Thing to remember is the in pre and Victorian England the idea of "children" in a modern sense didn't exist. Children were seen as small adults hence the seeming barbarity of some people towards them ie. working in mines, mills, sweeping chimneys etc. Also, because there was no welfare state everybody had to either work or starve and you can bet that there would have been queues of people trying to get hired to work in mines and mills. It is always wrong to impose our modern standard on history.
It was Victorian children who built much of our nation. Millions of Chinese ppl were deliberately hooked onto opium, before the opiate wars, which brought massive profits to the Royal Family. Slaves in the West Indies (Carribean) cut down sugar cane for the ruling classes of England. Tea was produced in India under the British Indian Tea Company in factories worked by Indian children. Victorian England had a lot of very rich & educated bloodlines & very poor ppl at the other end of the scales.
Ppl go on about slavery in other nations, but they forget all the English children of poor families forced to work long hours in dangerous conditions, sweeping chimneys, entering coal mines and dangerous areas adult hands couldn't reach, many were malnourished & received very little pay. Charles Kingsleys novel "The Water Babies" is a sad tale of a little English boy who was a chimney sweep who escapes in a fantasy world with little babies in the water, he was appalled by the cruelty of it.
I see you're getting the same socialist nonsense in school the rest of us have been getting. The idea that child labor was something introduced by those wicked, factory-owning capitalists. What does everyone suppose the kiddies were doing before the Industrial Revolution? Going to school? And then after school, lounging around sunning themselves by the pool, right? (Hint: take a look at the image at 2:25. That was their existence before the industrial revolution.)
Since when did two wrongs make a right? How far ahead would civilization be if children of that time had been educated and their parents had been paid a livable wage?
Child labour IS cheap labour-how many adults would the factory owner have had to employ if labour laws had been in effect at the time? There's absolutely NO excuse for exploited labour anywhere on earth & but for corrupt politicians in India,China, Bangladesh,Mexico etc it could be eradicated. It's pure logic plain and simple.
I guess I should have added that my granddad worked in a coal mine in Illinois, USA. Doesn't matter, they used children without regard for their health. Those mines are closed today, but still under those towns.
My grandfather started working in the coal mines at 12 years old. They thought it was normal. His grandmother even gave the boys cigarettes at a young age...my granddad died after a long struggle with "black lung". It makes me sick!
OH MY! does this mean that WHITE children suffered child labour? Can it be true? To hear then tell it today, ONLY THIRD WORLD children have suffered this, at the hands of WHITE IMPERIALIST DEVILS. But this would mean that not ONLY blacks have been enslaved! Oh, what a calamity. To learn that whites enslaved whites and that not ONLY blacks have been slaves in this world...OH, let us WAIL, beat our chests in ignorance, and WHINE.
@skeetereze there are many THIRD WORLD children who suffer this but most of the ppl in charge of it are not white but one of their own now that is ignorance to say its only only white ppl
@halyie It is horrific and SAD no matter where it was, who it was, or where it is today. SO sad. Children should be protected and cherished. It breaks my heart to see these photos of little children in England (even if in years past) being used like that, and it breaks my heart to see photos of children being used in any country like that today. They're babies, it's just too sad.
I hear you Edwards21416 to true im not racist but its about time we had our country and our identity back or we British going to be the minority race in our own country!
This shows us that there are advantages and disadvantages to the Industrial Revolution. Although the Industrial Revolution is supposed to improve productivity at work as well as transportation, the negatives factors that occurred, however, are things such as child labour & that the working conditions were terrible (ie OH & S) in comparison to today's standards. Child labour happened because kids have to support their families & the govt provision of public education is 1 good way to end this.
it's ok because now we have no country for ourselves we are giving it away so t doesn't matter that this country was built on the backs of British working class ,there are over one hundred and fifty million in Pakistan and they will glady come here and out number us all ,no boarders = no identy no country no self determination etc etc etc
this is a shame on our country, can't believe how awful it was i knew about workhouses and that they were very bad but didn't know the facts it's just such a shit life they had, and i can't imagine sending my nephews towork a mimimum of 48 hours a week at 9 and 11 its barbaric
@123lincs The workhouses weren't bad places. People would put themselves in them for the winter and get food and shelter then come out again in the spring. They weren't the hell holes that everyone thinks. It was seen as a social stigma to admit tat you were that poor to have to go to 'the parish'. It was like being tto proud to accept the dole. Now it's looked on as a birthright.
but fact is, as the gouverment of england made laws to forbid child labor, non else than the parents were demonstrating against the law, cause the los of money what their children brought home. humanity is a sickness
Unfortunately it still happens to millions of children today, child labour never ended in full - just in select countries. When you think about it though, considering how much is still made by children that makes it's way to us we are all supporting child labour.
Yeah, it is really sad thing :( children are our future and we must take care of them, protect them and give them chance to succeed in their life... Life of those children who lived in the period of the Industrial Revolution was horrible :(
I don't believe what this video is suggesting, I think its a bunch of lies, but I dont know that for sure
