heard Anacani's version of this song....you've missed something wonderful. Anacani Maria Consuelo y Castillo Lopez Cantor Montoya.
JohnnyDR - that sounds a lot like people were saying about the kids of the 60's (hey, wait a minute, that's me) but it passes. Each generation wants to be different. Hang in there because there is a lot of gold on this web site and more always coming. If we could live a whole lot longer, guys like Gene would still be around, but we all gotta go sometime.
I agree...there are many artists that thrive on music like this..."wait a minute, that's me." ;-) I am a 24 year old rythym guitarist that would not touch new country... but the old stuff and they guys like wayne hancock and dale watson are the best!!!
Terryjohndean; Ready my name is Terry and I live in Tamworth,NSW,Australia. You are right the time of the beautiful ballards like this are dwindling, but there are still soem of us that enjoy singing, these wonderful soul filling songs. The world could do with some up and coming Ballard singers, and if the young ones out there just try it, they will be the richer for the experience. T J Dean Tamworth.
What a shame we don't have beautiful ballads like this anymore. Even if we did who would sing them? There are no more Gene Autrys or Roy Rogers. Life Sucks!
Ready, I'd really like to look at the world with rose colored glasses like you but I'm a realist. I see orange, blue, green haired kids with their pants two sizes larger than they should be, faces pierced from eyes to gentials, unclean bodies, foul dirty mouths. Percieving talent in kids today is hard to do when it looks like you're seeing a moran in the making. They have little care of the future and take from anyone, anything they want because only "NOW" has meaning.
..this is wonderful....just imagine Patsy Cline singing this...sadly she never recorded this song !

This song would be great for a new Fallout game, like in New Mexico or West Texas or before the Great War.

Pity about the orchestra and chorus but Gene does a great job.
Les Paul and Mary Ford still streets ahead of any other version.
Keep it Country!
