Thunder Force 2 on the Sharp X68000 is a really good version of this game as it's graphically better but I find myself playing it on the Sharp and on the Genesis equally. The same thing with Sol-Feace for the X68000 and the Sega CD. The graphics on that game is superior on the Sharp but the Sega CD version has better music and sound effects in my opinion.
@Soulmindseeker It's not the difficulty. It's just that you can move in any direction. So how am I supposed to know where to go? Any direction loops endlessly, it's horrible...If the goal is to kill a certain amount of enemies, or something, it doesn't tell me. I could play it for years and never get anywhere.
@MrSaturn33 - that´s rigth , very confusing , Imagine the first version , that was release only in arcades , I guess that isn´t possible finish that version .
@MrSaturn33 Just look at my full run of the game. I had it as a kid. I think the manual showed you what you are actually supposed to do on the top level screens. But if you don't have it you have to fund bases and destroy them. There is 4 on every top level except for the last stage.
Pretty sure its german, mixed with a couple of english words here and there. Techno Soft is a japanese company though, so its seems abit weird that they choose german as speech in the game. but maybe they had some developers from germany in their company.
@kapteinsnute or they wanted to make a game that not muchto do with the janapese...they invented mario after all and mario is italian. many games are made in one area, but feature many things, including language from other areas
Something else I'd like to mention - since this too was among the first Genesis games I got, it holds many dear memories for me. As such, here's what I heard as a kid for each weapon. Five Wave - Five Way Destroy - Des Court Wide Shot - Wide & South Hunter - Hunter Clash - Clash Laser - Laser Wave Shot - Wave & Tech Side Blaster - Side a Blaster Nova - Nova Mega Flash - Mega Slash Claw - Low Roll - LOW!!! Breaker System On! - This won't last long!
Thunder Force II is my favorite Thunder Force game. The top down missions are what separates it from the many shumps that are mostly forgettable, including sadly other Thunder Force games.
As a side note, I do believe the shield is "Breaker System On". According to the original manual, the shield is named a "Breaker".
aaaahhh hahahahaha.....that's funny cuz i couldn't recognize half of what that lady says when you got half the powerups on this game.....but i'm completely sure she says "Blink-all systems on...." she's got a japanese accent, which really throws you for a loop.....dayamn....i can't believe there's someone who is reviewing all the games i used to play in my childhood.
I found TF2's side-scroll stages to be much more 3D than TF3 because of the parallax that moves in all directions, instead of just left/right, even if the they aren't drawn as well. The effect was more impressive. I wish the had kept this, but they had to throw it away to allow multiple layers of parallax within the background layer.
I always thought it said "Breaker System On", but I could totally be wrong.
TF2 is one of the best shooters ever made -- and I'm talking about the side scrolling levels. The later versions in the series couldn't match what TF2 had with its parallax screens, which moved up and down, unlike the original.
If you haven't already, check out the Sharp X68000 version of Thunder Force II, it's much better than the Megadrive-Genesis version.
For those who don't know, X68000 was an extremely high-end 16-bit computer in Japan, kind of the Japanese equivalent of Amiga, but even more powerful.
Thunder Force II was first created for the X68000 in 1988, and only then ported, in downgraded form, to the MD/Genesis in 1989.
i remember the unplugging the cartridge trick, while the genesis is on, and plugging it back in, to enable an even harder difficutly mode, one we always played in. i have never seen this documented on the internet. a very rare trick. the game was incredible in this mode.
I thought the intro said "IF YOU THINK YOU NEED IT, LOT OF GOOD LUCK" This was my first genesis game back in88-89 when the genesis first dropped. the soundtrack is still sick. . . sounds like some old school Brad Fiedel Terminator type shit!
89 i think. the soundtrack kicked ass. i even have mp3s of it recorded directly from the genesis. it was the first game i blasted through a stereo system for full effect!!
I just downloaded the sharp x68000 version of this game. Its twice as hard as the genesis version, & thats on the easy level. Its also packed full of stages Ive never seen before
Ever heard of Roms and Emulators? google it, you can play almost any game on the PC (the majority of them were on cartridges - aka NES, SEGA, N64, SNES, and so on)
Good question, they are probably out of print by now. You could try to find them on Ebay or on a torrent. The albums are called "Technosoft Game Music Collection" and has up to 15 Volumes I believe.
I bought TF II (game, manual and box) from Ebay for six bucks including shipping. It's not hard to find, it came out the first year the Genesis was available (1989)
Sounds like it is saying "weapons system on". I got this game plus tommy lasorda baseball and super hang on when I bought my genesis. Seeing this brought back a lot of memories.
Wikipedia: Thunder Force (1) is a scrolling shooter computer game released by Technosoft in 1983. It is the first game in the Thunder Force series. It was initially released for the Sharp X1 computer, and later appeared on the Sharp MZ-1500, NEC PC-6001 mkII, and in 1985 on the NEC PC-8801 mkII. In 1984, it was released for the FM-7, and NEC PC-9801 computers as Thunder Force Construction, featuring an add-on that allowed players to create custom made areas.
I know most of what he's saying, but if someone can fill in the blank, I'd appreciate it. So anyways, this is what the guy says at the start(from what I understand):

Tomomi Ootani composed the music and Toshiharu Yamanishi did the SFX.
In 2001, TecnoSoft closed their doors for good. That makes me sad. If they were still around today, they should develop the Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Toon Disney, Disney Channel, Kids WB, YTV, and Teletoon cartoon videogames. Trust me. If TecnoSoft makes cartoon videogames, I know that they will take time in the game's development, instead of rushing to get the game finished like the half-assed American game developers.
Was the same for me... I was used to nintedo at the time but when I saw this I was hooked... As far as what she is saying I could never figure it out. But just remember she is probably Janpanese and has an accent...
(as the limitations on the Gen made it worse..lol)
I hear "Break Offense On". IMOP, this game trumps the other TF. Gamplay & sound quality wise. (cut sound quality on TF3 & up to have more room for gfx) Tries@ more realistic gfx = usually awful (Clouds in TF4 made me vomit) Gen's colors 2limited4it. U also left out some of the most Wicked levels on TF2 review... which makes me wonder if u actually beat it? all: press a+b+c+start for options meun (skip levels) Took me 1yr off/on play 2 beat it. An interlacing issue when the footage went from tape to the computer screen. Its been fixed in newer reviews. For NIGHT DRIVER we had to lay the video over itself in 2 layers or else the car vanished.
I wonder if you'll do a review over Eternal Champions? That was my first game to own for Sega Genesis, and the first cart I bought for it was Sega 6-Pack, included the games, Sonic 1; Super Hangon; Columns; Revenge of Shinobi; Streets of Rage; and Golden Axe. Thunder Force II on X68000 has over the Sega console version:
*significantly better graphics: more colors, additional layers of parallax scrolling
*clearer audio
*two levels not found in the Sega version
*weapons not in the Sega version
*higher difficulty
*a map for the overhead / top-view levels when you pause the game
